A general Sports thread: news, results, funny, inspiring, weird, controversies, gestures etc...

There are a fair few sports related threads throughout the Culture section, and a few listed in the Culture Index thread too, though thought it may be worth having a general sports thread as well…

For those events (and even sports) that likely may not warrant enough interest for their own threads - whether it be news, results, humour, inspiring, weird, controversial, or sporting gestures, sport in your community, playing it, getting fit, overcoming the odds, the sublime, or just sporting stuff you like etc.

They have a deal with that one football player who had the audacity to peacefully protest in a nondisruptive way that warbler doesn’t like.

I seriously don’t know why I get so much grief for my stance. I am simply patriotic. I don’t like people being disrespectful to the National Anthem. I agree they have the Constitutional and legal right to protest and kneel during the National Anthem. But that doesn’t mean I have to agree with what they do. I have a right to not like their forum of protest and the right to not support it by not buying products from companies that put anthem protesters in their ads.

‘Colin Kaepernick grievance set for trial after NFL dismissal request is denied’…

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/aug/30/colin-kaepernick-grievance-nfl-trial

Hope Colin and others who seemingly may have been blackballed by the NFL do get signed - and if the NFL’s own rules were broken by those teams under it’s own Collective Bargaining Agreement (teams and the NFL are forbidden from coming together to deprive a player of employment), that they are admonished too.

Maybe even people will get back to the issue as to why people have taken the knee - instead of deflecting away from it.

‘I can think of nothing more American’: Beto O’Rourke responds to question on NFL protests…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAw9eXXVwfM

^ Don’t know who the politician speaking is, but seems to give a decent, reasoned and balanced overview on the situation. Am sure others will disagree.

Seems what people who are taking a knee want to highlight issues that are important to them, their friends, families, their communities, to their country - in a bid to make it fairer, better, and just - seems quite ‘patriotic’ that - fighting for that better future, for everyone.

Despite what I think of what Kaepernick did, I will agree it does not justify violating the NFL’s own rules or the collective bargaining agreement.

That’s why you get “grieve” from me. I don’t like patriotism. I don’t like it when people demand flag worship and demand that people submit.

I don’t like people being disrespectful to the National Anthem.

I don’t even see how it’s disrespectful. Would you rather he stand up and spit at the flag and scream at the top of his lungs during the anthem? Now that would be disrespectful. Isn’t it disrespectful to play the anthem at sporting events anyway? Isn’t that dumbing it down? Why not play it before movies and concerts at that point? I think it’s great that Nike is standing with Kaepernick.

Thanks for the lesson on the 1st amendment.

God, you really are wrong about everything aren’t you? Teaching kids to question everything is “clueless”? And “war is peace” too I guess.

Typo corrected.

I don’t like patriotism. I don’t like it when people demand flag worship and demand that people submit.

I never said people should be forced to “submit” and I don’t worship the flag.

I don’t like people being disrespectful to the National Anthem.

I don’t even see how it’s disrespectful. Would you rather he stand up and spit at the flag and scream at the top of his lungs during the anthem. Now that would be disrespectful.

That would be even more disrespectful.

Isn’t it disrespectful to play the anthem at sporting events anyway?

I fail to see why. We’ve done so for years.

Isn’t that dumbing it down?

Not in my opinion.

Why not play it before movies and concerts at that point?

It has become tradition to play it be sporting events, it never became tradition to play it before movies and concerts.

I agree they have the Constitutional and legal right to protest and kneel during the National Anthem. But that doesn’t mean I have to agree with what they do. I have a right to not like their forum of protest and the right to not support it by not buying products from companies that put anthem protesters in their ads.

Sheesh.

He’s said a lot more than teach kids to question everything.

If you honestly want that question answered (and in my humble opinion you aren’t getting grief - and nor is it about YOUR ‘stance’) it may be better suited to something like the ‘Politics’ thread (where it has already been discussed?) or ‘Warbler feedback’ thread - and not in here, derailing this one.

Thanks.

I wasn’t intending to derail your thread.

But very well, please everyone take any responses to my posts on the anthem protests to the political thread.

Btw, if this thread indeed got derailed, then I am not the only guilty party.

No worries, Warbler - though there are no guilty parties.

https://twitter.com/Kaepernick7/status/1037387722107830272 - a new video from Kaepernick / Nike.

Find it strange that some people are burning their Nike gear - why not just give it to those who’d be grateful or in need for footwear or clothing instead? And if they feel the need to inform others on the internet of their dissatisfaction or anger with Nike… film and show that kind & beneficial gesture instead?

Which article are you referring to? The one where it was announced that Nike hired Kaepernick? I have read it. My opinion on him is unchanged.

‘Martina Navratilova: What Serena Got Wrong’… (from the US Open final)

Just because the guys might be able to get away with it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.

Seems a well written and balanced piece that, offering some insight, and hope that the authorities address failings on show - as well as Serena too.
