How Star Wars was saved in the edit:
https://youtu.be/zEHRNS-Scrs - from the RocketJump Film School YouTube channel (2017 video essay - 18 minutes).

“A video essay exploring how Star Wars’ editors recut and rearranged Star Wars: A New Hope to create the cinematic classic it became”

Written by David Welch.
Narrated and edited by Joey Scoma.

Not to nitpick, but I’d think video essays might be a different category from documentaries? Your thread of course.

The thread title also includes “making ofs” and “promos”, and there’s been interviews added as well. Plus, I only wrote “video essay” because that’s what they called it. It’s basically a short documentary, and a really interesting one at that, so I felt it was worth sharing here.

As I said I will of course defer to you. I haven’t seen the video in question but I tend to think of a ‘video essay’ as an analysis of a work, rather than a behind the scenes documentary. But maybe I should watch the video before I critique.

Yeah, that’s what I’d generally associate with the word as well, and the video is partially an analysis, though I’d say it’s 80% a documentary about how ANH was re-edited after Lucas screened the rough cut to several filmmaker friends; incl. Spielberg and Brian De Palma, the latter of which was not particularly impressed (to put it mildly).

Mark Hamill interviewed on set of Star Wars (1976)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-XGbzcGx7s&t - from mielr’s YouTube channel.

Bit of a rarity this one as the first film didn’t really have much promotion until after it started making money on in the box office, so it’s interesting to see an interview on the DS set. We’re so used to ESB and ROTJ interviews done during the production, but I can’t recall having ever seen the same done for ANH.

Does anyone know where this is from? Or if the whole thing has been posted somewhere?

Industrial Light & Magic - Traditional Matte Paintings’?:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQTdOcYK9Ds - at the Thomas Thiemeyer youtube channel. (26 mins)

About (from the video description):-

“Some rare video clips of the matte paintings done for the original Star Wars trilogy and other films. Traditional movie tricks. A topic that still fascinates me. Here I have collected some, sometimes quite rare, video clips for classic matte painting in Star Wars films.”

^ Does anyone know what documentary it is from - or mainly from? I don’t know much about it apart from it is a fascinating watch on how some of the effects were achieved for our beloved films.

Standby…Lights! Camera! Action! - Leonard Nimoy hosts the making of Return of the Jedi (fragment)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqwhDLngwNY - from the Filmumentaries com YouTube channel (7 mins long)

Short promo/commercial for the episode; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThW0Zt_J4pA

“Standby…Lights! Camera! Action! was an American educational television series hosted by Leonard Nimoy. The program aired on Nickelodeon from October 1982 to December 31, 1987. Episodes of the show include interviews with film crew members and examine the stages of production for various motion pictures in a behind-the-scenes format.”
Wikipedia link.

The fragment posted above includes footage of the Jabba Sail Barge set, interviews with Phil Tippet & Richard Marquand, and a tour of the creature workshop. It also has Nimoy clarify to 1983 viewers that the title of the film has been changed from “Revenge of the Jedi” to “Return of the Jedi” and that it will be the third episode of a “middle trilogy” of nine films.

PS. I skimmed through YouTube but I couldn’t find more of the episode. Please let me know if you know where I can find the whole thing.

As a little follow up to my first post; Michel Parbot’s The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, as well as the interview I found of Mark Hamill on the DS set in 1976, Mielr has two more interesting oddities on her YouTube channel that I felt was worth sharing here.

Mark Hamill & Harrison Ford interviews - The Empire Strikes Back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOiNF8uB4Ho

Carrie Fisher interview - The Empire Strikes Back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-QFbOZJpc4

These clips are clearly outtakes from the Parbot documentary. The backgrounds, camera angles all match, but these particular clips do not appear in the finished film.

Learned about what sounds like a pretty great one, but I can’t seem to find where to watch it!

A Night at the Movies: George Lucas and the World of Fantasy Cinema
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4837300/

“Director George Lucas discusses the fantasy genre of films, covering more than a century of filmmaking, and explains the inspirations for his popular Star Wars saga.”

Seems to be totally unavailable to me but I’d be happy to be wrong. This is one of my favorite aspects of the films!

That sounds really interesting. I did a quick google and YT search myself and only managed to find the TCM intro for it. If it does show up at some point I’m sure someone will post it. Though, just to nitpick, as it’s more about fantasy as a genre and SW in a very broad sense so I think the General Star Wars Documentaries thread might be the better place for it.

Though obviously not one of the most beloved aspects of the OT’s history (especially on this forum), the Special Editions are none-the-less a part of it and the doc. below is a fascinating watch regardless.

Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition - Behind the Scenes (1997)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzApL8nUyT0&t - from the Trent Pruitt YouTube channel (29 mins long)

I would add an IMDB or Wiki link, or something like that, but I’m honestly not too sure about where this is from. If you do know, please let me know so I can add more info to this post.

Probably the funniest thing in that SE doc is Rick McCallum not knowing what he’s talking about. “The original mix was so complex, so good, but there was no technology to actually hear it.”
