'While many of us appreciate and enjoy George Lucas’ creative evolution of the classic Star Wars films via the various releases of the ever-changing ‘Special Editions’, we respectfully state that there is tremendous importance in the original theatrical prints of the Star Wars Trilogy.
Above and beyond the nostalgic value that they hold for millions of fans the world over, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are landmark films that represent watershed moments in motion picture history. To preserve the original, award-winning work of the many artisans, sound technicians, craftsmen, and special effects artists is to do justice to their priceless contributions.
Undeniably, these movies are also cultural placeholders for millions of film fans. The impact that the original Star Wars Trilogy made on countless numbers of children, young people, and grownups everywhere is indisputable. Preserving the unaltered theatrical release forms of these movies and making them available to the public is of utmost importance.
An entire generation grew up with these movies and still love them dearly. We have created treasured memories and will always hold a place in our lives. We have bought the cinema tickets, video tapes, Laserdiscs, VCDs, DVDs, Blu Rays, artwork, posters, comics, books, soundtracks, games, figures, toys, lunchboxes, the various Special Editions, spin-offs, the Prequels, the Sequels, Standalone movies, Holiday Special, the Ewok movies, the many animated tv series - and literally bought the t-shirt…
…we just ask to have the option to purchase the unaltered original Star Wars Trilogy on a modern, high quality, digital format.’
^ some bloke named Jay. (paraphrased)
• #ReleaseTheOriginalTrilogy | doubleofive’s ‘Disney+ Should Offer the Star Wars Original Cuts’ article on the Wired website
^ A quality and comprehensive article on why the films are important to the people who grew up with them, why they wish to have the option to experience them as they originally were released - as well as preserving important and cultural film history for everyone to view and enjoy. A reminder that the various ‘Special Edition’ versions are NOT the award-winning, iconic, landmark & ground-breaking original version of the films. And highlights just why we are here - some of us for many years, and some just taking our first steps…

Rebels striking from a hidden base (sort of) have won their first victory - as acknowledged by Lucasfilm, in May 2006…
A screenshot image of the article on the Baltimore Sun website from the 5th May 2006, featuring quotes from Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh about the OriginalTrilogy•com - the passion of the fans here - as well as acknowledging that the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy films are “…the movies that some fans have always wanted own, because they’re the ones they first saw in theaters.”…
An abridged screenshot image of Jay’s post on the OriginalTrilogy•com at the time:-
The fan pressure campaign spearheaded by the OT•com and their members & petition… resulted in Lucasfilm relenting… and they finally agreed to release the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy films on DVD.
Jay’s actual post can be found here - via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine (read from the bottom of the page to the top)
A screenshot image of StarWars•com’s announcement re the unaltered Original Trilogy being released on DVD for the first time (and only time) - as linked to in Jay’s post, above:-
StarWars•com’s actual post on the announcement can be found here - also via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine
Then, later in May… came the news that coming unaltered theatrical version release on DVD would be in letterbox format - and not anamorphic widescreen. Followed by the reveal that the transfer would be from what was used for the 1993 Definitive Edition Laserdiscs - a 13 year old project and, even back then (in 2006), of substandard quality - using compressed sound and adding DVNR to reduce the picture quality and detail further.
Fans here and elsewhere then immediately contacted Lucasfilm via email, phonecalls, faxes, and letters - politely informing them of our dissatisfaction with their decision to use this substandard transfer as a means to release the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy on DVD…
An abridged screenshot image of Jay’s post on the OriginalTrilogy•com at the time:-
^ Jay’s actual post can be found here - via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine (read from the bottom of the page to the top)
Just days later, after receiving a barrage of criticism for their choice to use such a 13 year old substandard and limited quality laserdisc transfer for the coming 2006 DVD release, Lucasfilm then released this… somewhat nonsensical and factually disingenuous… statement in reply:-
(The actual post can be viewed here - via the Internet Archive’s WayBack Machine)
To date this is the only time the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy has been officially released on a digital format…
More detailed info on the 2006 OT DVD release itself can be found at the SaveStarWars•com website, in the article titled ‘Got GOUT? The 2006 Original Version DVD Bonus Feature Fiasco’, and also in the An Index Thread for General Star Wars Discussion… - in the ‘Archival / Historical discussions’ section.
