The French set has the English crawls, and the subtitles are outside the picture in the lower black bar. But they are unfortunately missing those frames from ANH at the end of side 1/start of side 2.

Idea: Working & Releasing the Audiotracks separately?
Time
Grisan reported problems when syncing TR47's audio to the video from his German laserdiscs. See halfway down this thread:
http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=1389&STARTPAGE=2

Minor differences in the number of frames in a shot can add up to a noticeable de-sync over the length of the film. If you were to collect all the different soundtracks, you would also need some form of reference to the video as well, or some way of ensuring the audio can be synced to different video source.

RGB white is 255,255,255.
Analogue formats (eg YUV, YCbCr, YV12, YUY2) have a full range of 0-255, but black is set to 16 and white to 235 (16-235 is often referred to as TV range). PC range sets black to 0 and white to 255. If you open a huffyuv compressed source avi in VirtualDub (which uses RGB), the Huffyuv codec will convert the video, because otherwise black will be too high (16) and white too low (235).

Citizen, thanks for taking the time to do that comparison. I guess that proves that this is an issue with the DC disc.

I have yet to try a SweetSpot card. But I'm already using a card with a Philips SAA-7133 chip, which has a 10-bit ADC and an adaptive 3-line comb filter. I believe that's just about what the SweetSpot card has, too, isn't it? So except for build quality, and maybe some goofing around with the Philips reference design, I don't see how things would improve by leaps and bounds -- at least, not on the capture side. "Adaptive" = "Motion Adaptive" = "3D", correct?
If you check the SweetSpot FAQ, it mentions the 3 notional price bands for capture cards:
1. under £50
2. under £200
3. under £1000
The card I'm currently using is a BT878-based card in the first bracket. In fact I think it was about £20, as there's no tuner on it, just a composite and s-video input. The SweetSpot falls into price bracket 2. Would your card be comparable then?

I am also using a CLD-D925, which is apparently one of the two PAL-spec players that is generally regarded as being the best there ever was. I've looked at the schematics, and as best I can understand (I'm no electrical engineer), the composite signal is separated into Y/C early on, processed with a now-obsolete Sony comb filter, ... I'm not an electrical (or electronic?) engineer either. I understand the process to be as you described - the composite video from the disc always goes through the 2D comb filter, so will always pick up the dot crawl introduced at that stage. I believe that the composite output is simply the s-video combined. No one seems to know if the 2950 is similar, or if the comb filter is bypassed when the composite output is used on that model (and thus, using a 3D comb filter in such a capture card would benefit the quality of transfer). Where's Laserman when you need him? Also, I have heard some opinions suggesting that the 2950's playback is less noisy than the 925.

I really want to know what the outcome of such a combination would be. I read that Laserman was going to try this, but don't know if this ever happened. Rest assured, if you or Laserman don't beat me to it, I will definitely be doing some tests of my own in the future.

Yeah, I know. I've already called in my birthday present early - the PAL equivalent of the JVC SR-S365U (a rather nice VCR). But my wife's an expert at last minute bidding on eBay, and some shrewd purchases (tip: when searching for the PAL discs, try using krieg or guerre as keywords - sets without "Star Wars" in the auction title usually don't go as high) means that I've not spent anywhere near as much as some of the other preservationists. I think I've proved that you don't need to spend a huge amount of money to get a fairly decent transfer of your own.

PAL vs NTSC laserdiscs

Citizen, are you sure that the jaggedness is not caused by capturing to DV format?

The "burns" on the PAL discs, if I'm correct, seem to occur regularly on the frame prior to a scene change. However, I think the DC set exhibits the same defects, so maybe Karyudo is talking about something else. I don't have the ability or patience to rotoscope out such things, and I don't find dirt/scratches too objectionable (I feel they add a little authenticity and "retro" feel to the transfer ).

The dot crawl is a bit disappointing, and it's exacerbated by the sharpening. I realise it's because the 3-line 2D comb filter in the D925 isn't the best. Karyudo, do you think that capturing from the composite output of a 2950 with a SweetSpot card (contains a more advanced 3D comb filter) would give a visible improvement?

An updated Project Index list can now be found here - http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1042669 - in Page 3 of this thread.

The new and updated ‘Project Index’ - ‘A new Star Wars Project Index thread : Preservations, Fan Edits, Audio Projects, Fan Documentaries, Technical/Quality Improvements, and How To’s etc’ - can be found here:-

If you are new to the OriginalTrilogy•com then the following info may be of some assistance…

The Welcome to the OT.com; Introduce yourself in here thread is just that; a place to make your first post on here - and for more longstanding members to welcome new additions to our community.

Secondly, the About and Help sections may be of interest to you regarding this site and what the OriginalTrilogy•com is about.

