Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

CatBus said:

But apparently at some point I must have said something about it, because when I said we were gonna watch Star Wars, he rolled his eyes at me and sighed and said: "It doesn't have dinosaurs in it, does it?" When I assured him there would definitely be no dinosaurs, he seemed more interested.

BroncoSport said:

The hopes of a great Star Wars experience were shut down when the BluRay disc was stopped as soon as the first dinosaur was seen in the "new" film...  yuck!!!

This is certainly OT, but did I miss something???  Are there dinosaurs in the 7,8,9 sequels?

Star Wars Trilogy LP Preservations (Released)

7FN-

AntcuFaalb recently brought this project to my (and others) attention in the "Star Wars OT BONUS materials repository" thread with their post here, but also said that you had requested that your MySpleen listing be removed.  I don't know how long ago that all transpired, but I am writing you to ask if you would be willing to give sharing on MySpleen another chance?

Thank you sincerely for your clear dedication to this project and for considering this request!

It was on MySpleen, but 7FN had the listing removed by one of the mods after he got upset by the lack of comments and the high number of leechers. I imagine he'd do the same if I were to make another torrent and upload it there.

That's unfortunate.  Yeah, I definitely would not ask for the sharing of an OT forum member's project against the will of its author.  That being said, I think I'll at least try asking 7FN for permission in their "Star Wars Trilogy LP Preservations" thread.

7FN did the best preservation of the "Story Of" LPs. They're available on a.b.starwars (Usenet).

AntcuFaalb-

Thank you for the heads up!  Added entries for "The 7FN Collection" and "The ABC Collection" to the above.  One of my hopes with this repository is to help make (the general direction of) as much non-retail or no longer commercially available OT BONUS material related content as freely available as possible.  While Usenet is certainly a viable and useful method of file sharing, it is generally more complicated and in most all instances does require a paid service for binary access.

I could not find 7FN's the "Story Of" LP preservations on MySpleen…would you (or anyone else) possibly be willing to up it to MySpleen just long enough for it to catch on?

All the best! ;)

Good stuff here. Thanks for your efforts in organizing this information!

Thank you bro!  To really be much of a "repository" though, I do definitely wish to solicit the help of my fellow Star Wars nerds, geeks, dorks, and "other" in further expanding and helping to keep this effort up-to-date (while maintaining both quality and focus)…

To that effect, I have made several "silent" additions to the original posts above over the course of the past week!

Please enjoy responsibly! ;)

Info: Behind the scenes footage I've never seen
Time

dark_jedi's link from a few months back appears to have expired.  I am not certain if he had shared the smaller (approx 32.5 MB) "SD" or the larger (approx 81.0 MB) "HD" video, but the following are a couple DL links to an unaltered direct download of the larger 640x480 pixel "(not really) HD" MPEG-4 video:

-> http://d01.megashares.com/dl/GbPadni/953695_10151755873003156_1073427117_n.mp4

Many THANKS to pittrek for creating this thread, poita for the useful clarification post, to adywan for the original FB page link, and (of course) to Jason Eaton for providing us all with this wonderful archival footage.

All the best! ;)

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

A few days ago I made this post asking some questions about Harmy's plans for his upcoming STAR WARS Despecialized Edition v2.5 BONUS disc…Harmy’s reply can be found in it's entirety here.

A brief discussion then continued regarding the BONUS disc and its content, including a brief exchange between Harmy, hairy_hen, and Moth3r about the re-kindled possibility of an original featurette about DeEd audio tracks.

Like I said, it's been a few days…the above is some context for the following reply which I've been working on (developing the 2nd half) since:

Harmy said:

Actually, I am currently writing a script for a Despecialized Edition documentary, of which the Sources doc will be only a small part.

Right on!  Thank you for treating us this really nifty sounding work in progress…I am totally looking forward to seeing this expanded Despecialized Edition documentary!

As the bonus disc 2 will be mostly or entirely be comprised of original DeEd materials, would a AVCHD release format make sense make sense over a full-fledged BD build (obviously ONLY if the bonus materials would fit easily enough onto a DVD9)?