In 2010 George Lucas announced that a release of the Star Wars Saga on blu ray would occur in the following year (for what would be a new version of the Original Trilogy with more even more changes made - aka the ‘2011 Special Editions’)…
…featuring more claims, by George himself, as to why the unaltered theatrical version of the Original Trilogy could not be restored or included:-
^ an abridged screenshot image of the full ‘Star Wars Films Coming to Blu-ray Next Year’ article at the New York Times.
Again, like the Lucasfilm PR release in 2006, George words in the above article above are somewhat disingenuous - in that there is no need to once more “go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally” when if fact you only need to restore & digitise the original scenes not used for the 1997 Special Edition, and then re-edit those scenes back into the film - not the whole process as stated by George - after all, the rest of the digitised restoration has already been completed.
The same applies to George’s claim that “It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.” - again… you only need to restore & digitise the original scenes not used for the 1997 Special Edition, and then re-edit those scenes back into the film - not the whole process as stated by George - after all, the rest of the digitised restoration has already been completed.
SaveStarWars•com’s article on George Lucas’ 2011 blu ray announcement and restoration claims - ‘The Star Wars Blu-Ray Blues’ - goes into further detail on this:-

To help navigate your way around this Rebel Base - learning how this place works (and doesn’t) - the following may be of some use:-
The ❕ Welcome to the OriginalTrilogy.com | Introduce yourself in here | Useful info within ❕ is just that; a place to make your first post on here + for longstanding members to welcome new additions to our community - along with some useful info…
Secondly, the About and Help sections may be of interest to you regarding this site and what the OriginalTrilogy•com is about.
Thirdly, the ‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - some info & answers to members’ queries thread should also hopefully be of some help as to many of the functions of the site, along with other related info as well.
The Announcements Section - including Site Rules & Guidelines, Fan Edit & Preservation Rules & FAQ, as well info for Signatures, Linking Policy for Downloads, and Plot Spoiler Policy (and much more) that may be of use too.
If you are having any issues with the site, have a question, an idea to improve the site, or would like to give some feedback - then these can be done in the Feedback Forum and General Assistance sections.
There are also several Index Threads pinned at the top of many respective sections of the OT•com - which may help members find various topics of discussion, fan edits, preservations and other projects etc.
To Join the OT.com Discord server! click on the link. There is also the OriginalTrilogy.com Twitter too.
The 'An OriginalTrilogy.com Timeline | a history of the site | the why & how it came to be…’ thread not only chronicles the main events of this community - it also provides background information on the changes made to the Original Trilogy films.
The ‘Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes’ thread by doubleofive contains many sources of information as to the numerous changes made to the Original Trilogy films over time - as well as serving as an insightful and comprehensive discussion thread and reference point on the subject.
The ‘Some useful OT.com threads re the suppression of the unaltered theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy films’ thread - highlighting just a few of the many discussion threads focusing on our love and appreciation for the OT - and ongoing attempts to achieve a modern, high quality, official release of the unaltered theatrical cuts of the classic Star Wars movies.
The 'Naysayer Guide’ by people who DON’T want an unaltered theatrical release of the Original Trilogy - on a modern high quality digital format; with factual information and answers to many of the quite uninformed, somewhat ignorant, and incorrect claims & statements over the years by people who don’t want a new release of the original unaltered theatrical cuts.
Also, the ‘George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist…’ thread attempts to highlight and catalog some of the revisionism, altering of history and contradictory claims by George Lucas / Lucasfilm as to the formation, planning and history of the Star Wars films and universe therein.
(and take the time to look around to see how this place works - and doesn’t - before posting requests for projects on here - thank you)
The OriginalTrilogy•com is a community where a ‘read first - post after’ mantra benefits everyone here - especially for the ‘Fan Project’ sections. We appreciate some may be excited to see the projects that feature on here - information on how to acquire them is readily available - yet patience is also required. If you bring impatience, entitlement, aggressive or vitriolic attitudes, personal attacks, or toxicity… then expect some choice words in return - and also expect your stay on here to be a short one.
