Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic thread - relevant political discussion allowed in here

A thread for discussing the Coronavirus pandemic and the effects it may well soon have on us - if not already.

Hopefully, it will not affect anyone directly on here.

Stay safe. Wash those hands. Be considerate for others.

Don’t deny others vital essentials and hoard much needed products then sell for profit.

In amgonst the misleading clickbait, bogus cures & remedies, stories of selfishness & greed… there are stories of good too:-

Moderator Edit: We ask that you check any stories or articles before posting them in this thread - we don’t want any misinformation, conspiracy theories, or your own personal ‘expert’ medical opinions posted as fact (unless you ARE a medically qualified and practicing doctor or epidemiologist etc) - thank you.

Moderator Update - 18th March: The mods, upon request, have decided to allow relevant political discussion on the coronavirus pandemic in this thread - and in this thread only. IF it goes well we consider allowing further political discussions in the future. Yet obviously, we do not wish to see a return to type and level of posting that led to the political threads remaining locked on several previous occasions… and the subject of politics being ultimately banned from the site…

For example:-

‘President / Prime Minister is a ****’ will see political discussion being banned in here immediately.

‘President / Prime Minister doesn’t know what he / she is doing in this situation and should leave it to… because…’ is fine.

“Hopefully, it will not affect any directly on here.”

Economically I have lost all my work until the ban is lifted trying to find other income at the moment but it’s hard to know where the demand will be.

Basically there are both supply and demand shortages in various industries or markets but this is all constantly in flux.

I have direct family at risk, they’ve closed down most non essentials in my area and we’re staying mindful but still doesn’t seem yet understood how long this will last which is my real worry.

I’m handing out compliments left and right and encouraging people to chill out. Showed up unannounced at a friend’s house who had all the drapes closed and told her to get her ass out of bed (didn’t work).

I’m dancing and singing to people at work as of yesterday. I got enough money to last a bit and took a walk through my deserted town and pretended I was the last person on Earth.

My parents’ live close by and asked me to bring over my bluray of The Andromeda Strain, I told them that “sounds like watching Turbulence while flying.”

Meanwhile my ex-wife in Japan is joking to me about America’s paper shortage (they went through that two weeks ago), and another close friend lives in the woods, shits in a compost toilet, and uses leaves to wipe her ass.

I’ve lived through enough crazy shit to know that we’ll be fine. It’s the latest craze. A lot of numbers being thrown around. How many people in the world died from car accidents or shootings today? This is some real first world problems crap. 😛

I’ll bow out before it gets heated. I’m mindful and love the people around me. Illinois will be in lockdown before the week is over. I sent some care packages earlier to friends around the world who might need them. ✌

There is no need to bow out eiyosus, as these things should be discussed.

Many people are going to worried about their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours; visiting them, spending time with them, and helping them out would be the usual thing to do in similar situations… yet unfortunately in this one it could likely prove a serious issue in itself.

There is a lack of care for the elderly and vulnerable in general everyday life; we worry about them, it is only natural to do so, and given the circumstances of this virus in particular, it is considerably more frustrating and worrying that we cannot help them as we previously would.

Good on you for helping them out and sending the packages.

Though, when you say ‘we’ll be fine’ and ‘This is some real first world problems crap’ - for many people this will not be the case; including elderly relatives, friends and neighbours - as well as those with underlying medical conditions or compromised immune systems etc.

And also for the 7500+ people who have already lost their lives; their families and loved ones. The 6500+ in ‘serious/critical’ condition, the 95,000 in ‘mild’ condition, and the many many people out there who may have it and have not yet even been tested, along with the chances of it spreading further.

Not to mention those who’ve lost their jobs, or are self-employed, or have little-to-no money or savings. If you’re in France, Spain and Italy there is some financial help out there. Other countries, including the UK, there is next to fuck all - and much of the advice we are getting from our ‘leaders’ is contradictory from one day to the next, and insufficient at best.

Plus the selfish idiots who have ensured there is next to nothing on the shelves in certain areas as regards to certain foods and grocery-wise (toilet roll, handwash and tinned goods, especially). And many stores were seemingly unwilling to prevent them emptying the shelves.

The problem with this virus is that because it can spread so fast that the only way to truly stop it is to enact a paralysis to stop the spread and the only true grounds on which to fight it on.

So today I am going to help my mother do shopping for her and cut the grass in the garden. She is in the High risk category but it upsets me that all I will be able to do is be some distance from her whilst talking and drop the shopping on the floor. This is what we must do to try to stay safe. She will have to be inside the house for around 12 weeks in the UK is the current advice.