Also, I don't know if it would seem completely out of place to still include the original Sources doc (as more of a historical nod to the progression of this project), itself…but I am really looking forward to seeing the final product, in whatever form that it might take and whenever it is ready! ;)

Harmy said:

And I don't plan to put any non-DeEd related stuff on there, except maybe some trailers, which I will try to recreate in HD.

I am really happy that you're working on an expanded DeEd documentary specific to this project that even further showcases all that has gone into it (and I am certain that it will be way cool)!

While there have been several past efforts to bring together both released and unreleased bonus OT materials…the idea of a more "definitive" BONUS materials collection effort has kinda really taken hold in my mind over the past few days and as a result, here's a NEW repository thread (which may eventually serve as a "spring board" to more):

-> http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-OT-BONUS-materials-repository/post/665358/

In any event, thank you again to Harmy (and to every one else who has contributed) for all your work in producing this AMAZING Despecialized Edition effort! :D

“Version History”

(v1.0fc15) - 11.08.2013:

  • Added Star Wars:  Music by John Williams (TV Movie 1980, Color, 59 min) listing.
  • Added link to Rinzler’s StarWars.com Author blog along with OT.com forum and RandomHouse.com links to each of his “The Making of Star Wars” book titles.
  • Changed “Return of the Ewok” (Video 1982) to “Return of the Ewok” (Video 1982, Color, 24 min).
  • Moved imdb.com link to top of “The Star Wars Holiday Special” (TV Movie 1978, Color, 97 min) and “Return of the Ewok” (Video 1982, Color, 24 min) listings for consistency.

(v1.0fc14) - 11.05.2013 [Special Guy Fawkes edition!]

  • Re-arranged title order under The ocpmovie Collection and added several new links to “Return of the Ewok” (Video 1982) listing.

(v1.0fc13) - 11.04.2013:

  • Added IMDb film “type” (ie. “TV Movie”, “Video”, ect) designations to all titles with IMDb listings.
  • Added Wikipedia.org links to “Empire of Dreams: The story of the Star Wars Trilogy” (TV Movie 2004), “The Making of Star Wars” (TV Movie 1977), “The Empire Strikes Back: SPFX” (TV Movie 1980), and “Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi” (TV Movie 1983).
  • Re-ordered The Star Wars Documentaries (under Star Wars Blu-ray set) into the same order as they are listed on the retail Blu-ray cover art.
  • Fixed “The Star Wars Holiday Special” (TV Movie 1978) Cover Art link.
  • Retitled “The Making of Empire Strikes Back” by Michel Parbot (1980, Color, 26 min?) as “The Making of Empire Strikes Back” (1980, Color, 26 min?) by Michel Parbot and removed three essentially redundant February 28, 2013 links announcing the earlier (February 7, 2013) posting of video by StarWarsArchives.com onto YouTube.
  • Added Facebook Photo Albums link (to help provide easier access to the actual video postings) under EditDroid Demo Laserdisc (1983): “Return of The Jedi” Scene 50 Raw Takes (Dagobah).
  • Added YouTube links to “From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga” (TV Movie 1983), “How to Film the Impossible” (TV Episode 1985), and “When Star Wars Ruled the World” (TV Movie 2004).
  • Substantially revised The Making of the Original Trilogy [SERIES] (written by J.W. Rinzler, released as media rich Kindle and iBook Editions on October 22, 2013) and sub-listings to include the 720p iBook Edition, original hardback publication dates, a new Parka Blogs Book Review of “The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”, and a revised arrangement of associated links.
  • Fixed some lingering minor formatting inconsistencies.

(v1.0fc12) [HAPPY HALLOWEEN edition!!!] - 10.31.2013:

  • Added NEW “Version History”.
  • Resolved (for the most part) the TOO MANY CHARACTERS posting issue (short version:  DO NOT simply copy/paste extended text clips directly from MS Word into this forum…the OT.com Forum software attempts to retain the formatting GARBAGE MS Word html coding thus severely BLOATING your post with unnecessary characters).  My solution?  Copy paste or save into simple/plain text format FIRST, then copy the simple text version into your post.
  • Added “The Making of Empire Strikes Back” by Michel Parbot (1980, Color, 26 min?), “The Stars of ‘Star Wars’: Interviews from the Cast” (1999, Color, 93 min), and The Making of the Original Trilogy eBook [SERIES] (written by J.W. Rinzler, released as media rich Kindle Edition format on October 22, 2013) to MORE “Official” and “Unofficial” Documentaries, Featurettes, and Deleted Scenes.

