George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist...

Mocata said:

Recent George soundbite where he says why Yoda talks that way.

"He was basically the philosopher of the movie, so he was talking about all the things. I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen, especially 12 year olds.”

https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/yoda-speak-george-lucas-explains-1235326334/

However, just a few years earlier Frank Oz said it was his own idea based on one line in the script:

“It’s funny you ask about that because I was just looking at the original script of The Empire Strikes Back the other day and there was a bit of that odd syntax in it, but also it had Yoda speaking very colloquially. So I said to George ‘Can I do the whole thing like this?’ And he said: ‘Sure!’ It just felt so right.”

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/aug/30/frank-oz-on-life-as-fozzie-bear-miss-piggy-and-yoda-id-love-to-do-the-muppets-again-but-disney-doesnt-want-me

Yeah, it was Frank Oz who came up with the idea of Yoda speaking in the manner he does throughout the film - based off that line from in the script. Frank then suggested to George that he do the whole role of Yoda like that - and George agreed.

George is, once again, being disingenuous (or an ‘unreliable narrator’ again… you’re shocked, right?! 😉).

There’s a good 2018 interview with Frank Oz on the subject, here:-

Frank Oz on the Challenges of Bringing Yoda to Life (Part 1) - circa 6 minutes and 45 seconds in (though the whole thing is well worth a watch, giving insights on the importance of the characterisation by the performer as well as the voice - and Part 2 of the video), as well.

Plus this 40 second clip of Frank Oz’ informative explanation: www.tiktok.com/@starlordziggy/video/7459962004242140462

Edit (found it): At 30m 35s into this 2013 interview with Frank Oz: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BN-l4r2eIA (the whole interview is very much worth a watch discussing many aspects of Fran Oz’ life and work):-

Frank Oz: "He [George] wants me to bring alive the character that he and Larry Kasdan wrote - that’s what he wants. He wants something that transcends what’s on the paper. He doesn’t want a voice. He doesn’t know what he wants at that point because it has never been done, first of all.

Interviewer: Who invents the Yoda language? Who invented the language?

Fran Oz: Larry and George wrote the language, but they didn’t see it through all the way, and I asked George if I could really hone in on the language and he said ‘yeah’… so I made it very specific… and carried their idea throughout. But this voice thing is very… it’s a red herring, not for you, for everybody, because by the way, George Lucas didn’t want my voice in the beginning. I gave him a tape. He said ‘no, thank you’. (interview continues on)

^ That’s not to take anything away from the likes of Kasdan, George, Kershner, Peter Suschitzky, Stuart Freeborn and his team, Jim Henson’s input, the Yoda puppeteering team, stage crew, and also Mark Hamill (whose performance helps sell Yoda, greatly).

And I think it is mentioned in Alan Arnold’s superb 1980 book 'Once upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of the Empire Strikes Back’ - though I’m not 100% on that, I’ll look it up later (I don’t have it to hand). It was in JW Rinzler’s ‘The Making Of Empire Strikes Back’ book (which references Alan Arnold’s book & tapes numerous times), on Page 244:-

I think where some people may get confused is they saw George’s quote from the same above book by JW Rinzler (on Page 44)

… where George says he “started Yoda’s backwards style” and then take it as verbatim; when if fact there is much more to Yoda speaking in the manner he does throughout the film… as Frank Oz himself has consistently stated in numerous sources over the years (with a few examples given above and below).

Les Dilley, Oscar-Winning Production Designer Who Worked on ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, Dies at 84

https://variety.com/2025/film/news/les-dilley-dead-star-wars-indiana-jones-production-designer-1236409274

'Les Dilley, a Welsh production designer and art director who won Academy Awards for their work on “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars,” died Tuesday from complications of Alzheimer’s. He was 84.

“Les’s legacy lives on in the many iconic films he helped bring to life for over six decades and in his family home he personally built as an homage to his work,” his family said in a statement. “His love for the motion picture business was evident to the very end. When he wasn’t on set, he enjoyed constructing things in his workshop at home, playing ice hockey, and a good cup of tea. In addition to his incredible work ethic, quirky British humour, and love of life, he was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He will be greatly missed.”

Dilley is best known for his work on the immortal Lucasfilm franchise starters “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He received Oscars for best art direction for both films in 1978 and 1982, respectively. He also received Academy noms for his production design on “The Abyss,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Alien.”

