Some proposed changes to the categories in the Star Wars section of the OT.com...

The General Star Wars Discussion section of the OT•com has grown into somewhat of an unwieldy beast over the past few years (5000+ threads) - especially with the addition of the Anthology films, Sequel Trilogy and animated tv series of late…

Given the forthcoming & future Star Wars releases - the Rian Johnson Trilogy, Weiss & Benioff Trilogy, The Mandalorian, a Cassian Andor series, a new season of Clone Wars, and likely even more content from the GFFA on the way - the moderators are considering splitting this part of the forum into more relevant and discernible categories.

Likely something akin to the following…

• General Star Wars Discussion
• Original Trilogy
• Prequel Trilogy
• Sequel Trilogy
• Beyond the Main Saga (ie, Anthology films, animated & live action tv series, future RJ & W&B content, Holiday Special, & Ewok films)
• The EU (ie, books, comics, games, soundtracks, music & radio dramas, cons & events, memberships)
• Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases
• Toys & Memorabilia

Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Edit: it turns out there really isn’t enough traffic / threads / talk on the Prequels and Sequels to warrant their own sections. Though a combined forum (along with some of the other GFFA releases) would likely be the way to go, and see what happens from there…

I think something along these lines is good, while not overwhelming people with categories:

• General Star Wars Discussion
• Episodes of the Star Wars Saga
• The Expanded Universe
• Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases
• Toys & Memorabilia

Then if you wanted to organize discussion of each trilogy or each film, you could have individual stickied threads for general discussion of each trilogy/film in the saga subforum.

I like it, though I’d eliminate “General Star Wars Discussion”. With discussion of the Saga/spinoffs/EU split off into their own subforums, I don’t think there’d be much left to discuss there.

I like the general idea, but i too caution against too many subcategories.

everything in one place is a mess
a separate place for every is a graveyard - since there is no real search, people won’t know where things belong, so either we will get lots of dup posts, or else topics will just go dead as less eyes get into the various sub-forums.

I agree that too many sub forums might fragment readers and have a negative impact on discussion. Maybe separate it out by type of media?

-Star Wars Movies & TV
-Video Games
-Theme Parks & Exhibits
-Novels & Comics
-Theatrical Cuts vs. Re-releases
-Toys & Memorobilia

You could make a solid argument for splitting some of those into separate categories (especially movies and TV), but I think there’s enough overlap to justify keeping them together. It’ll be hard to talk about, say, the Cassian show without also talking about Rogue One.

Unless there is also going to be an aggregator thread that keeps everything together for easy browsing, I wouldn’t separate. If that’s in the works, sure.

I don’t think separating is necessary. It’s messy now, but the amount of posts per day is low enough that the messiness doesn’t cause you to miss ongoing conversations because the section is overflowing. Like damage said, separating too much could simply cause ghost towns.

If organization is the issue, perhaps we could simply add tags to the threads that denote the different topics? So like if I have no interest in the EU, I can just skim over any thread with, say, a purple icon.

^ I like Dom’s idea. Add categories / flairs when creating a new thread.

I don’t think the increase in media is going to over complicate too much. We’ll just stop redundantly arguing about the Last Jedi. 😉

I am just a long time lurker, though thought I would join in here as seems a great place to talk Star Wars. Just my view that it would be cool to have a section just for O-T threads.

Tighten Up and then turn it all the way up to 11!

The Expanded Universe & General Star Wars Discussion forum is being split into two sections…

The Expanded Universe

&

General Star Wars Discussion

It’ll likely take a few days for the relevant threads to be moved across into their new sections.

Edit: As of Sunday night the relevant threads have all been moved to the correct forums. In a few days I’ll do another check through for any overlooked threads / mistakes etc - there’s bound to be a few errors 😉

Sorry for any inconvenience whilst the new categorisation took place.

Hopefully the re-categorisations of late will help members find what they want to talk about a little more easily - and also avoid what they don’t want to talk about…

I really love the new category change.

Is something different with the font too? I like it.

So it’s common knowledge that the Scriptwriting section is not the most popular category on the site, but I wonder if a change in placement could help that (for totally non-self-serving reasons, of course 😉).

Currently the categories for fan projects read:

Star Wars Preservation
Star Wars Fan Edits and Other Projects
Preservation of Other Properties
Fan Edits and Projects for Other Properties
Case Covers, Disc Labels, and Fan Art
How-To’s and Technical Discussions

and way at the bottom

Script Writing and Re-writing

My question is, would it not make more sense to have the Script Writing section grouped with other fan projects? It’s kinda weird that it’s hanging out down there past the tech discussion.

My suggestion would be to either move it right above the ‘Case Covers’ category since that keeps it grouped with general fan projects, or to place it between the Star Wars Fan Edits and the Preservation of Other Properties, since the writing section intersects both Star Wars and non-Star Wars material.

Just my two cents!