  • Added babyhumdvd.blogspot.com link to The Babyhum Collection.
  • Added “Star Wars: The Making Of The Myth” (TV Episode UNKNOWN RELEASE DATE) under The Babyhum Collection.
  • Moved Star Wars on the Sci-Fi Channel - 20th Anniversary (hosted by Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams, released by Noneinc.com on June 29, 2012) to Fan Edits and Preservations (under new The Noneinc.com Collection).

(v1.0fc11) - 10.26.2013:

  • Switched the order of “From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga” (TV Movie 1983, Color, 65 min) and EditDroid Demo Laserdisc (1983): “Return of The Jedi” Scene 50 Raw Takes (Dagobah) in MORE “Official” and “Unofficial” Documentaries, Featurettes, and Deleted Scenes.
  • Added gizmodo.com link to EditDroid Demo Laserdisc (1983): “Return of The Jedi” Scene 50 Raw Takes (Dagobah).

  • Added The Star Tours Collections and The Treadwell Collection to Fan Edits and Preservations.
  • Added Kenner Star Wars Commercials 1978-1986, Clint’s Mix:  Saturday Night Live “THE BEST OF STAR WARS”, and Fantastic Films #20-Dec. 1980 [includes hilarious SW Saga speculative article] [PDF] to NEW zOTHER (odds and ends) section.

Star Wars OT BONUS materials repository
Time

There have been several substantial past efforts to bring together both released and unreleased BONUS Original Trilogy materials into various fan edit and preservation projects.

The purpose and scope of this thread is to provide information about the very BEST of these efforts, but specifically limited to:

1) the Original Trilogy (and primarily the NON-Special Edition, original theatrical OOT versions of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi)

2) BONUS material (including documentaries, interviews, deleted scenes, "making of" features, trailers, toy commercials, and the like) in the BEST quality available from various "official" AND "unofficial" sources.

The goal for this effort is to effectively use this thread as a well-organized and collaborative repository to better identify and (strictly within the confines of OT Forum policies stated HERE and HERE) point OT users in the "general direction" of non-commercial OT BONUS materials.

While it is certainly possible that I (or another OT forum member) may later use this OT BONUS materials repository as a spring board in an effort to produce NEW and original more "definitive" collection(s) of OT BONUS materials, I believe that this thread will provide a useful resource for both new and seasoned OT forum members alike!

All the best! ;)

p.s.  Due to current OT.com post size limits, I have broken the following into a series of posts (which I will gladly update and maintain as new information comes forth)…

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Truly, THANK YOU SO MUCH (to Harmy and to ALL those who have contributed) for providing us all with this truly AMAZING v2.5 release!!!

…and I do also have a few questions about the upcoming v2.5 Blu-ray release:

The game-plan to expand and further refine the v2.5 .mkv audio offerings to include even more lossless tracks, and then present it in BD25 size Blu-ray format with a full feature menu (including chapter stops matching the GOUT release) sounds excellent!  This keeps the focus for that disc on the full-length feature, itself, while allowing for an incredibly expansive offering that provides first-rate viewing and listening options to the widest audience possible (and greatly reduces Harmy's technical headache of trying to get too many goodies onto ONE disc).

As for the BONUS disc, what should we expect?  You have said that it will be released on a separate disc along with the BD25 format feature disc and that it will have a unique menu background design.  Also, I am a little confused about the mini-voiceover audition a few pages back…is this for a re-work of the original SOURCES feature and/or for something else entirely?  IF the SOURCES feature is to be re-worked, could you still include the original version with your voiceover…as that's going to be my favorite if there is a re-dubbed new version (no matter how silky smooth Mavimao's voice may be)?