His other notable credits include “Superman,” “An American Werewolf in London,” “Never Say Never Again,” “Legend,” “The Exorcist III,” “Casper,” “Deep Impact” and “Inspector Gadget.”

Born in 1941 in the Rhondda Valley of South Wales, Dilley entered the industry at 23 as a plaster worker on the 1963 Bond adventure “From Russia With Love.” He quickly rose through the art department to become a draughtsman and then assistant art director on films like 1972’s “Kelly’s Heroes” and Norman Jewison’s 1973 rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

Dilley is survived by his wife of 38 years, Leslie Lykes Dilley, and his five children: Sophia Dilley, Leslie John Dilley II, Ivory Dilley, Emma Jane Dilley and Georgia Dilley.’

RIP Les Dilley. What a legacy and life.

⭐ Star Wars' <strong>50th anniversary</strong> in 2027 ⭐ | Your hopes and expectations <em>(if any)</em>...
Time

The 25th May, 2027… will see the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.

What are your hopes and expectations (if any) for how the event will be marked and celebrated that year?

Of course, I hope they pull out all the stops for the 50th anniversary… and we finally see a high quality official release for the unaltered theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy - in HD/UHD/4K etc… though I won’t be holding my breath.

Even a long-awaited official release of the 1997 Special Editions cuts on a modern home format would be welcome (despite Lucasfilm always having pristine prints available and at the ready… the 1997 SE version has never been released in HD/UHD/4K etc).

We’ll likely have a repackaged deluxe / ‘super’ box-set release of the 2019 SE ‘Maclunkey’ cuts to mark the anniversary instead?

A new documentary perhaps? Along with likely more disingenuous / revisionist claims and mythologizing from George.

Plus the usual array of ‘50th anniversary’ labelled merch. As well as rebranded reprints of the old comics and books etc.

Maybe a limited theatrical run for the 3 Original Trilogy films? (although it would likely be the 2019 SE ‘Maclunkey’ cuts actually screened to somehow promote and celebrate the 50th anniversary - if other recent anniversary ‘re-runs’ are anything to go by…)

Threads on various Star Wars anniversaries can be found in the following category of ‘An Index for Original Trilogy Discussion’…

9️⃣ • Anniversaries - 2027 for the 50th : 2017, 2020, & 2023 for the 40th : other anniversaries & ‘Star Wars Days’ (25th May)

x

Star Wars Celebration 2027 takes place in LA - from the Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th April; at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

It should be a big event - and even feature some actual Original Trilogy (likely SE?) content… given it’ll be the 50th anniversary.

^ There was nothing at all on the OT for the main panels in Japan - even ILM’s 50th anniversary didn’t have anyone from the OT era.

Hi everyone!

As the title suggests this is an HD reconstruction of the 1997 version of ROTJ. This is a project I’ve been intending to do for a while now and I finally have something that I can call watchable. Since there are two very well made reconstructions of the 97 versions of ANH and ESB (thanks to Harmy, Team Blu, and Adywan) I figured ROTJ needed a reconstruction done in some capacity!

**V3 update: V3 is now live, and is finally exactly how I like it, thanks to me switching to Davinci Resolve. Regrained, better color, and video synced up to the audio down to the last frame (v2 seemed to always be slightly out of sync). The “Return of the Jedi Visual Comparison” was used, so there are no post-97 changes in this version at all!

I used 5 sources for this project (updated for v3):

  • 2019 Special Edition Blu Ray
  • Max DNR version of 4k83 (to undo post 1997 changes)
  • ROTJ LD upscale and multi-capture merge (thanks ZigZig and Rancor022/DarthPyro!)
  • 2004 HDTV broadcast provided by schorman (for opening logos)
  • althor’s LD capture (for reference and DTS audio, LD audio, subtitles, and chapters)

Extra things done:
*added a 35mm grain palette over 2019 BD, 2004 HDTV, and LD footage to blend in better with 4k83 footage
*color corrected a handful of 4k83 clips to blend in with surrounding scenes
*I did leave the color of the 2019 BD alone since it appears that they did use the 1997 versions as a color reference.

Video dimensions: 1920x1080p (cropped to Disney’s 2.39 aspect ratio), 23.976fps
File Size: 19.53gb mkv

PM me for a link and share some feedback here if you’d like. Thanks!

I highly doubt this person gives links anymore but if you want to see this film’s 1997 Special Edition like it was in theatres in 1997, check my preservation of that. The films are all available.