I have to do this but the issues are all very complicated surrounding the contagion as the experts still seem a bit mystified on truly how it spreads only that it spreads fast.

I work in the travel industry and this is turning out to be a devastating blow. I’m not convinced that this extreme reaction was truly necessary, but at this point that’s moot. This is where we are and it is having an insanely negative impact on my career field. The fallout remains mostly unknown at this point but it’s almost certain that pay cuts and layoffs are coming in droves.

I only hope the company for which I work survives this episode and that I make it through without losing my job.

I’m in the same boat as you mate. A concerning time not just for ourselves - but our loved ones too.

The old girl lives on her own, is 70+ and deaf, and has several underlying medical conditions - including heart failure, and requires a range of medication just to keep her ‘going’. The local GP has been superb - though there is only so much they can do (already stretched to breaking before this coronavirus) and they admit the Govt leadership on this has been lacking, confusing and of little help (to say the least).

12 weeks is a long time for anyone in isolation, yet it has to be done. I’m just worried she’ll start chatting to the neighbours over the fence, and because she’s deaf and needs to read lips to help communicate… will get too close to them and void the isolation and potentially endanger herself / others.

Good luck to you and yours mate.

Currently I’m still working (I do QA at a plastic meal tray factory), and we shouldn’t be affected unless we run out of orders with no new orders being placed, or existing orders get cancelled, or we run out of raw materials and can’t source any more.

More concerningly, 3 of the 5 people on my shift on Sunday were out sick, and the person on my opposite shift (I work a 2 on/2 off/3 on/2 off/2 on/3 off schedule) had to suddenly fly to Utah for a week for her dad’s funeral, so if we can’t keep fully staffed we might get screwed there too (I would complain about having to work 12hrs every night for the next week but the overtime could mean the difference between affording rent or homelessness if I do get laid off).

Currently I’m guessing I have at least 2 more weeks of work left just based on existing orders that aren’t yet cancelled, but beyond that I have no idea. I want to think that with everyone quarantined, demand for our product (used in microwave dinners, prepackaged meats, stuff like that) will either stay where it is or increase, but I really don’t know. And then there’s the raw materials and shipping concerns…

I’m not gonna read the replies to this thread at the moment, but I’ve done a complete 180 just to be on the safe side.

I lived in Japan during a lot of outbreaks, so I’m a bit cynical about stuff, but I also lived in Moab, UT and that place is currently a total shitshow.

I work at a factory, and we have a skeleton crew at the moment. I took a smoke break and came back in and told my boss "We shouldn’t be here. I’m leaving in five minutes and won’t be back the rest of the week, use my vacation time. I’m protesting. " (I highly doubt we’ll be working next week anyway). And his demeanor completely changed around me and was yelling “Hell yes! I’m proud of you! I’m so mad that we’re here! I’m out of here at eleven!”

I walked out of there and then blasted some Japanese punk rock on my way home. I’m quarantining myself for a week. Old punk rock roots have kicked in. Felt pretty damn good, to be honest.

I still think some people around here are acting like idiots, hence my earlier “first world problems comment.” I’m glad I practice intermittent fasting.

Illinois shutdown begins in three, two…

Thanks oojason I hope you and your family also stay well and stay safe… The hardest problem I am currently encountering is persuading my at risk elderly mother to stay at home and not catch it.

Old people get set in their ways and as horrible as it may sound to my mother… Stay in, stay away from catching a highly infectious disease that might kill you, is an awkward discussion. She is over 70 diabetic and a smoker.

We have had arguments but she does know I love her and I don’t want any harm to come to her but psychologically I will do my best to try and shoulder that mindfuck for her that this invisible threat might threaten her life.

The best advice was “do you want to be in intensive care with a load of tubes down your neck?” in response to her attitude of “If I get it… I get it” I can’t blame her for this attitude it is normal but she can’t afford to catch it she is in the high risk group. Please all take this advice, it’s not about scaring your loved ones but trying to make them understand that it “IS” very dangerous to be complacent. I am scared she just want’s to gamble on the trip out and I just really hope she can stay in and be safe until it is safer to do so. I stocked up her food for 2 weeks I will see her before then hopefully. I will speak to her every day on the phone.

Meanwhile my Dad is in Spain and had a scare that he had caught the virus… He has bad flu but not the virus but pretty much the same symptoms now his partner is caught it also. Health is important but in the case of Spain when will that be open again? All on lockdown pretty much everywhere. I will have to go ASAP to see him too if I can. Both He and his partner are not as high risk though but still getting old.

