Just a quick heads up…for some strange reason, the “Star_Wars_SSE_TN1_v1_6.iso” appears to have AACS protection AND (I believe as a direct result) would NOT load properly in a “stock” copy of the current VLC (v2.2.4) for Mac and produced the following error message:

Blu-ray error
This Blu-ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it.

SOLUTION:
Please visit http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/ to DL and install the current “Keys database” and “AACS dynamic library” for your Windows, MacOS X or Linux-based system.
[NOTE: Under MacOS X, the “~/lib directory” that you’ll want to copy your DLed “libaacs.dylib” to may be found by right-clicking the VLC app, selecting “Show Package Contents”, and navigating to “~Contents -> MacOS -> lib”.]

This took me a little while to find the above website AND to work through a less than fully clear MacOS instructions.

Huge THANKS go to Williarob and Team Negative1 (and other project contributors) for producing such a quality preservation!

Kind regards,

I might be mistaken, but I think it’s not real AACS encryption. Deleting the AACS folder might be sufficient to getting it to load. Haven’t tested it on this exact release, but it is the case for others built this way.

BDInfo ALSO reports AACS encryption (in a scan of the BDMV folder)…

AACS QUICK SUMMARY:

Disc Title: Star_Wars_SSE_TN1_v1_6
Disc Size: 40,307,313,340 bytes
Protection: AACS
BD-Java: No
Playlist: 00001.MPLS

I am no expert in the field of AACS encryption, however, I might hazard a guess that perhaps some setting in the Blu-ray mastering software used could be the culprit? In any event, while it was a bit of a pain in the ass to find and sort out the details of a workaround…this is certainly NOT a show-stopper.

I expect that the AACS encryption was almost certainly unintentional. My intent in sharing my findings were to report the issue, share the workaround that I found, and IF a v1.6.1, v1.7, or a v2.0 are ever released…addressing the detected AACS encryption could make it into into agenda somewhere?

On behalf of myself (AND my two boys), I do REALLY, REALLY appreciate the fruits of the labors of Williarob and the rest of Team Negative1 (and contributors) for sharing this beautiful “fan preservation” with us!

Cheers!

njvc-

That is exciting news…and I very much look forward to seeing the fruits of your labors!

The one MAJOR component of your project that I still believe to be a miss is:

njvc said:

  1. 50GB Movie + Features disk
    Includes:
  • Everything listed on disk 1 and 2
  • 11 Audio Commentaries (6 of which did not fit on the 25GB disk)

The fatal flaw that I see in it is that it is terribly redundant (with the exception of the 6 additional audio commentaries…which, if I understand correctly, would not be playable via set-top due to the 8 audio track limitation) and inefficient. That’s roughly 50 EXTRA gigabytes (with little to no added value) that needs to be assembled (by you), uploaded to multiple distribution channels (by you and others), downloaded by end-users (and maintained indefinitely on private and public torrent sites by those same end-users).

Whenever Harmy releases an update to one of his DE titles (OR if you want to make some other change to either feature or BONUS content), that’s roughly 75gb (instead of 25gb) instantly outdated and will then need to go through this exact SAME distribution process each time. For a project that adds NO new content, whose PRIMARY benefits are format and organization, and that is directly tied to another project that is currently under active development this is NOT a sustainable model.

I assure you that my suggestions here (and previously in this thread) are ENTIRELY presented in an effort to try and benefit you and your efforts as well as those that would recognize and support your efforts. I absolutely believe that there is REALLY good merit in this project. IF done well, this project would clearly provide a SOLID benefit (and you have already come a good way further since your initial effort), but moving to a BD50 format for the feature portion WITHOUT a clear and practical reason for doing do is a mistake (and, even at this late stage, I still hope that you might reconsider).

Whatever your decision, I do wish you well and success in this project! It is my hope that I have successfully conveyed the substance and reasons for my suggestions by this point (…and IF you decide to stick to your guns, then so be it). As it is very clearly my wish to NOT detract from you or this project, I will now make an end.

Respectfully submitted,

-A.S.

p.s. towne32 THANK YOU for taking the time and going to the effort to try and explain things (I did understand the proposed format, I just saw an a significant issue and was simply trying to address it). I took no offense at anything you said and I hope the same was true of you. I do like to selectively use ALL CAPS to emphasize selected words or phrases (in much the same way as others might format as bold or italicize)…I know that it is kinda “quirky”, but yeah, please do read it as emphasizing that word or phrase (and definitely NOT as “shouting”).

My best to you, as well. 😉

Hey towne32!