Links are available to both of ImBateman’s ‘1997 Special Edition HD Reconstructions’ - ESB and ROTJ in here:-

📍 250+ available Original Trilogy Preservations - some from a long time ago . . . . 📍

Also, it is poor form to come into someone else’s project thread - then incorrectly claim that it is no longer available - and then promote your own project.

Sorry about that mate. I’m new to these editions and just came across them. Not trying to take away credit from the original creator at all.

Are there any instructions to how to download it? I’m looking through the link you provided but I only see it looping back to the thread where he says you can PM him for the link.

No worries, mate.

As you are new around here - welcome to the OT 👍 - and you may want to give these a read through…

Favorite official non-theatrical non-Special Edition release of each OT movie
Time

It varies for me depending on mood and nostalgia…

Today… it is the GOUT for me - for the main reason if it being the one physical release I can still actually play (I’ve no working VHS machine anymore!) Plus, the GOUT will be played later tonight - it is ‘Star Wars Day’ after all. 👍

And I do miss the physicality of media… even if it is a only DVD or CD (I know; it is somewhat lacking in comparison to VHS tapes and laserdiscs - or tapes and vinyl… though sometimes you have to settle for the smaller wins, too.)

Plus for all the stick it gets - it does represent the fans’ victory in achieving an official release of the OOT (of sorts - despite George’s disingenuous claims, laziness, and it being his choice to release it in a substandard obsolete format riddled with QC issues back then in 2006…).

What about yourself, darklordoftech?

<em><strong>ANDOR</strong></em> - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread
Time

'Disney Went to the Emmys and Said for Your Consideration: ‘Andor,’ All of It’:-

The ‘Star Wars’ series notched eight Emmy nominations for its first season, but went home empty-handed.

https://gizmodo.com/disney-went-to-the-emmys-and-said-for-your-consideration-andor-all-of-it-2000606618

'With Andor‘s second and final season now complete, Disney is hoping to turn the show’s critical raves and thoughtful discourse into award-season triumphs. It’s submitting the show for consideration in 23 categories at this year’s Emmys. Among the honors Andor hopes to compete for: Outstanding Drama Series, which it was nominated for back in 2023 but ended up losing to Succession.

The 2025 race is again a strong one, with Severance the likely frontrunner. But even if Andor doesn’t claim the top prize, it still has excellent chances to not only be nominated in, but win several other categories. According to Variety, these are the categories in which Disney is submitting Andor for Emmy consideration:

• Outstanding Drama Series
• Directing for a Drama Series: Janus Metz for episode 208, “Who Are You?”
• Writing for a Drama Series: Dan Gilroy for episode 209, “Welcome to the Rebellion”
• Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Diego Luna (Cassian Andor)
• Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen Rael); Kyle Soller (Syril Karn)
• Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma); Denise Gough (Dedra Meero); Adria Arjona (Bix Caleen); Faye Marsay (Vel Sartha); Elizabeth Dulau (Kleya Marki)
• Guest Actor in a Drama Series: Ben Mendelsohn (Orson Krennic); Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera); Benjamin Bratt (Bail Organa)
• Guest Actress in a Drama Series: Varada Sethu (Cinta Kaz)
• Character Voice-Over Performance: Alan Tudyk (K-2SO)

The rest of the categories are:

• Casting for a Drama Series
• Cinematography for a Series (One Hour)
• Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes,
• Period of Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
• Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling
• Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
• Music Composition for a Series (One Hour or More)
• Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score)
• Original Music and Lyrics (“We Are the Ghor”)
• Picture Editing for a Drama Series
• Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
• Sound Mixing for a Drama Series (One Hour)
• Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie
• Stunt Coordination for Drama Programming
• Stunt Performance.

This year’s Emmy nominations are announced July 15, and the ceremony will be held September 14 in Los Angeles.’

Innumerable treasures are being screened this year so this is merely a selection of all of the outstanding programs and panels.’ (timestamps in the video availablefor specific chapters)

^ Not being able to send a PM because your account is new… is NOT a reason to make ‘link request’ posts on here.

The <strong>Original Trilogy</strong> - a general <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> thread
Time

Personally, I’m so pleased that we now finally have a truly worthy Prequel Trilogy (2 seasons of Andor + Rogue One) for the Original Trilogy.

The other Prequel releases - the one true Prequel Trilogy: the 1978 Holiday Special and the 2 theatrical Ewok films… along with the other more dissonant PT films from '99-'05… never really cut it for me (though am glad others seem to enjoy them).

It has certainly been a long wait - yet a worthwhile one.
