WatchingTheAerial's disingenuous video about how " 35MM scans lie to you "
Time

Yeah, the video title is a type of clickbaity / algorithm-friendly one all to familiar of late on youtube.

Many good and agreeable points are made in the 15 minute video - yet I do have the feeling he was approaching the subject as a ‘gotcha’ at fan preservationists - rather than presenting a balanced essay on the topic. That’s a pity - but it is just one person’s opinion… and that of someone who has seemingly struggled in doing their research and in portraying much equilibrium. (The other attempt at a ‘gotcha’ by the video maker certainly backfired when reading VennyRestore’s comments on that particular topic.)

For me, the claim that print scans are “lies” is… inane to the point of being disingenuous. Followed by the lip-service at the end of the video is an all too familiar cop out (and a poor attempt at a disclaimer).

Agreed with your, tamir, bilditup1, and VennyRestore’s posts in the comment section of the video (still making my way through others).

Dek Rollins nailed it on the head for me in his post in the video comments section…

The issue with the Se7en 35mm scan comparisons is that this scan was actually calibrated, but the version of the scan in your video, that people are using as a reference point against the new UHD, is a regrade and doesn’t represent the actual calibrated scan. The print that was scanned is darker for one thing. Now the UHD still doesn’t look like the calibrated print scan, but the comparison is itself flawed because of what you discussed in the second half of the video. Many of the scans that get out in the wild are graded entirely to one person’s apparent preferences. But there are also many scans that use some sort of proper calibration.

I disagree with the premise that print scans are always “lying” and that directors/cinematographers should be trusted to be telling the truth in this regard. Subjectivity to some extent will always come into play when color correcting something, but calibrated print scans (of low-fade/unfaded prints) can at least reveal when an official remaster is way off base, by providing a ball park estimate of what the projected prints looked like.

Does the 2K scan of Star wars from 1997 still exist?
Time

That guy with no name said:

In 1997, as part of the restoration, the newly assembled negative was scanned and digitally restored in 2k. does this mean that there is currently a 2k file of the original film(s) sitting in lucasfilm archive?

Yeah, and it is probably still sitting there - a pity it was never used for a 25th anniversary release for the 1997 SE (such a pity that the 1997 Special Edition has never had a digital home format release - other than on the awful VCD format) - despite them having ‘a perfect print’ all ready to go.

^ doubleofive is probably the guy for more info on that (amongst other far more knowledgeable souls than me on here).

There is a fair bit of information on the 1997 Special Editions, here:-

desertfox’s 2006 GOUT DVD - VEAI Enhanced 1080p Upscale (Released)

^ posted with kind permission by desertfox on TSWT…

The following Project Description is taken from TSWT…

'Here are my 1080p Full HD encodes of NTSC GOUT for all 3 movies of Original SW Trilogy.

Movies first appeared on 2006 and 2008 Limited Edition DVD sets. No correction has been done to the pictures regarding gamma, contrast, brightness and saturation. Also, no additional audio tracks or subtitles were added.

I only applied simple video enhancement using AI which gave the picture more details, especially faces, hair. It generated some sharpness, clarity and removed artificial static noise/grain so I find it to be now more eye pleasing.

As with any other AI, the artifacts are introduced in a form of fine vertical textures and you can see most of it in the first two movies.

ROTJ almost doesn’t have any artifacts.

Each movie is around 4 or 5gb in size.

Screenshots for each movie are provided’.

Star Wars: 4.4gb - an mp4 file.
Empire Strikes Back: 3.7gb - an mp4 file.
Return Of The Jedi: 4.7gb - an mp4 file.

Screenshots…

Available via 📍 A few available Original Trilogy Preservations - from a long time ago . . . . 📍 - or on the TSWT forum.

All credit and kudos to desertfox for a quality 1090p VEAI upscale project for the 2006 GOUT DVDs.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Returns to Theaters(at the official Star Wars website):-

Episode III will play in select cinemas for a limited time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film’s debut.

a snippet…

'Anakin Skywalker is about to bring peace, freedom, justice, and security to his new Empire on the big screen.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the final film in the prequel trilogy, Episode III will be re-released in theaters on April 25, 2025, running in select U.S. theaters and international territories for one week only. Screenings will be available in several formats, including, for the first time, 4DX. From the exhilarating battles over the planet of Coruscant to the fiery volcanic high grounds of Mustafar, relive this pivotal chapter in the Skywalker saga; the 4DX experience features high-tech motion chairs that sync with over 21 effects, all designed to complement the narrative of the film.’

