***The "Dr. Gonzo" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread***
This Info/Feedback thread is all about the "Dr. Gonzo" Original Trilogy Set.

This set seems to be the most "complete" Definitive Collection Set YET the set has REALLY awesome menus for all four discs and the films include

INFO FROM Dr. Gonzo!

The player was a Pioneer CLD-990. I used a Sony DVMC-DA2 for Analogue to DV conversion. TMPGEnc was used for IVTC and MPEG-2 encoding. Sonic Scenarist was used for AC3 encoding and authoring. Menus done in Photoshop (of course). Easter Eggs: ANH - Blink182: A New Hope, ESB - Twin Sister: Scoundrel, ROTJ - CreativEngine: Darth Maul (He's My Friend and All). That's about all I can remember off the top of my head. It's been a long time ago now and a project that I originally intended for myself and some friends & family has grown to be common on the 'net. Pretty weird.

What has 'theology' ever said that is of the smallest use to anybody? When has 'theology' ever said anything that is demonstrably true and is not obvious? What makes you think that 'theology' is a subject at all? - Richard Dawkins

You didn't mention the easter eggs.

There is an easter egg on each of the main menus of the three movie discs (not sure about the bonus disc as I don't have it). If you scroll over to the left there is a little vader-shaped button that when selected plays a song. I can't remember what the songs are right now. Someone help me out here.

On ESB it's "Scoundrel" by Nerf Herder.

ANH's Easter egg is "A New Hope" by Blink 182

However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

Just stuck in my ROTJ Dr. Gonzo DVDr and the easter egg song is "Darth Maul: He's My Friend and All" by Creative Engine

This song is really funny.

Dammit, I haven't checked out these easter eggs yet and now I really want to hear this Darth Maul song, but I'm at work and my dvds are at home

The only error on this set is transfered straight from the source; the missing welding footage. The video is DAMN close to, and occassionaly arguably superior to, the "TR47" set, though it has some softer, muddier moments as well. The audio has been compressed, and looses a TINY amount of punch because of it. All in all though, a perfectly acceptable choice, I think, and the commentary helps make a strong case for getting this set.

It was the first rip I downloaded; since I've also downloaded the "Quality Broth" version of ROTJ.

I made AVIs of it, they went around a bit too, at a little above my normal encoding level they came out all under 700 MB, which is odd. I think it's that "softness" making it more compressible.

My preferred LD capture of choice. The commentaries, the color fidelity, the extras discs. (the set I got included 2 extra discs that had The Making of Star Wars, SPFX: The Making of Empire Strikes Back, From Star Wars to Jedi, and The Creatures of ROTJ) Hell, it's even got easter eggs. The Menus are pretty impressive, as well.

This capture is about 3 years old, too, and yet it still stands up. I find the picture to be better than the TR47 boot, mostly because of the color fidelity and the fact it's Anamorphic (I appreciate that since i have a 16x9 display) . It's a little softer in some spots, yeah, but those moments are few and far between.

Between this and the boot set I have with isolated score and original crawl on ANH, this is about all the original trilogy bootleg I need...

...until Zion's gets finished, of course

This was my 1st OT set - and still my favourite too, probably because of the presentation within the discs and the fact that they are anamorphic.

Although a lot of ther people tell me that the TR47 set has a better pic and sound, but for me the difference is negligable - though I don't really have the ear or eye to notice these things that much.

Kudos to Dr Gonzo - this is some piece of work he did on this set.

For those who haven't put it together, Dr. Gonzo is Benecio del Toros character from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

More info:
Encoding Process: Laserdiscs originally captured with Sony DV cam as DV bridge
at 720x480, video encoded to DVD-spec and IVTC'd with TMPGenc, audio ac3 (Dolby
2.0) encoded with Sonic ReelDVD.

An excellent set, only 2 minor things that bug me; one is that the surround flag is not set in the audio, so I get plain stereo instead of Dolby Surround unless I manually alter my audio system, another is that it seems to me towards the end of ANH the picture starts to shake from side to side quite noticeably. Anyone else notice this?

"Encoding Process: Laserdiscs originally captured with Sony DV cam"

I used to capture like this - you get better video quality with a real capture card.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They're certainly beyond any repair you're capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren't one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can't say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won't suck as much as a fan edit.

I would like to get this set, is it in torrent form for download somewhere or anyway to get them?

I have surfed thru suprnova but cannot determine if any of the torrents are the DrGonzo version...

thanks

It's against the rules of this forum to post torrent files, however if you use torrentspy to check the file information in the torrents you get from suprnova, the directory structure will say something like DRG_ANH (i.e. DrGonzo - A New Hope).

:: Edit - OK, I've just had a look, and it's not that simple to identify the correct torrent. Maybe someone else could help this guy out?

Hi! THought I'd chime in with the real specs on this.

Pretty weird.

The new transfers are really looking outstanding and I'm very impressed with Zion's work. Amazing menus and some nice looking colors and clarity off of the "Faces" LD's.

Wow! Welcome to the OT Forum Doc Gonzo!

Hope you stick around, but I just wanted to let you how much myself and others have really enjoyed your work. While you intended it for your private use I hope you don't mind that it's found its way here. The great work people are doing here now are one way or another very much inspired by your terrific efforts.

Thanks again!

Glad to be here. I'm sure I'll pop in and out now and again.

I've got no problem with people trading my versions. Hey, the more the merrier. But like I said - there's some really great looking work going on in here. Neat!