Do NOT create a new thread asking ‘for a link to’… to Harmy’s Despecialized Editions, TN1’s 4K77/80/83, adywan’s Revisited Edits, the Hal9000 Edits, or any other project listed on this site. It is for you to take 5 minutes and go find the relevant project on here, for you to then read up on what the project is about, and then how to acquire it. Do not ask / expect others to do this simple task for you - we’ve had hundreds of such entitled requests over the years - and the patience of community members here understandably wears thin. If thousands of people have managed to find, read up on, and then acquire these projects listed on here over the years… then you can too. A little patience - and a ‘read first - post after’ mantra - goes a long way on here…
These ‘signpost’ threads, featuring useful info and links to the five most sought-after fan projects, may be of interest…
• Some info & help for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions of the Original Trilogy…
• Some info & help for Puggo’s Grande 16mm preservations of the Original Trilogy…
• Some info & help for TN1’s 4K77, 4K80 & 4K83 preservation projects of the Original Trilogy…
• Some info & help for adywan’s Revisited Editions of the Original Trilogy…
• Some info & help for the Hal 9000 Edits of the Prequel & Sequel Trilogies (+ more)
Obviously there are countless more projects in the four main Project Index threads in each of the ‘Fan Project’ sections of the site…
Star Wars Preservation : Star Wars Fan Edits and Misc. : Preservation of Other Properties : Fan Edits and Projects for Other Properties
We’re a diverse and welcoming community - the site is after all based on a love & reverence for all things Star Wars. This is especially so for the Original Trilogy - with many on here viewing the Star Wars universe through a distinct OT-focused lens or perspective - as well as having a fervour for the unaltered theatrical cuts of the three iconic films, obviously. Yet there is also a respect for everything else from the Galaxy Far Far Away. Yes, even The Holiday Special, maybe…
Take your time to look around the site before posting - and to also get a feel for the place. We are not like reddit or 4chan etc (not that there’s anything wrong with those sites) - we’re just a little different… more of an old-skool site ‘for a more civilised age’.
The upshot is ‘Be Civil - Be Cool’; passionate - yet cordial discussion & wide-ranging views are both welcome and encouraged - toxicity, personal attacks, aggressive or vitriolic attitudes, disingenuous bad faith arguments - including agenda-led/toxic/FDM type videos, trolls & WUM behaviour are not - and choosing that path will likely see your stay on here being a short one.
To paraphrase Irvin Kershner, quoted whilst directing Empire Strikes Back… ‘fight for what you love - not because you hate’.
A reminder that a significant number of members on here are fans made to feel unwelcome at certain other Star Wars sites - or were censored or even banned for discussing the unaltered cuts, or highlighting Lucas’ disingenuous statements & alterations to SW history.
Also, a number of preservationists, fan editors, and people making other fan-made projects (such as documentaries) over the years here on the OriginalTrilogy•com have received death threats, threats in general, and ‘threats to life’ - unless they ceased work on, or distribution of, their freely-available projects. These threats were made from other Star Wars fans / zealots who see such projects on here from this community… as somehow insulting or derogatory to George Lucas, the wider Star Wars fandom, or to their own beliefs.
Beliefs such as preservations of the unaltered theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy should no longer exist or be seen, or that fan edits desecrate George’s ‘vision’(s). Or fans seemingly deeply offended - even triggered to anger and threats - by cited articles, projects, and documentaries from fans here chronicling a more complete and accurate history of Star Wars… than that of the re-written, somewhat selective, and retconned version of history often found in official or licensed content and sources from Lucas / Lucasfilm.
OriginalTrilogy•com is a site to openly talk about the revered original cuts of the 3 iconic Star Wars films and its full, factual history.
The ‘Fandom’ section of An Index & Help Thread for Original Trilogy Discussion and A brief overview of the OriginalTrilogy•com down the years… may also be of interest for a more in-depth history of this unique fan community / for further reading.