This isn’t too surprising considering they’ve done this for the previous 2 Prequel films (I think? Maybe nobody bothered with AOTC? TPM definitely did get a limited theatrical re-release) - and also shown the 2011SE / 2019SE cuts of the OT for the 40th anniversaries. Though good news for the ROTS fans among us.

Personally, I was hoping Andor season 2 was somehow going to be shown on the big screen - even if it did mean going to the cinema every week for four weeks - a bit like the old days when cinemas had an assortment of new, good and intriguing films to show.

Kathleen Kennedy
Time

Lucasfilm Boss Kathleen Kennedy Expected to Retire This Year’:-

www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/star-wars-kathleen-kennedy-lucasfilm-1235282440

'After more than a decade in a galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy is charting a course toward retirement. The Lucasfilm boss has told associates she plans to retire by the end of 2025, Puck reported Monday night.

Reps for Kennedy and Lucasfilm were not immediately available for comment.

Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside Star Wars creator George Lucas, and a few months later took the reins after Disney paid $4 billion for the company and Lucas exited.

She relaunched the franchise, beginning with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), which grossed more than $2 billion globally and reinvigorated the property as a big screen brand. Disney released a Star Wars film every year from 2015-2019 and then took a pause following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which received a mixed response and earned just half of what Force Awakens had brought in just a few years earlier.

As Lucasfilm boss, Kennedy held one of the most visible and scrutinized jobs in Hollywood, and it was not always smooth sailing. She fired Chris Lord and Phil Miller as directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story in the middle of production. (The film went on to be the first Star Wars movie to lose money theatrically.) She also sidelined Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards, replacing him with Tony Gilroy, who was brought on to oversee reshoots. (The film became a $1 billion hit). Other projects were promised that never materialized, such as Rian Johnson’s trilogy, and another one overseen by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Benioff and David Weiss. Daisy Ridley’s upcoming return to Star Wars has been languishing in development since being announced to fanfare almost two years ago.

But even as Star Wars struggled to return to the big screen, the franchise found newfound life on Disney+, with The Mandalorian launching in November 2019 along with the streaming service. It became a breakout hit, spawning multiple spinoffs, including the critically acclaimed Andor, which returns for a second season in April, as well multiple shows that failed to hit the zeitgeist and sparked worries of diluting the Star Wars brand.

Coming up, Lucasfilm has The Mandalorian and Grogu from director Jon Favreau due out May 22, 2026 as the first big screen outing for the franchise since Rise of Skywalker.

Kennedy’s storied career includes work with Steven Spielberg and husband Frank Marshall, with collaborations including Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Gremlins (1984), The Color Purple (1985), The Goonies (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990) and the Indiana Jones films, which concluded with last year’s Dial of Destiny. In all, she has produced or executive produced more than 70 films and been nominated for eight Oscars.

The news comes ahead of April’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where the future of the Star Wars franchise is expected to be unveiled.’

A thousand toxic politicised click-bait youtube channels rejoice in the fact after 10 years… they’re finally correct in claiming Kennedy will leave Lucasfilm… and will be shortly putting up new content (including thumbnails of Kathleen Kennedy with red laser eyes) to let everyone know they were ‘right’ all along. 😉

Serious-wise… an interesting line at the end of the article where it states 'April’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where the future of the Star Wars franchise is expected to be unveiled.'…

27th February Edit: the above article from The Hollywood Reporter - and Puck - was incorrect (once again)

Kathleen Kennedy Speaks On Her Lucasfilm Plans — She Is Not Soon Retiring — & The Films That Will Keep Her In ‘Star Wars’ Orbit For Years To Come - a sit-down interview with Kathleen Kennedy herself, at Deadline.

Kathleen Kennedy…

“The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring. What’s happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob and Alan about what eventual succession might look like. We have an amazing bench of people here, and we have every intention of making an announcement months or a year down the road. We are in lockstep as to what that’s going to be, and I am continuing. I’m producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I’m also producing Shawn Levy’s movie, which is after that. So I’m continuing to stay at Lucasfilm and looking very thoughtfully with Bob and Alan as to who’s stepping in. So that is all underway, and we have every right to make that announcement when we want to make it.”