So, let’s use some round numbers and get a little more concrete…

EACH of the current “official” release MKVs weighs in at a little under 25gb. With a few surplus audio tracks (beyond the 8 “official” audio track limit) being stripped, it’d be tight, but we should able to remux the video and selected audio from the “official” MKV to fit a BD25 (and I know the actual size limit of a BD25 is a little LESS than 25gb, but let’s just call it 25gb for simplicity).

For simplicity, let’s then say that we have roughly 15-25gb of BONUS content for EACH film. “OPTION A” that BONUS content would fit neatly onto a companion BD25 set (or possibly a single compilation BD50 disc), OR “OPTION B” it would take up roughly half of a BD50 if paired with the corresponding feature content.

The reasons why the separation of content (or “OPTION A”) is important is SIMPLICITY and DISTRIBUTION. It would be inefficient (AND confusing) to duplicate FEATURE content by adopting dual BD25 and BD50 distribution models…that’s 25 MORE gb of storage that will need to be uploaded EACH time Harmy releases a new DESPECIALIZED version. That’s 25 MORE gb that I (and others) will need to host on our computers and seedboxes in a P2P networks OR that would need to be uploaded to and THEN downloaded from other distribution resources. That’s ONE more BD50 (instead of a BD25) disc that I will need to burn with every new release IF I want to be able to watch the latest/greatest on my set-top device (and as just ONE of a few different distribution methods, ESPECIALLY for a project that is under active development, that is just a terribly inefficient distribution model).

The reasons I said:

A_New_Hope said:

What is you goal? I would suggest that the PRIMARY goal here might be to provide a working and READY-TO-GO m2ts file-set (alongside Harmy’s “official” MKV, AVCHD and DVD5 releases).

…are these:

  1. This project is what it is (currently) BECAUSE it is tied to Harmy's DESPECIALIZED EDITIONS (and they would feature the current feature release versions). With more and more people that have access to Blu-ray burners and Blu-ray players but LACK the fair amount of technical skill, time, and or equipment required to seamlessly move from MKV to Blu-ray AND neatly package it with menus, ready access to audio AND subtitle options, chapters all on a highly portable format playable on all standard set-top Blu-ray players (with NO LOSS to video or audio quality compared to the “official” MKV)…a timely released FEATURE only BD25 would absolutely be a compelling option and would be a worthy addition to the current MKV, AVCHD and DVD5 “official” release options.

  2. A GREAT treatment of BONUS content corresponding to those feature films will BEST be realized by the separation of content to help “de-clutter” the project. When removed from a BD50 size where HALF the room on the disc is taken up by the FEATURE content, opting for a (x3) BD25 model basically gives EQUAL size for BONUS content and, hell, if there were some GREAT bonus content on a few well mastered BONUS BD50 discs that’s TWICE the space.

Bottom-line, NO CONTENT (feature or BONUS) is being created here, but rather it is being assembled, streamlined and packaged. Done WELL, this would be a really GREAT benefit to the OT.com community. Not everyone loves Harmy's work…BUT, those same people could be all over a HIGH-QUALITY quality set of stand-alone BONUS Blu-ray content. Some people are JUST going to be after Harmy's latest/greatest DE release and don’t want to be stuck DLing that extra 25gb EACH time. Aside from a SMALL degree of ease-of-use in having all feature and BONUS content on a single disc, I see very little benefit to combining content ESPECIALLY as one of a few distribution options. (I, for one, would not choose it.)

I wish this project NOTHING but success! My suggestions come from experience and I present them in the sincere hope that they might serve to positively influence the course of this nascent project…and represent the end product that I would MOST like to see.

Respectfully submitted,

-A.S.

Great suggestions, I’ll give this some serious thought. At this stage, I only have access to the lossless video and audio for SW, but am hoping Harmy may be willing to share the equivalent for ESB and RotJ as well. If that happens, all of this may be doable as you suggested. It would be a significant amount of work, but is worth considering.

njvc said:

So with these new found powers, my current thinking is this. I’ll release 3 versions of each film.

  1. The Official release (BD25)
  • Will include as many audio/subtitle options as possible from Harmy’s official MKV release.
  • No special features (as disk will be filled with audio options.)
  1. The special features release (BD25)
  • Similar to my v.1, this bluray will include all of the special features previously listed, but will now include Harmy’s original video and DTS audio tracks for better picture/audio quality.
  • Will also include 32 subtitle tracks.
  1. The deluxe release (BD50)
  • Will include all of the official release audio/subtitles, and as many extra special features as possible to fit on a dual layer disk.

njvc said:

Hang tight, new and improved versions are on the way.

njvc-

So, I am afraid that the train MAY have already left the station as to the format and structure for this project (for other’s reference, my EARLIER post on the subject is here http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/944924).

