I would be guarded about the bleached out engine details on the Star Destroyer.

In the original footage the engine details were obscured by engines in motion but the way the model has been presented here the engines look like more white discs which reduces some of the impact.

Say goodbye, to all this and "hello" to Jason Issacs.

I know Bingo.....I'm not 100% happy with the way I've used that CG model, gonna re-structure how I did that shot.......the main thing I'm striving to do is not having things being obviously CG....Gonna think....

Angel's suggestions should work.

What is your renderer?

Did you try to combine two or 3 renders with different settings together to take a nice result in compositing?

Your deathstar looks a bit flat. You can cheat a bit by adding a slight motion of turning. more patrolling star destroyers like the one you added is a must if you want to tone up/guide the eye to what points you want to show.

This is a nice article you can look and take ideas of the basics but masterful done subconsciously language of a successful done shot.

No Angel, thats just 1 pass including multiple light sources, shadows set to hard, rendered with motion blur & engine lights pointing directly at camera with lens flare......I'll try it again but in multiple passes & as you say render in 2k then down res it for project, the Death Star is still....& planet does pan slightly, so perhaps a slow scale for Death Star.

Any ideas of anything more menacing than a needle for the Torture Droid, perhaps a dentist tool

Motion blur is good.

engine lights pointing directly at camera with lens flare

Star wars doesnt have so many lens flares in space in OT apart is an optical bug from the lenses. You added a starglow effect in the engines which is good (ANH is full of that cross lens shit all the time)

I'll try it again but in multiple passes & as you say render in 2k then down res it for project

Try that but not limited to. The up rez solution will give you some valuable film artifacts and a less clean rendered look. V ray is a nice option but even a scanline render with the proper settings can be used as a nice base

This image might help you of some useful artifacts that you need if you want to break some of the CG looks.

(most of the errors i see are when they just scale down detailed elements into a simpler environment. They havent have the same density of detailing and the damn simple blur cant do the justice :)

, the Death Star is still....& planet does pan slightly, so perhaps a slow scale for Death Star.

The deathstar even in the closeups in ANH shows some turning curvature that adds a bit more life to the shot

Any ideas of anything more menacing than a needle for the Torture Droid, perhaps a dentist tool

The only thing that comes to my mind is to stabilize the probe while entering the prison room. So fake and bubbling

That looks good.

Naturally Leia doesn't get drilled into unless she heals differently so you could add a red laser effect to the end of it and map a laser mark on Leia's head just before the door shuts (like in those sniper scenes in films kids watch these days).

The lens could do with adjustment. It looks too dark to sit the rest of the head, I'd try lowering the contrast on the whole area a little and see if that helps.

Perhaps a slight de-saturation of the in lens colours would blend the element in more too.

It will be a real bugger replacing every shot with Artoo's lens in shot (best of luck).

That I think is the only time in the saga you can clearly see that they replaced his normal lens with some sort of light defuser (paper or gauze) to make it glow right.

No need to replace any other shot

I ve noticed that when you slow down vader's voice and pitch down his voice he sounds even more close to his ESB performance. Playing with the equalizer you can make his voice deeper while removing the fast breathing that he has in ANH with the deeper and slower from ESB.

You did a bold move removing some of the bad lines of vader in ANH (sense something etc) which i agree making him more mysterious and more close to him self.

The millennium falcon enters way to boring into the hangar. a well placed angle is more interesting.

Great! im eager to see every video you will make altering vader or any other part that looks off! If you need me let me know :)

Everything that makes that film altered and unrecognizable is welcome :D

I know I'm a bit late but it sounds like a fantastic plan! In fact, it seems somewhat reminiscent of this thing. However, the more edits of ANH the merrier. It's a film that, to me, is so memorable that it's always great to see it have a new look, even with the most minor adjustments...

Jae will you be keeping the order of that scene in ANH where Luke speaks with Obi-wan or switching it back around to how it is in the original?

Also, will you just be scrapping that Jabba scene or perhaps trying to work some magic with it?

I've always wondered if that scene could be improved by changing the location/background and some of the background characters. Perhaps altering the dialogue so it's not as repetitive as in the Greedo scene would also help. I realize though it would likely be easier to just scrap it.

I know in the past I've done quick mock-ups of what I'm suggesting. I'll see if I can dig them up.

Jaitea's avatar
RE: The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).

Yeah,DF Shadow, I think I'll keep it re-ordered as Adywan did it, it makes more sense.

I don't like the Jabba scene, but I might muck about with it.....you know me!.. :)

RE: The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).

The only way I can think of getting the Jabba scene to do anything is by changing the subtitles so he says something different.

You could cut away to an alien tough guy reaction shot to avoid the tail stepping scene.

The other Rodian could be a relative of Greedo so when Jabba mentions his death you could have a nice close up of his tough guy uncle/aunt/nephew/roommate contemplating great vengeance and furious anger on Han and then cut back to Han and Jabba.

Say goodbye, to all this and "hello" to Jason Issacs.

RE: The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).

Here's an idea I might try to put together... tell me what ya think.

Dinner scene with Luke and auntie and uncle. Luke gets up to leave...

-Luke: Looks like I'm going nowhere. I'm gonna finish cleaning those droids

he walks off, then, off screen we hear...

-Luke: Biggs?!

-Biggs: Luke!

-Luke: When did you get back?

-Biggs: Just now!

-Beru: Lukes just not a farmer Owen... He's got to much blahblah

-Owen: That's what I'm ablahblah.

Then we cut to the cut scene of Biggs and Luke drinking and talking. Maybe add some vaporators (or whatever they are) in the background to make it look more like they are at the Lars farm. Biggs gives Luke his news and leaves. We then cut to the sunset scene (the Biggs scene would be adjusted to look more like it's nearing sunset).

Ray, that might be the best edit idea I've ever heard.

RE: The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).

Yeah, that's pretty awesome, it wouldn't alter the introduction of Luke but it would add that awesome scene back. I really like that scene (much more so than the one where his friends don't believe him about the battle, which is pretty crap) it gives you a much needed idea about why the Empire is so bad and it has a great pay-off in the Yavin battle, when Biggs dies.

And there is apparently a gap between the diner scene and the sunset scene, as the dinner takes place in daylight.

Glad you guys like the idea! The scene with Biggs is (well, would be) my favorite scene in Star Wars. Like Harmy said, it adds more emotion to Biggs' death at the end, fleshes out a bit about the empire and whats going on in the galaxy and I think placing it after the dinner scene really adds to Luke's hopes/frustrations during the sunset scene.