The whole Deadline interview linked above is well worth a read.

I think still having to argue with people over why the original should be on Blu-Ray and 4K and Han why Han shooting second is stupid, 20 years after we signed a petition to the get the original released just to get Lynn Hale’s spiel, kind of makes me think it’s a lost cause.

I have 4K77 and I’m reasonably happy with it.

It won’t be lost because the British Film Archive and Library of Congress have the original. Its just not available to the general public. Unless you have out of print DVD, VHS or laserdisc. Yeah none of those is theatrically accurate but whatever.

Does that mean that the original negatives are archived in a place where they are available for scanning at any time today? From what source do you get this information? It is really very interesting

Not negatives no, but LOC do have 35mm prints they have scanned and archived. I’m almost 100% certain BFI has done the same. But I don’t have some inside knowledge.

Lucasfilm has the negatives, and it is true that the O-neg is conformed to the 1997 edit. But they saved all the trims. What is lost is the original color reversal negative, all the wipes and dissolves. Anyone who says they can’t do a restoration is being foolish. It’s not about the money, it’s not about can it be done. It is all about George, he hates the original and does not want it restored.

This has never been confirmed, some say that George tossed those trimmings. Why would he keep them?

It has indeed been confirmed, mate. Back in 2017…

‘20th Century Fox’s Senior Vice President of Library and Technical Services, Shawn Belston, confirmed that all of the “trims” removed from the original cut negative (in the mid-1990s, to create the SEs) still exist as well.’

<em><strong>ANDOR</strong></em> - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread
Time

First Andor A Star Wars Story Teaser Trailer and Poster Revealed’ - at StarWars•com…

Creator Tony Gilroy weighs in on Season 2 of the series starring Diego Luna amid the journey to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

'The first trailer for Andor Season 2 exploded onto the scene today, with a glimpse at the birth of the Rebel Alliance as we know it. Ahead of the long-awaited season premiere on April 22, 2025, the trailer reunites us with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona), Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), and Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) from the critically-acclaimed and Emmy-nominated first season of the Disney+ series, as well as key characters from the fan-favorite standalone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, like K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), and Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).

Creator and executive producer Tony Gilroy has shared that this season will follow Cassian’s journey in the four years leading up to the events of Rogue One, with the 12 episode story unfolding in four weekly chapters of three episodes each.

While Season 1 followed Cassian’s reluctant journey from cynical nobody to revolutionary volunteer, the long-awaited conclusion in Andor Season 2 will see the characters and their relationships intensify as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound.

Rife with political intrigue, danger, tension, and high stakes, the thrill is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which portrayed a heroic band of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction — the Death Star — setting the stage for the events of the original 1977 film, Star Wars: A New Hope. Andor sets the clock back five years from the events of Rogue One to tell the story of the film’s hero, Cassian Andor, and his transformation into a rebel hero on his way to an epic destiny.

x

The 95 second Season 2 trailer for Andor at the official Star Wars youtube channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE4wxt70aUM

“One of the great thrills of making Andor is the scale of the story and the number of characters we’re able to meet — ordinary people, Imperial overlords, passionate revolutionaries,” Gilroy says. “They are real people making epic decisions, all of them staring down questions with terrifying consequences. Cassian’s journey is the soul and spine of our story, but it’s the choir that makes the show. I’m so excited for audiences to see where we go in Season 2.”

In addition to the trailer — a tense cacophony of blaster fire and explosions punctuated by Eedy Karn’s laughter — new key art hints at Cassian’s transformation into the leader and captain who will succeed in the mission to steal the Death Star plans on Scarif, with a poster that pays homage to the Rogue One campaign.

“Remember this moment,” Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera can be heard intoning at the trailer’s end. “You’re here. You’re right here and you’re ready to fight.”

Andor Season 2 stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, Elizabeth Dulau, and Alan Tudyk, with Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker. Why not simply send a PM to CMGF as they have stated in the OP of the thread?:-

and I can send you direct download links in PM.

Hope you all enjoy!