Just to sum up, the crux of my suggestion was:

  1. Adopt and maintain BD25 sized feature film releases for EACH of the Harmy's DESPECIALIZED feature films (include ONLY the eight BEST “official” audio tracks identified, a current/full set of ALL Project Threepio subs, a menu with chapter marks and, space permitting, POSSIBLY trailers and the “Sources” documentary).

  2. Completely REMOVE bonus content (with the ONLY exceptions being selected “official” feature commentary tracks, and MAYBE trailers along with the “Sources” documentary)…and put EVERYTHING else either onto a matching set of three individual BD25 discs or onto a single BD50.

The reasons THIS will clearly be your BEST model has nothing to do with BD25 vs BD50 sized media…the reason is simply DISTRIBUTION, DISTRIBUTION, and DISTRIBUTION. What is you goal? I would suggest that the PRIMARY goal here might be to provide a working and READY-TO-GO m2ts file-set (alongside Harmy’s “official” MKV, AVCHD and DVD5 releases). The way that you BEST accomplish this goal is streamlining your process for remuxing Harmy's “official” MKV releases into an attractively packaged standard Blu-ray compatible, BD25 sized, m2ts file-set WITHOUT compressing or transcoding content.

AFTER re-releasing your “revised” set of feature BD25’s…PLEASE DO THEN take your time with assembling, streamlining and packaging a QUALITY set of BONUS content (it makes NO DIFFERENCE to me whether the BONUS content comes as three companion BD25’s or single combined BD50), but it is very important that it be distributed separately. Much like the feature content, my suggestion here would be that your focus be on QUALITY over quantity, if you plan to use it find the BEST available source material and bring it to your compilation BONUS Blu-ray(s) with LITTLE or NO compression or transcoding.

Kind regards,

-A.S.

THANK YOU for your efforts in bringing Harmy’s Despecialized Edition to Blu-ray in a beautiful way…

Here are a few thoughts:

  1. With an eight(8) audio track limit, I think “official” is definitely the way to go and I like your list

njvc said:

Yes. I should be able to add subtitles using multiAVCHD too. I’m thinking I’ll keep the audio options ‘official’ for the 50gb version, which would be:

English DTS 5.1 (1977 70mm mix)
English DTS 2.0 (1977 35mm mix)
English DD 2.0 (1993 Laserdisc mix)
1993 Laserdisc Audio Commentary
2004 DVD Audio Commentary
2004 starwars.com Audio Commentary
2011 Blu-ray Audio Commentary
Music-only Audio Track DD 2.0

I personally like the comedic/fan/podcast commentaries, but they will still exist on the 25gb release.

…but with clutchins suggested revision:

clutchins said:

I would probably want the mono mix over the '93 mix. Perhaps the extra commentaries and leftover audio mixes could be placed in a BD-ROM folder of some kind.

  1. As addressed (in part) above, to be successful I believe your task with this project is to thoughtfully select the BEST available versions of only the BEST content and then assemble it all together as seamlessly and with as little degradation as possible into a pretty Blu-ray package. As you’ve already identified, this means bringing unaltered, FULL res DESPECIALIZED releases (current and future) to Blu-ray format WITHOUT the need for transcoding OR compression (and I’d make the exact SAME argument for your bonus content, as well).
  1. So, with #1 and #2 being said, three(3) 50gb releases (one for each movie) is definitely one viable and good potential distribution route…but ESPECIALLY with one (and quite possibly more) revision to EACH of the DESPECIALIZED films (at BD50 sizes, that’s A LOT of bandwidth for you AND for those who might prefer your Blu-ray formatted packaging). That being said, you MIGHT do well to consider separating your main feature content from the rest of your bonus content and adopting a four(4) OR six(6) Blu-ray release model.

The benefits to adopting this approach? You could KEEP your BD25 release format for the main features (WITH your improved set of 8 “official” audio tracks…ADD the current/full set of Project Threepio subtitles) ALL at full resolution WITH your kickass menus, scene selection and whatnot. As Harmy provides us with future DESPECIALIZED releases, update the relevant BD25 feature movie disc(s) and done. (MAYBE consider including Harmy’s Sources documentary on the Star Wars Feature disc…MAYBE include the trailers to each film on their respective discs, BUT, I’d advise you to keep any BONUS content that’s NOT directly tied to the main feature all goes onto a separate disc).

