Beyond the OT Documentaries/Making-Ofs (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds)

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Since people really liked the YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds for Original Trilogy making-ofs, documentaries, promos, etc. & General Star Wars Documentaries (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds) threads and have been sharing lots of interesting videos there, I figured it made sense to start a similar thread dedicated to the Prequel Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, Anthology films, and the various animated & live action TV series, etc.

POSTING GUIDELINES:

  • When adding a link to a video, please add a title and/or description so that we don’t have to click on it to find out what it is. Any additional info would be appreciated as well, like f.ex. an IMDB page link, article links, or just a simple blurb. You can also add a photo; screenshot, poster, or simply add the YouTube thumbnail (like this). Alternatively, just PM me with the video link and I’ll send you the image link.
  • Fan-made videos qualify provided they are of reasonably good quality.
  • Shorter featurettes and other BTS material also qualifies for this thread. However, if you wish to post a large collection of shorter featurettes then please share it as a playlist or at least keep the links confined to a single post so as to not clutter up the thread.
  • No reviews or opinion-pieces.
  • No mockumentaries.
  • This thread is specifically for post-OT movies and/or series, so please don’t post anything primarily dealing with ANH, ESB or ROTJ even if it also covers elements from the later films or series. Some documentaries do of course cover several eras or aspects of Star Wars, so it’s fine if the OT is mentioned in the video provided the focus is on one or several of post-OT films or series.

For other Beyond the OT content there is also the The Beyond the OT Trailers/Promos Thread and the The Random YouTube, Vimeo etc. video finds thread for Beyond the OT

For a more in-depth list of where to find all Star Wars documentaries, making-ofs, etc. and where to find them there is Rodney-2187’s Guide to Star Wars Documentaries and Special Features thread.

I figured the appropriate place to start would be at the “beginning” as far as all things beyond the OT is concerned:

The Beginning: Making Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da8s9m4zEpo&list=PLYn2a0e2FVIKni_wHXR5CJYBnnnYH7mIB&index=141&t - from the official Star Wars YouTube channel (1 hour, 6 mins long).

The blurb:-
“The Beginning is a documentary on the making of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, originally produced for the film’s DVD release. It covers the entire production of The Phantom Menace, from preproduction to casting to visual effects, editing, and theatrical release.”

IMDB Page

^ This is honestly one of the most interesting and in-depth making-ofs I’ve ever seen, and regardless of what you may think of TPM as a movie, I’d still highly recommend this documentary.

Really cool to see how they blended CG with a puppet Maz for TROS, and the forced perspective sandcrawler at the end was a really neat “old school” trick. As much as I enjoy these vfx breakdowns I wish these official YT channels would do more videos like this that’s more focused on the practical stuff, though I’m glad to see that they’re starting to mention it instead of brushing past it like they often do in videos like this.

I’ve been waiting for this!

Man, the BTS footage is…confusing to look at!
I hope that, in the future, they’ll release another video breaking down a single scene or shot and how they achieve it.

Hopefully, as other shows and movies start using it, they’ll probably have to go into more details for the “general” public, especially when they’ll have to start teaching film students about it, etc.

They do illustrate fairly well at 0:33 how it works. From what I’ve gathered the camera is in contact with the computer(s) rendering the game-engine so that it can move around without revealing a 2D image (which happend with a lot of backdrops in old movies), but what I’m still unsure about is how the camera knows where it is located on the real set. I would assume this tech (for now at least) only works with certain digital cameras.

I’ve seen videos where they had one screen doing this, but when you wrap it around a whole set then it becomes complicated. I honestly had never in guessed that they’d used this technology for interiors, I assumed it was only for shots like the one with Mando and the child with the sunset in the background mentioned in the video, or f.ex. in ep. 1 when Mando and Quiil leans down on a ridge and sees the camp down in the valley. It’s really strange to see Herzog’s office just vanish and turn into a white wall (gave me a TNG holodeck vibe).

Yeah, and although I hope people don’t become too dependent on this technology in the future, I can definitely see the benefit of a “10 hour sunset”, not to mention that they’ll never/rarely have to add fake light interaction between actors/props and fake environments something which has plagued CG-filled films (the PT being a solid example of this), or even pre-CG VFX-filled films for that matter.
