Modern SE Revisionism — Page 3

I’m generally against the ignore feature because I think it’s silly, but when a certain person only posts the same thing over and over, it might not be so silly.

You mean like the ones opening threads about “what if the PT blablabla”, “what would you have done blablabla”, and every single comment made about how bad is AOTC and the PT in general ? And the one always saying he does not like anime and the EU ?

I make threads like those?

and every single comment made about how bad is AOTC and the PT in general ?

They’re objectively bad and 99% of us here understand it, but the remaining 1% need help if they’re ever going to recover.

And the one always saying he does not like anime and the EU ?

I never said I don’t like anime. As a scientist, I merely report on the objective terribleness of anime.

I never said I don’t like the EU, I said I don’t care about the EU.

I was looking through Amazon Prime and saw that there’s a ROTJ (Theatrical Version) available. I haven’t been able to verify this yet but for those who have, is this for real?

Never Mind

What a con!

Amazon Prime Video knowingly mis-selling an altered CGI/Special Edition version of Return Of The Jedi - yet labelling it as ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Theatrical Version)👎

‘Scott’ in the Comment Section of the supposed ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Theatrical Version)’ knows the score, from 2018:-

“I love the movie but this gets a one star because it is a lie. It says theatrical version. This is not the theatrical version it is the altered version where they added in scenes and changed music. I already have this version on dvd. I bought this only because it said theatrical version. I hate the changes to the movie and just want to watch it the way it was. Don’t buy this if you want the unchanged version or you are wasting your money.”

&

‘1stSpear’ in the Comment Section - way back in 2015:-

“I love Return of the Jedi, always have… but this version has the ridiculous and unnecessary CG sequences especially at Jabba’s palace (that atrocious singing sequence) and the young Anakin “spirit” at the end, which totally ruined the whole movie in my opinion. I wish Amazon gave you a choice of buying this one or the original remastered version.”

I hope Scott and the others got their money back from being mis-sold a version of a film that the seller knows it is not the ‘theatrical version’ of the film.

Each OT movie has 3 entries on Prime Video: HD, HD with bonus features, and UHD. Only RotJ’s HD listing has this label. It’s weird as hell, but Amazon is weird as hell.

I’m surprised this thread doesn’t see more action that it does.

On the official Star Wars site there is a section for ‘Empire Strikes Back at 40’ - celebrating the film’s 40th anniversary:-

https://www.starwars.com/empire-40th

In the ‘Gallery’ section is an article titled ‘The Empire Strikes Back Story Gallery’…

which features images not from 40 years ago - from the original version of the film - but shots from the later Special Edition releases.

Of course, there is no mention of which image is from which release - and so anyone who doesn’t know better would assume they were all from the Empire Strikes Back… 40 years ago.

(I can’t link to the ‘The Empire Strikes Back Story Gallery’ article, sorry. It is there - along with a couple of other ESB galleries.)

I was watching the bonus features from a few years ago where they interviewed the crew who did the effects at ILM, and when they are talking about specific shots from the original in the special features it is a Special Edition shot. Did the person editing those clips together not notice or did they just not care? I think Rinzler was the one who did those new digital special features.

Rinzler puts in original shots in his books and they act like they’re placeholders and replace them with SE shots. He knows the difference.

The opening line of the Foreword by Doug Chiang in The Art of Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker is:
Quote : “More than forty years ago, George Lucas established the template for the modern Star Wars Art Department when he assembled a small group of gifted artists to design Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.”

Not a picture example, but the common mistake of attributing the post 81 title to events before the title existed.

Lucas is the one who claims it was always called that but it confused the executives at Fox and Alan Ladd Jr.

The first time the title surfaced was in the public script not the shooting script edited by Carol Titleman in the art of Star Wars. Unless i am mistaken and my memory is failing me again. That was well before 1981 that was in the 1970s. Not sure when it was first published. I don’t have a first edition at hand.

Funny thing even when the Episode IV title was old news and it had A New Hope at the beginning the film was still just called Star Wars. I don’t remember a single person calling it a new hope. I even have VHS copies and Laserdiscs where it just says Star Wars. The standee displays and advertising was for Star Wars.