I am really excited to see what I am hoping may be an expanded collection of NEW/ORIGINAL Despecialized "making of" bonus features (which I hope may still include an original audio re-master featurette by hairy_hen) alongside what I am hoping could be a well organized "anthology" of Star Wars (1977) bonus features (such as interviews, deleted scenes, "making of" features, trailers, toy commercials, and the like) in the best quality available from the many different "official" releases AND any other notable OT member preserved bonus feature offerings.  Whether you opt to go for a smaller ALL original offering OR more of a "definitive" collection of bonus materials, I have no doubt that it will indeed kick MUCH ass! ;)

All the best!

-A.S.

p.s  …and while I'm at it, could I get a bike, and a pony, a Tonka truck, and a lollipop?  Pretty please Mr. Harmy Clause? :D

Let's talk blu-ray burning...
Time

I am quite happy with my DIGISTOR external Blu-ray drive (the actual drive component is Panasonic):

http://www.digistor.com/Optical-Drives/External-Drives

I would also highly recommend DIGISTOR recordable media (which is manufactured by CMC Magnetics - a quality Taiwanese manufacturer, that produces "Made in Taiwan" Verbatim recordable DVD and BD discs):

http://www.digistor.com/Blu-ray-Recordable-Media

The BEST thing about DIGISTOR products is the company.  They are based in Campbell, California and stand by their products 110%.  Contact them about ANY coasters you may get, they will replace and ship them for FREE.

Receintly, I had intermittent issues burning their BD50 that turned south really bad (7 for 7 coasters trying to burn one folder of data to disc) in Toast 11…they extensively tested and have RESOLVED the issue completely (the problem, as it turned out, was in Toast 11) with ZERO coasters since, for more on that:

http://forums.support.roxio.com/topic/90195-toast-111-build-1072-stalls-at-100-complete-writing-lead-out/

Hope that helps! ;)

-A.S.

p.s.  The ACTUAL drive that I purchased is the DIGISTOR™ Personal Archive Blu-ray Burner for PC and Mac (Slot Load) - DIG-78112 and I tend to buy the 50GB BD-R Printable media.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

Well, here's hoping they do release the raw scans they've been sitting on for a while, before it's too late.

While I too am really excited to see the fruits of team negative1's efforts (just like I suppose EVERYONE keeping tabs on this thread), please do keep in mind that within the past week team_negative1 has replied twice to this thread HERE and (less than 48 hours ago) HERE to assure us that the effort is alive, well, and continuing forward.

I certainly can't speak for them, but I know that I find when I'm busy working on something and people around me just won't stop bugging me about it…it can become annoying rather quickly.  I am confident that team negative1 will continue to update us as to their progress (as they just recently re-affirmed to us) and I am sure that they will continue to work cooperatively in providing some "early access" raw source materials to deserving projects such as Harmy's Despecialized editions.

Yes, this represents quite an exciting and compelling project for which fans of the OOT can hardly wait to see…but let's be mindful enough to not crowd the good folks that are working diligently to deliver our collective opiate. ;)

(No offense intended to anyone here, I just thought it needed to be said.)

For that, I'd like to know what the best way to transfer a loss-less file over the internet..? I'm not very savvy about these things, and I don't have enough space on my dropbox.

Torrent (on MySpleen) may be the way to go for your FINALIZED project, but I would suggest a dedicated file host (and NOT torrent) for any work-in-progress, and perhaps even your finalized project.  Here are a couple suggestions that would likely work really well:

-> http://www.1fichier.com/en

-> https://mega.co.nz/

Some other possible candidates:

Approximately how big of files are we talking?

Info Wanted: Your ultimate Star Wars Collection...?
Time

I would include FINALIZED versions from each of the following active  "fan preservation" projects…

1. Harmy's "Despecialized Edition HD"

2. Team Blu's "Star Wars Original Trilogy Theatrical Edition Blu-ray Set"

3. team negative1's "star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version"

Kind regards,

Project Index: Star Wars Preservations <em>(last update 29th Oct '17)</em>
Time

Like many here, I simply abhor the "Special Edition" changes to the Original Original Theatrical (or OOT) version of Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983)…and while I would (and have at least a half-dozen times in several different media formats) gladly purchase a retail version of OOT, a "modern" restored version from either George Lucas or (new owner) Disney does not (currently) exist.  This is my primary reason for being here on originaltrilogy.com

Moth3r's first post to this thread is a useful guide to several excellent past Star Wars Preservation efforts available here on this forum (and for an excellent historical context account, I would also highly recommend reading the "Fan Preservations" page at SaveStarWars.com).

