Covers & Fan Art projects etc - a thread for feedback, advice, suggestions, input, or help

We are fortunate to have an array of talent on the OT•com - not just Fan Editors & Preservationists - but technically-orientated people too - and also many quality artists here in the ‘Case Covers, Disc Labels, and Fan Art’ section…

From professionals to talented enthusiasts, to people who just like a certain covers for their Fan Edits or projects - or something to fit in their collection, those looking for something just a little different… through to members like me who dabble in MS Paint 😉 - or just appreciate art, or those here that just like what they see.

This thread is for those members working on a cover, disc label, poster, image, or piece of fan art etc - and would like some feedback from fellow site members - or some advice, an opinion, input or suggestions, a ‘what do you think so far?’ query, or maybe even to ask for some technical help or insight with their project…

Hopefully it’ll be of use - though it may just sink without a trace!

Please remember to be helpful & encouraging when offering an opinion - and while constructive criticism may be welcome - don’t be a dick about anyone’s projects or abilities here. We’re all learning - trying to improve - and we all started somewhere (it’s just some us never actually got past MS Paint…)

Hi Oojason, just for clarification:

Is it your intent to reserve this thread for people looking for insight, advice, feedback, or help on Star Wars related projects?

Or would posts from people looking for any of the above regarding projects from other media sources also be welcome?

I have been working on a DVD box set design for my six favorite Alfred Hitchcock films:

Dial M For Murder
Rear Window
Vertigo
North By Northwest
Psycho
The Birds

I’d like to share my work in progress and get feedback and/or ideas from those here who might have a better eye for graphic design than I do.

I have measured pretty meticulously, using the editions of the DVDs that I own, while also accounting for the width of the bookbinding chipboard I am using for the box. And since this isn’t the first time I’ve made a box set, I’m pretty sure I don’t need any help on the mechanics of putting one together.

However, when I have put sets together before, I always either just used a project someone shared online, or altered a good completed design I found to my liking.

But this time, though I am still using elements I found from the internet, as far as the overall box design goes, I’m starting from scratch. And methods of using principles of graphic design to make a composition better are ideas with which I have only a beginners level of familiarity. My project is fairly primitive. I just used MS Word for the most part, with the exception of using GIMP for the necktie coloration. So I’d like to share what I’ve done so far and get feedback.

To see what I have put together so far, use this link to view the PDF.

Are there any obvious design gaffes that stand out? How about choice of fonts? What do you think of the fan-art silhouette images on the back? Do you think the black-and-white-with-a-splotch-of-red motif is effective? Is the speckle of blood spatter on the spine too macabre, or just the right level of it? How’s blurb of text on the back sound? And if anything is sub-par, do you have alternative ideas?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

Hi. Any suggestions on getting either an empty slipcase and case art or finding someone/where to get it made. Specifically I’m looking for case art for the 2015 Complete Saga, as well as the slipcase into which it is housed. I have the 2011 edition, but don’t like the case or art work. The 2015 has the same discs but different case and housing/box for the case. Any suggestions?

There are some good ‘how-to’s’ on youtube on how to make your own slipcases, as well as info on how to make them / a custom box set in the An Index & Help Thread for Case Covers, Disc Labels, and Fan Art.

It is also worth checking out some of the generic cover sites listed in the Index thread for alternative art for the 2011 SE blu ray releases (and there may be some quality cover art in the Index which you could use or edit as an alternative too).

Good luck with it - let us know what you come up 👍