Like I mentioned, having well organized and nicely packaged kickass BONUS content assembled together as seamlessly (and WITHOUT) compression would THEN begin to make a whole lot more sense (…and could totally accommodate the addition of Jamie Benning’s Star Wars Begins, Building Empire, and Returning to Jedi) as part of a 4 OR a 6 Blu-ray release model approach (IF you’re looking at roughly 50gb of COMBINED non-feature movie BONUS content, consider releasing it onto a single BD50…or if your looking at roughly 25gb, or so, of BONUS content for each film, then make ONE bonus BD25 disc per film). In EITHER case, you could always update your bonus content disc(s) as you so choose, BUT that content would no longer be directly tied to a specific DESPECIALIZED release (and that could help to save significant bandwidth AND media).

I hope that helps (and DEFINITELY looking forward to seeing the fruits of your further effort)! 😄

Kind regards,

-A.S.

p.s. There is (of course) a TON of what may considered for BONUS materials out there…again, I would advise that you include a good offering but please be mindful of QUALITY over quantity. IF you were to go for a six(6) disc model, if you can’t fit your BONUS content for each film onto it’s own BD25 without compression…then it’s probably TOO MUCH!

p.p.s. I love the Holiday Special (WITH RiffTrax commentary) as much as the next guy (AND totally commend and am excited by the restorative efforts that have been made in that direction)…BUT, I would suggest that’s a GREAT example of something that has no place on a polished DESPECIALIZED in Blu-ray format with companion BONUS disc(s).

Info Wanted: a good preservation of 'From Star Wars to Jedi, The Making of a Saga'?

So hey!

A copy of “From Star Wars To Jedi” NTSC “sourced from a mid-80’s HBO broadcast. Transferred from an old VHS tape acquired from an estate sale” was posted to the Spleen on June 14, 2015 by 6stringer (additionally, a few months ago mumbles posted to the same thread saying that he has a retail copy ALSO on VHS)…

I made a post there AND I am making this post here just to try and see if this preservation effort MIGHT (hopefully) reasonably be set back into motion? (BECAUSE that would be REALLY cool.)

Well, that’s all I’ve got for now… 😉

yeah, 50GB discs aren't exactly cheap, and Harmy's despecialized is only 13GB once you strip out the audio tracks and it's still a pleasing encode, so long as you don't starve the encode too much the quality should be fine

i mean, i'm sure you guys know what you're doing haha

Yeah, but 720p and 1080p are two different things, one needs considerably less total space to get the same relative affect on compression rates for 720p. Even on commercial Blu-ray movies, they benefit from the breathing room that 50GB provides. Yes, not everyone can burn dual-layer Blu-rays right now, and a 25GB version would have that covered, but once a 50GB version has been rendered and made available, then it would be out there safely stored in the hands of Star Wars fans where it can always be obtained by other fans one way or another. And as more people get burners that can handle dual-layer disks, they can upgrade to the best possible quality on Blu-ray. So it would be really nice if a 50GB maximum quality Blu-ray version existed, along with the smaller 25GB version. :)

Those new scans look great, love the deep blues of the Super Star Destroyer in space, such rich lush colors! :)

+1 for a "maximum quality" 50GB version (in addition to a 25GB copy)...if at all possible!  Due to clearly demonstrated limitation of their SOURCE materials, neither Harmy nor TeamBlu's projects would benefit from producing a FULL 1080p version, however, unlike these two projects the entire basis of Team Negative1's effort is producing an amazing preservation sourced from their own ORIGINAL scans of multiple copies of ORIGINAL prints.

While I am certainly NOT expecting 2K resolution (unless Team Negative1 has some extra cool tricks up their sleeves) because their source material is derived from ORIGINAL scans of ORIGINAL prints, wouldn't there much more clearly visible difference in using FULL 1080p resolution and higher bit-rates vs. 720p resolution and/or considerably lower bit rates (to fit onto a 25GB Blu-ray)?

With ALL the effort that is going into this project AND the potential for a visible improvement in opting for a higher resolution/bit rate preservation...it would just make sense to me that 50GB might potentially make for a better "line in the sand"?  (In any event, that's just my $0.02 on the subject.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH Team Negative1 for your truly AMAZING restorative work in preserving what is quite arguably the GREATEST trilogy to ever grace the silver screen! :D

-A.S.

p.s. My external dual-layer capable BD burner cost me just over $100 (WITH some added goodies) and BD50 discs run me $3 each (and are 100% guaranteed or they are replaced FREE of charge)...in short, certainly not all THAT expensive.
