Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread

Author

 (Edited)

Now that there is a dedicated ‘Original Trilogy Discussion’ forum on the site, and the General Star Wars Random Thoughts thread is in the ‘General Star Wars Discussion’ section, some of us on here thought it may be a neat idea to have new ‘General Random Thoughts’ threads focusing on each of the three Original Trilogy films.

Plus another thread for ‘General Random Original Trilogy Thoughts’.

In other words… a few threads for some light discussion of these much loved, iconic and ground-breaking films.

And so:-

Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread

The Empire Strikes Back - a general Random Thoughts thread

Return Of The Jedi - a general Random Thoughts thread

The Original Trilogy - a general Random Thoughts thread

Yeah, I don’t imagine anyone has much left to say about the individual OT films to make a separate thread for each viable.

Hey, I won £5. That was easy 😃

I imagine the idea of creating these threads were for newer and future members to also contribute in them too - as well for anyone to just post and engage in conversation with about these films.

Having a thread for each of the three classic films to ramble away in… seems a decent idea for a site that was built on getting an official release of / preserving said films - and there is now a dedicated discussion section for.

Yes, a lot has already been posted in the old General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread - which also contains some content from Star Wars releases that may not interest members who don’t like certain other aspects of the GFFA.

These are just for each of the Original Trilogy movies…

Given the current organization of the site, sure this makes sense. But wasn’t it easier when there were fewer sub forums and we could just have fun in the random thoughts thread? I forgot it even existed until now!

You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done 😉

There are only two extra sub-forums on here since the re-organisation; giving the site a much-requested dedicated ‘Original Trilogy Discussion’ section in the process.

Apart from having this ‘Original Trilogy Discussion’ forum, and a forum for ‘Beyond the Original Trilogy’… everything else is pretty much where it was before - in the ‘General Star Wars Discussion’ section.

(And there is no way I’m going through and moving around 5000+ threads again - one by one… into their relevant site sections and then re-sorting & updating the various Index Threads etc 😃)

Pretty much what oojason said is why we created these threads.

And maybe also an attempt, or a reminder, that the site isn’t just for endlessly yammering on about the Sequel films, and the repetitiveness, negativity and toxicity that comes with it at times - which has seemed to be the focus on conversations on here over the last couple of years.

Thankfully, there doesn’t seem to be much of that in this part of the forum!

Maybe we can start talking about the 1977 Star Wars film in here, now?

And enjoy ourselves doing so… 😃

I saw Star Wars in 1977 - I was 8 years old and remember it vividly.

Perhaps I remember it so starkly because I had to fight for it! I’d seen the trailer/ads on TV, all of my school friends were talking about it, and somehow I just knew this movie was for me.

So I got home from school one afternoon and my hippie stepmother said casually “we saw Star Wars today! It was great!”. I was like “uh…okay”. “Oh yeah” said Dad through a haze of marijuana smoke “it was fantastic” - and they regaled me with tales of giant spaceships passing overhead and princesses and glorious space battles…

Finally I - the target audience for this damn film - mustered the courage to enquire as to whether perhaps I might get a shot at seeing this thing.

“Alright alright” said Dad, visibly annoyed, “I’ll take you to Star Wars!”. We went some days later, but of course it felt like an eternity to me! We left in the morning but Dad (he was in the music biz) wanted to check out some recording studios that were being built. We finally arrived at the cinema at 5pm after a day of walking around empty building sites. Dad paused in front of the row of movie posters on the cinema wall. The movie was starting in five minutes and we still didn’t have tickets. I knew something was up.

“I’ve already seen Star Wars” my father moaned, “let’s see Close Encounters!”.

Cue Omen theme with me as young Damien!

No, in truth I basically begged “please, please, please can I see Star Wars!”.

The great man relented with an exasperated sigh, and I had the time of my life. It was wonderful - magical. The Force was with me.

Later Dad gave me a lecture on how I hadn’t considered that dying Stormtroopers might have had families…but that’s another story…

How do you pronounce Tantive IV?
I’ve always said “Tant-ev Four” but apparently it’s supposed to be “Tan-tee-vee Four”???

Also, I love having individual film threads as well as a Trilogy thread.
I think each film deserves it’s own topic & it makes my Aquarian need for over-organization happy.
As do the matching header images! More of that, future thread makers!

Tant-iv Four (like “is” or “if”), and anyone who says different is wrong. 😉

I saw Annie Hall was on amazon Prime so I thought I’d give it a watch. This dreck beat Star Wars as best picture in 1977? WTF!?

It was so awful I couldn’t finish it. Turned it off after about 20 or 30 mins. And that was being generous. I wanted to stop after about 10 mins but tried to give it the benefit of the doubt.

But geez. It’s basically a pathetic, miserable man being pathetic and miserable and making everyone around him miserable too. What was wrong with people that they would vote for this trash over Star Wars?

Can’t agree with that.

Annie Hall is a surefire classic.

I’ve seen maybe 15-20 minutes of Annie Hall, and I’d still place it above Star Wars.

Or would I?

Author

What am I missing that everyone thinks Annie Hall is so great? It was just whiny and pedantic and miserable at every turn. I just don’t see the appeal. I’ve never really paid any attention to Woody Allen, but if this is his typical brand of comedy it clearly isn’t for me.

Author

People who read submitted stories for consideration usually dump stories that don’t imediately grab their attention. If the writer can’t grab the reader in the first 10 minutes, it is a fail. But when you get an established writer that kind of goes out the window. By then Woody Allen was a big deal and could make the movies he wanted. Some people love his work. Some hate it. But by 1977 when he did Annie Hall, he could basically do what he wanted. So if you really want to know why it won over Star Wars, you have to watch the entire film, no matter how much you hate it. The thing that is true about his movies (which used to star him and now feature someone less annoying in a similar role) is that they are all the same in some ways. The ones he’s made more recently (that he is not in) are far better than his 70’s and 80’s films.

But the real reason Star Wars did not win is because of its genre. Whether you call it science fiction, fantasy, science fantasy, or space adventure, it is not a genre that has ever won an academy award for best picture. The fact it was nominated was incredible. The academy doesn’t usually take films like that seriously.

@ray-afraid: please. Life is too short to waste my time forcing myself to watch something that is abundantly clear I don’t enjoy at all. The amount I watched was more than enough to inform me what the film was like and whether I’d enjoy watching it or not.

@yotsuya: first, thanks for understanding and not rushing to judgement just because I don’t share a common opinion. Second, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. I guess the academy has always been a bunch of stuffy, out of touch buffoons. I never have understood why people put so much stock in those awards ceremonies…

Not only its genre, but Star Wars was a lot more juvenile and simplistic than a lot of popular cinema in the '70s. The lack of cynicism resonated with audiences, but no-fun-allowed critics didn’t like it because it wasn’t that deep. I haven’t seen Annie Hall yet, nor have I gotten around to seeing any of Woody Allen’s films, but I have a feeling his work had more thematic depth, which the academy would obviously gravitate towards.

Another reason why some of the changes made for the 1997 Special Editions make no sense; especially for Star Wars…

The Death Star has a clear line of fire for the Rebel Base on Yavin IV (which was added into the scene for the 1997 SE) - even before the Rebels begin their attack:-