We hope you enjoy your time on here - as thousands of others already have, currently do, and will - in the future to come. 👍
Hopefully the OriginalTrilogy•com Timeline Thread will help chronicle just some of the rich history from this immense and unique site - from humble beginnings as home and beacon for the petition (for a release of the theatrical cuts to be released on DVD) - with also becoming an effective resource for the fan pressure campaign shortly after - to then becoming a community hub for many like-minded Star Wars fans in general. It’s further evolution over time to be a home for some superb and varied fan preservations, fan edits and projects - plus documentaries, technical, audio, and archival endeavours etc. As well as discussing some of the more prevalent news and events from in and around Star Wars since 2003 (or maybe 2002…), and also some of the other intriguing ventures from Star Wars fandom since.
Those of us who have been on here from the start, with the successful fan-led petition campaign on here resulting in Lucas finally relenting on previous promises that the theatrical cuts of the OT would not be seen again on home media again, actually seeing such a release (albeit a lazy, obsolete and intentionally sub-standard quality release being the 2006 ‘GOUT’ DVDs - as ‘bonus discs’ as part of a repackaging of the 2004 Special Editions on DVD). By this time members of the OT had long undertaken their own projects to preserve the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy in the best possible quality, along with other similar projects in assembling a more complete and thorough Special Edition than Lucasfilm had rushed out with many baffling image and quality control issues.
Some members, especially those around at the time of the release of the Original Trilogy, also catalogue Lucas remarks and statements… from both around the time of the early Special Editions - and also in the years before… ranging from his re-writing of Star Wars history, his previous decrees that movies should not be digitally altered, that films belong to the public once released etc… to many of his disingenuous and debunked edicts as why there couldn’t be an actual quality release for the theatrical cuts of the OT. Even today, members still highlight and discuss Lucas’ divisive and gaslighting statements, and the nonsensical claims he continues to make (see the ‘Archival / Historical Discussions’ section of An Index for Original Trilogy Discussion for more).
Members contributions also resulted in projects such as ‘The People vs George Lucas’ documentary, the ‘The Secret History Of Star Wars’ book, and the ‘Saving Star Wars’ website, and the ‘Star Wars Visual Comparisons’ platforms (StarWarsVisComp)… amongst many other fine projects looking to give an authentic and accurate portrayal of Star Wars history and events. Such projects helping to highlight and redress many of the numerous retconned claims and mythologising by George… that even many of the more ardent Lucas-fans have now come to acknowledge and accept… such as Lucas certainly not having 'it all planned out from the start’™ or that 'Star Wars was always the tragedy of Darth Vader’™ etc.
The forum also served as a haven for those fans who were censored and banned from the official forums and other similar sites (notably TFn) in the early-mid 2000s - for simply wanting to discuss the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy, the issues with the Special Editions, and highlighting Lucas’ revisionism and re-writing of history. Unfortunately the site also became a target for some Lucas zealots and bad-faith actors - issuing threats to fans undertaking such preservation projects and edits, or even for simply debunking Lucas’ claims and statements over the years. Even today, threats to life are still issued by some Lucas zealots, along with dismissing efforts made by members on here over time. (See the ‘Other websites / communities supposed issues with the OT•com or the unaltered theatrical cuts’ section of An Index for Original Trilogy Discussion for more).
However, today… thanks to fan-made preservations on here and like-minded sister-sites… everyone now have an option and choice to view and experience the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy on 4K/UHD and HD - whether that be the 4K77 / 4K80 / 4K83 projects, Harmy’s Despecialized Editions, oohteedee 4K’s projects, TR2N’s 4K AI efforts, and a growing number of other quality fan preservations. Not to forget the countless other fan preservations made across the long journey on here - from laserdisc & VHS rips to DVD transfers, fan edits, and numerous other fan projects (a huge shout-out for the OT Filmumentaries).
Still the OriginalTrilogy•com remains and thrives - whilst persevering to hold George’s many baffling, gaslighting and divisive claims, oft-debunked statements, and ongoing retcons and rewrites of history to scrutiny and account…
…and continues to ask for that option - that choice - to have a high quality official release of the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy made available on a modern digital format… completed with the love, care and attention it so deserves.
📍 A few available Original Trilogy Preservations - from a long time ago . . . .
2024 Edit: If anyone would like some links to any of the Original Trilogy preservation projects below… send me a PM. 👍
Below are just a few of the many legacy Original Trilogy preservation projects undertaken by the amazing community here over the years - an overview of sorts for ‘the journey of getting from there to here’. The aim is to also include a little something from across all ‘four corners of the globe’ - featuring a number of both English and non-English language releases and projects.