The two or (hopefully) three current/active "modern" full-feature projects that most excite me in delivering the closest/best original 1977, 1980, and 1983 theatrical experience are (in no particular order):*

1. Harmy's "Despecialized Edition HD"

This "Despecialized Edition" draws upon a wide variety of multiple sources to create an outstanding, high definition 720p (as close as humanly possible to, but NOT quite 100% exact OOT) experience compiled from the BEST source(s) available for any given scene.  (More on this project is available from each of their respective STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE JEDI threads…as well as Harmy's brief "Sources" documentary available HERE.)

2. Team Blu's "Star Wars Original Trilogy Theatrical Edition Blu-ray Set"

A quite remarkable extensively color corrected, de-jaggied, digitally cleaned high definition 720p "upscale" ENTIRELY, 100% sourced from George's Original Unaltered Theatrical (or GOUT) 2006 Bonus DVD version of the OOT.  (More on this project is available in THIS thread and in THIS post.)

3. team negative1's "star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version"

A high definition 1080p "conversion/preservation" taken from original scans "of the 35mm version of star wars from 1) spanish lpp print (6 reels) 2) english print (5 reels) + 1 partial reel".  (More on this project is available in THIS thread.)

Each of these three collaborative projects draws great strength from past and current full-feature and sub-projects by members of the originaltrillogy.com community, such as hairy_hen's "Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available]" available HERE and CatBus' "Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)" available HERE.

My sincere gratitude goes to ALL those (past and present) responsible for helping to further advance the development and preservation of the Original Original Theatrical version of the original Star Wars trilogy!

*(IMHO, no collection would be complete without ALL THREE of the above currently "in progress" Star Wars "Fan Preservation" efforts!)

Harmy said:

So, last year I released SW v2.0 on my birthday. This year I wanted to release v2.5 on this day but it didn't work out, so I decided to do something else to celebrate my birthday and release a workprint of reel 1 of The Empire Strikes Back v2.0.

Because I had a pre-set release date, I couldn't quite polish it as much as I wanted, so it is very much a work in progress and I already spotted quite a few blunders (including quite a few rendering errors, which are already there in the lossless render from After Effects - if anyone knows what could be causing these kind of bugs and how to avoid them, please help!) - it should nevertheless give you a fair idea of what ESB v2.0 will be like.

I'd of course like you to report any problems you find (at this point, all is game, even color). Please use the time code from the WP when reporting problems :-)

Here's a mirror of the muxed (video with sound) "ESB-v2.0-WP1-R1.mkv" as shared above:*

p.s.  Just noticed the first one is .mkv format ("ESB-v2.0-WP1-R1.mkv") and the mirror is in a .m2ts container ("ESB WP1 reel1.m2ts")…just curious, are both the same video content?

MEGA is another really good file host.  The one thing I have noticed for downside is backward compatibility (Safari and IE are NOT recommended due to their extensive use of advanced protocals)…also, I have read about SOME quality (file corruption) issues with completed DLs, but they are definitely an impressive looking file sharing option that is certainly worth a look due to their:

*generous FREE file UL/DL size limits

*solid FREE user UL and DL speeds

*impressive security features

Woot!

Wow - 12 hours to download this.  Is there a faster link?

Yeah, I'm getting the same 12 hours eta…I'm working on it, myself (and would be glad to mirror to another DL site or two), but perhaps someone somewhere (maybe in Europe?) is getting a significantly faster rate and could provide the mirror themselves?

p.s.  There are TONS of file hosts out there, but one that's particularly good for larger sized files and is pretty consistently solid for Europe and US folks (in my experience) is http://www.1fichier.com/en