Thirdly, the ‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - some info & answers to members’ queries thread should also hopefully be of some help as to many of the functions of the site, along with other related info as well.

The Announcements Section - including Site Rules & Guidelines, Fan Edit & Preservation Rules & FAQ, as well info for Signatures, Linking Policy for Downloads, and Plot Spoiler Policy (and much more) that may be of use too.

If you are having any issues with the site, have a question, an idea to improve the site, or would like to give some feedback - then these can be done in the Feedback Forum and General Assistance sections.

There are also several Index Threads pinned at the top of many respective sections of the OT•com - which may help members find various topics of discussion, fan edits, preservations and other projects etc.

To Join the OT.com Discord server! click on the link. There is also the OriginalTrilogy.com Twitter too.

'An OriginalTrilogy.com timeline thread - a history of the site and why & how it came to be…’ chronicles both the history of this site & also it’s continuing evolution.

The ‘Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes’ thread by doubleofive contains many sources of information as to the numerous changes made to the Original Trilogy films over time - as well as serving as an insightful and comprehensive discussion thread and reference point on the subject.

And, the ‘George Lucas: Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist…’ thread attempts to highlight and catalogue some of the revisionism, altering of history and contradictory claims by George Lucas / Lucasfilm as to the formation, planning and history of the Star Wars films and universe therein.

Finally, the A celebration of the Original Trilogy | Some informative threads | How you can help… thread - highlighting just a few of the many discussion threads on this site focusing on countless fans’ love and appreciation for the Original Trilogy - and ongoing dedication in attempting to achieve a modern, high quality, official release of the unaltered theatrical version of the classic Star Wars movies.

A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners - or any perceived ‘agendas’ or politics thereof.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ and so on, are not.

Fan Editors, Preservationists and members do not want the same sort of repeated comments and discussions in the ‘Fan Project’ areas - especially when they’ve already taken place (and continuing) in other more relevant sections of the site, as linked to above.

Looking to acquire projects on here? Then please read this…

(and take the time to look around to see how this place works - and doesn’t - before posting requests for projects on here - thank you)

A fair few people join here for a particular Preservation Project, Fan Edit, documentary, blu ray or dvd cover etc. We ask that those who do… also have a look around; see if there are other Projects, Edits or works of interest to your liking. To give the Star Wars discussion threads a read through, or those in the Off Topic sections. To have a think about becoming a part of the community here; and consider not becoming a one-time poster… asking for a link to a project and to never be seen again.

Many of the projects on here have been undertaken by volunteers or enthusiasts who’ve devoted considerable time, effort, dedication and some expense… to locate, preserve, restore & archive - or edit - films and TV programs in their best possible presentation. This is often with painstaking commitment - yet all projects are available for free; not to mention our members also improving upon & sharing techniques, knowledge, technical assistance, experiences - and a few stories, along the way.

Joining up here and then creating a new thread along the lines ‘Give me the link to X’, ‘Where is project Y’, or going straight into a project thread and posting ‘How do I get these?’ doesn’t really fly on here - and will likely be ignored or deleted. Taking the time to learn about a project - by reading through the project thread - as well as how to acquire them; simply making an effort to be part of the community here, and how this place works, even if just leaving feedback for acquired projects, can go a long way…

NOTE: Many editors & preservationists choose not to make their projects available to ‘hit & runners’ or people with a post history of mainly asking for many projects - which is completely up to them. That some people join up here looking to simply take - instead of give something back; not even leaving a simple ‘thank you’, feedback or review, or join in with the community here - and instead move on to asking for more projects… is not encouraged. As above, such requests may likely be ignored.

I have found a Fan Edit / Preservation Project I am interested in - but don’t know how to get / acquire / download it?

Yes Citizen your thinking is spot on.

I did indeed capture the VHS video as a reference to aid with the audio synching process. Even with this reference, it's still fairly time consuming to cut out all the 40ms sections that need removing to maintain sync (although it was a lot easier the second time with TESB).

For some reason I got my left and right audio channels switched again - this is with another VCR this time. It must be the audio cable that's wired up incorrectly, unless it's the actual line-in on my motherboard.

I've encoded the video for TESB, but on watching I've noticed that the colour saturation is not constant and needs to be tweaked on the video capped from sides 3 and 4. Which of course means that the 28 hours encoding time has been wasted...

Personally I'd recommend doing the MPEG encoding in software. Don't know if this card can capture to a lossless codec, looks to me like it does hardware MPEG encoding.

Back in the early days of this thread Laserman mentioned doing something with a PAL 2950 and quality capture equipment.

Were any captures ever made and if so, how do they compare with the captures made from the X0?

(Capturing from a 2950 using a SweetSpot card - the name the PDI Deluxe is sold under in Europe - is something I'd like to try some day.)