Some of these heritage and ‘labour of love’ preservations may have become overlooked, forgotten, lost, difficult to acquire over time… or may have succumbed to the dreaded ‘disc failure’… and this is merely my own attempt to try and remedy that. Also featured are some other endeavours across the GFFA which may be of interest - as well as some more recent OT projects…
Note: You must be an active/contributing member of the site; someone with 50+ posts - without including any ‘link request’ posts. Please do NOT ask me for links to any other projects - I only have links for the projects listed below (via GoFile / Mega / GoogleDrive).
For traffic issues: please do NOT share any links I give you - though feel free to re-upload any project below and then share those links.
If anybody would like to share any legacy projects they have for other OT preservations on the OT•com not listed below - PM me. 👍

^ A massive thank you to Fated-Dualist for taking on my less than half-finished and abandoned projects above and completing them in a far better manner than I could have come up with. Originally, I had ideas for the threads being ‘pinned’ threads up in Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases as being ‘default’ or centralised discussion threads - merging any laterly-created SE-focused threads with these - in a bid to make it easier for everyone to find info and chat on each of the various Special Editions. Other projects and events took precedent over time, so they waned for a while until Fated took them on, put in a great amount of researching and sorting threads on here, adding intriguing or informative articles found online. All kudos, credit, and many positive waves to them. A massive thank also applies below; for similar half-arsed incomplete projects taken up by Gonk from JWF and the early days on here - with some dedicated researching and sorting of countless threads on here too. All kudos, credit, and many positive waves to them, both.

^ a mega-merge thread for many of the non-abusive ‘Where are the links/threads for Despecialized?’ etc queries over the years. The really abusive and overtly entitled posts and threads demanding the DEED are in the Trash. I only wish I did a similar thread for the 4K77/80/83 projects too, given the increasing numbers of new people turning up here to simply demand links - along with requests for them to be available in certain formats and specs to their own personal liking - without even bothering to look for the actual 4K77 / 4K80 / 4K83 project threads, post in them, reading up on how to get them, how to join the TheStarWarsTrilogy forums, or the site / project rules etc. This despite all relevant threads being clearly labelled & signposted with any actual information required. And this…

^ adopts Ron Howard narrator’s voice: “They did not read the actual thread before posting…” 😉
Hopefully a few the above ‘info’ posts, threads and Indexes have been of some use, help or interest to both members and lurkers down the years. Much of the above content is a little dry, plodding or prosaic - though I hope most of the information within them appears somewhat clear and concise.
Some of it is also little repetitive; especially the About, Help, Welcome To The OT.com, How Do I Do This On The OT.com? and the Project Index threads. This is mainly to try and reduce the countless entitled and lazy requests / demands seen on here down the years; the “I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find the link for Project X - I want the link to Project X” (often because they have NOT actually looked or even given a cursory glance at how things work on here - or even how to ask for a project on here). If the information required is repeatedly signposted across the site that should no longer be an issue - or as much of an issue…
Over time I hope others with far better and more eloquent writing skills (and humour!) put together some higher quality, improved, and more expansive info posts / threads / Indexes to replace my humble efforts found above. Until then, I hope they’ll suffice. MTFBWY… Always.
There are countless other informative threads, preservation, fan edits, and other quality endeavours on here - hopefully this will inspire fellow members (both old and new, or ‘older’ and younger 😉) to search for some of the lesser-known projects - and maybe read up on some of the fairly rare / oft-forgotten information available in the many various intriguing threads on here.
If you have any suggestions, or for specific threads or completed projects to be added to this list, please post them below (or PM me) - or please feel free to add your own list of insightful, informative or just favourite or appealing links below too.
Also, if you see any broken links or errors etc please let me know - thank you.
PS - many of the one-line descriptions for the projects featured in here have been taken from the Editor’s / Preservationist’s own threads or comments (and do not reflect my own eccentric interpretations, oft-wrong views, and top rhyming abilities 😉).

It is like a time capsule with so much information to absorb. I look forward to reading through many of the projects listed here - and also searching for others in the index threads too.
Thankyou 😃