In general, simply sending a PM to the project creator (unless asked otherwise) is the default way of asking for fan projects on here…

YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds

'Star Wars 4 (1994) - ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER Trailer’

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nizfPamAyew - a 3 minute AI video from the Ryan Lightbourn youtube channel.

The blurb: ‘Created using Hunyuan Video, Hailuo Minimax, SDXL 1.0, Flux .1 Dev, SwarmUI, Grok2.’.

^ Both awful and good all at the same time; with definite 80’s/90’s retro vibe… and some silly daft fun - with 90’s video-game styled violence.

Would also love to know how to get these. I asked on the forum, but it seems to have been deleted now. They linked me to the wrong version, that I wasn’t after and I can’t even see links on there anyway. 😦 I can’t believe how difficult these are to find. Been looking for a couple of months.

I guess that’s a good thing, in some ways…

D+77, D+80 and OTD83 are what I’m looking for.

All 3 projects are also available, along with a number of other OT fan projects over the years, in here…

📍 A few available Original Trilogy Preservations - from a long time ago . . . . 📍

Also this may be of interest - and well worth a read through for anyone wanting to obtain fan projects in general on here…

Why not just send a DM (aka a PM) as EPho3nix has requested? (and which is the actual correct way to ask for a project on here)

There is no need to post ‘link requests’ for such a project…

James Bond 007 Thread
Time

James Bond’s long-serving producers give control to Amazon’:-

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1mn9gz5x3mo

'The James Bond film franchise will no longer be controlled by the Broccoli dynasty, after long-serving masterminds Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson announced they are stepping down.

The Bond films were launched by Albert “Cubby” Broccoli in 1962, before his daughter and stepson took over.

The pair will now give creative control to Amazon MGM Studios, which was formed when Amazon bought Bond’s parent studio in 2022.

The new deal comes after mounting speculation about the fate of the British spy, four years after his last outing in No Time to Die, which was also Daniel Craig’s final appearance in the role.

'Cubby Broccoli launched the iconic franchise with co-producer Harry Saltzman, and was joined by Wilson as a producing partner for 1985’s A View to a Kill.

Barbara took over from her father to join Wilson as a producer for 1995’s GoldenEye, and the pair have overseen every Bond film since through their Eon production house.

They kept tight control of the character - something that was acknowledged by Craig when he presented them with honorary Oscars in November, external. “Over the years many people and organisations have tried to put their own footprint on Bond,” he said.

“Barbara, Michael, I can’t tell you how much I admire your integrity in holding on to your singular vision as you brought Bond into the 21st Century with a passionate and a protective determination to honour the heart of this franchise.”’

As others have said online… hopefully there won’t now be a version of ‘The World Is Not Enough’ - where Elliot Carver is now the hero. Bezos as Blofeld, or ‘A View To A Shill’…

No remakes of 1979’s Moonraker either - where the villain is a super-rich industrialist and supposed rocket-maker seeking to go to space and cause chaos on Earth because… he’s a power-hungry oligarch and secret Nazi. Far-fetched or what?!

Hopefully the project threads will soon get back to being discussions about the actual projects themselves - queries, feedback, reviews, exchange of ideas, suggestions for future versions etc - and not be full of endless & unnecessary ‘link request’ posts.

Have the Disney+ versions of the OT been released on DVD in North America?
Time

Deemster said:

I’m glad this topic exists, or else I wouldn’t have known that the 2019 remasters would be on DVD. I bought that whole “Skywalker Saga” DVD box set for a very cheap price, and to my delight these are indeed the “Maclunkey versions”. Yeah, there are indeed a lot of stupid changes, but having the films with the 2019 color grading on legit DVD does excite me. Better than any official Star Wars DVD has ever looked in terms of color, GOUT included.

Now I am wondering… Were those 2011 remasters (Those first Blu-Ray releases that added the rock in front of R2D2 and Vader screaming “Nooooooo” etc) ever printed on official DVD too? I read somewhere that in 2013 new DVDs were released, but I can’t confirm if they are just the old early 2000s masters or those newer 2011 versions. Does anyone know this?

The 2013 DVDs were indeed the 2011 Special Edition version (the same as the 2011 blu ray release).

The ever-informed Nathan Butler gives a 12 minute low down of those releases here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoyvfljGaiU

^ although the above video is focused on the 2013 UK releases… it does also feature info on the 2013 US blu ray / DVD combo pack.