^ I hadn’t heard George claiming that Alan Ladd Jr and the Fox execs talked him out of calling it ‘Episode IV: A New Hope’ before.

It seems strange that the scripts and script notes for ESB had ‘Episode V’ on them - yet while filming ESB the film was sometimes referred to as ‘Star Wars 2’ or ‘Episode II’:

With the amount of revisionism that Geoerge does (and many discredited claims), it is sometimes difficult to believe him and find the actual truth or events 😃

The first part is most likely Lucas revisionism i agree, but Star Wars a New Hope goes back to November of 1979. In the first edition of the art of star wars. But yeah it was only spliced into prints with a new rollup and starfield in 1981.

Some things do go way back. Some fans insist Sith was created on the prequels. But it goes back to the 1976 Novelization where Darth Vader was a Dark Lord of the Sith.

As for midichlorians i still believe those were created during the prequels and Rinzler will never convince me otherwise.

The ‘Empire Strikes Back’ is back in the cinemas for the US…

https://twitter.com/starwars/status/1306994972135026689 (official Star Wars website):-

‘The Empire Strikes Back in theaters on September 25! See showtimes and celebrate the 40th anniversary: Fandango link

Though beware, if it is the same as what they did in the UK not so long ago… it will actually be the 2011 blu ray version being shown. Despite it being advertised, or inferred, on the poster and other advertising spiel that it the 40th Anniversary/original 1980 version…

I imagine ‘celebrate the 40th Annniversary of Empire Strikes Back by watching the 2011 version of it’ would not have had the same impact 😉

Even if they were allowed how would they show the original for a re-release for the 40TH anniversary.

It was never restored. It is all well and good to dig up a print and show it. But Lucasfilm never bothered to restore the theatrical cuts of the films.

People talk all the time about the films not being available on home video, but they are not available for theatrical distribution either. It was a huge oversight on Lucas part to not restore the originals, it was a deliberate oversight.

Yeah, Even as late as the 1997 SE campaign it was still being referred to and marketed as just Star Wars. I think the 1995 “Faces” VHS has A New Hope on the spine in tiny lettering underneath Star Wars in bold, but it wasn’t until the 2000 VHS re-release of the SEs (Which were no longer being branded as Special Editions) that the original film began to be marketed as Episode IV: A New Hope. It was also during the prequel era that fans and joe schmoes started referring to the film in casual conversation as A New Hope.

It was also around 2000 that the original versions disappeared entirely from the market, to the point that even video rental chains were being forced to carry the SE only when many stores had previously carried both up until then. This was the “Order 66” for the original versions being available anywhere from that point on, as it was at this point in time when a concentrated effort had been made by Lucasfilm to “wipe out” all remnants of the original versions from public accessibility.

A couple weeks ago I sparked an SE argument with the guy who wrote the Star Wars Archives “1977-1983” for him using SE images in his book. He claimed it’s not a problem to talk all about motion control models then only have finished CG images made 20 years later because “Lucas’ intent”. He later responded to someone asking why the theatrical cuts shouldn’t be released and he responded asking why should they if it wasn’t what Lucas originally wanted to release?

If a guy who researched and interviewed everyone involved with making the movies doesn’t understand why the ORIGINAL WORK should be preserved, I’m not sure we can convince anyone. I’m going to keep on keeping on because I’m never going to give up, ever, but it sucks.

The guy (Paul Duncan) interviewed George Lucas recently for his Star Wars books (there’s an Archives for the prequels coming soon), so maybe he doesn’t want to upset George by defending the theatrical cuts? It’s better for his work to stay in good terms, no matter what…

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Oh, I’m sure of it. But there’s a difference between not advocating for the theatrical cuts and asking why anyone would want them in the first place.

I don’t know but shouldn’t an archive of the making of the Original film actually reflect that film, and not some 1990s cgi that was garbage. Even Rian Johnson referred to the special edition as the cartoon versions.

I wish i could find that comment its probably since been deleted.