Spot on, Ronster. It hasn’t helped with some of the contradictory and changing advice from our leaders on the news from day to day… a few older people I know see one piece of info and it sticks in their minds - and don’t take in what is said by the politicians the next day or day after that… contravenes previous advice. Along with the usual stubbornness some get in of old age, of course.

I’ve had to use the similar ‘do you want to risk infecting your friends, family and others with this?’ when a couple of the older in-laws wanted to pop down the supermarket because they had a dry cough and then pop in on family members and the neighbours on the way back! (the response was basically they were only getting some cough medicine and wouldn’t stay long at the family and neighbours as they were a feeling fatigued!)

With allergy season kicking in for much of Europe soon it’ll likely worry many people displaying similar symptoms to the coronavirus too. The lack of testing in general for the coronavirus really hasn’t helped.

Hope you make it to Spain and back when it is possible.

Well Done Ireland.

I read an article from italien citizen explaining the various stages and denial.

Basically people carry on like it won’t affect them until you have an exponential explosion in cases. Mind you places like Spain and Italy have a lovely greeting of kissing both cheeks is also one of the worst things you can do when a virus like this is doing the rounds.

Do what you are told, get rid of it. Then fingers crossed and touch wood we can get back to something normal and get the economy going again with as little loss of life as possible.

You too Ray, my man.

Am hoping your business - and many others’ on here - doesn’t suffer too badly from this.

Our PM (in the UK) is finally starting to make sense with the Govt response - though is still light on the detail of plans; such as some schools remaining open for the kids of emergenccy and essential workers - but no details on where, how many, added protction for staff and so on.

Or the shortage of supplies and essentials for emergency staff working in hospitals. It is almost like this is a harsh lesson as to what happens when you cut the NHS and other social care to the bone - unfortunately the PM and his cronies won’t likely be feeling the effects themselves, it’ll be those working for the NHS and the regular everyday person on the end of it.

This article by Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet medical journal, highlights the UK’s slowness in reacting to what was coming back in January:-

Scientists have been sounding the alarm on coronavirus for months. Why did Britain fail to act? - at The Guardian

https://twitter.com/richardhorton1/status/1239807835984273408 : https://twitter.com/TheLancet

I’ve seen some of statements from Trump over the duration of this - all the way back to January; the man seems to be a fantasist, someone who could George Lucas a run for his money on the revisionism stakes! Big difference is this is people’s lives at stake, and we are in a situation where trust and belief in our leaders and the people around them is needed…

Genuinely wishing you guys all the best over there.

"Donald Trump is addressing the country at a televised press conference from the White House at the moment.

After an awkward delay of several minutes, the US president has just taken the stage to begin the coronavirus press briefing today.

Trump then reiterates almost word for word the message he tweeted out a few minutes ago: “It’s very important that we protect our Asian American community in the US and all around the world. They’re amazing people and the spreading of the virus is not their fault in any way, shape or form.”

That new message, after the Trump administration spent a week embracing the racist tactic of calling coronavirus the “Chinese virus” and then responding with outrage and denial when it was labeled as racist, comes in the wake of growing evidence of the toll of racist attacks, harassment and blame targeting Asian Americans across the country.

Trump opened his press conference with the promise that “the hardship will end. It will end soon.”

“Our country was not built to be shut down,” Trump said. “This is not a country that was built for this. It was not built to be shut down.”"

Words fail me. I’d no idea Trump had been calling it the ‘Chinese virus’ - and confirms just what an ignorant person he is. I take it he won’t be taking any responsibility for it, again.

The stricter the anti-epidemic measures, the lower the spread of the virus. Strict quarantine in Wuhan, closed educational institutions and factories, street fences, patrols, delimitation of zones, and the prohibition of free movement allowed reducing the growth of new infections in China to several hundred per day (and there were several thousand per day). But everything has a price. Disabled Chinese factories are disrupting production chains around the world, and commodity prices are falling. During quarantine, Chinese firms still have to pay wages to workers at home, which puts firms on the brink of bankruptcy.

The tourism and transport industries are already beginning to feel the effects of COVID-2019 and one can expect that it will only get worse. In my opinion, it will end in a severe economic crisis (more serious than in 2009). I would be glad to make a mistake…

^ One of last few newspapers to have competent investigative journalism in the UK, IMHO mate. Distinctly different than tabloids or political-based mouthpieces of their tax dodging owners; who seem to specialise in the spread of fear, hate and division upon us.

They also welcome opinion articles for various viewpoints and ideologies. The Guardian isn’t perfect (what is?), but it does a lot better job on reporting the news than most out there. It also isn’t afraid to run ‘unpopular’ pieces either, or criticise the current Govt - something that the BBC has strayed away from in recent times.
