In Europe, the success of Laserdisc was minimal, so the few released PAL titles, continue to use the official resolution for PAL (528 X 576). In theory, there is a 544 X 576, but I never saw a Pal laserdisc using this resolution.

This is very misleading. (I would say complete bollocks but I can actually see where he's coming from.)

I'm no video expert either, but I'll try and explain my simple view of things:

The specs on the D925 give a resolution of 440 lines (in the horizontal direction) for PAL playback. This is an analogue resolution, and represents the maximum frequency, or bandwidth, of a waveform stored on that analogue format, for laserdisc it's about 5.8MHz.

(There will always be 576 lines in the vertical direction, because that's the PAL standard).

When you capture a video signal, the waveform is digitised. Formulas (e.g. Nyquist) are supposed to give how many pixels you need to sample to ensure all the horizontal detail is captured, and I believe that's where this guy got the 528 and 544 from. (Depending on how you calculate the sample rate, I've seen this figure quoted as 600 for laserdisc, see section 3.5 of the Doom9 capture guide.)

But this is all academic when you're capturing to make a DVD. Since the final desired resolution is 720, you should alway capture at 720 to avoid having to resize later. (I know I cropped some blank pixels down to 704 for my DVD, but I didn't resize, I just added in an 8-pixel wide border either side.)

I don't understand what you mean by "real" resolution.

The actual image resolution before scaling was 704 x 324 - because I trimmed 16 (mostly black) pixels from the left hand side. This image was upsampled vertically to 324 x (16/9 ÷ 4/3) = 432. To convert to NTSC, you need to downsample vertically to 432 / (576 ÷ 480) = 360.

Unless you're talking about the "analogue" horizontal resolution of laserdiscs which isn't really relevant when talking about pixels. Even then, the vertical resolution or number of lines is fixed at 576 (324 for the actual image).

Scaling down then back up is just an extreme form of noise reduction!

From what I heard - and this is probably not very reliable - but this workprint wasn't leaked to a warez group by an industry insider in exchange for access to leet ftps full of porn and cracked software; it was stolen. By stolen I mean a proper, break in and take something without permission, sort of crime. And that's how the FBI got involved.

I don't know if that's true or not, but certainly this release didn't filter down through the usual route.

Anyway, that torrent site was one of the first to have it, and the FBI thought the administators of the site had something to do with the theft, or could help trace the thieves, and used that against them.

I must stress this is pretty conjectural.

Star Wars references in other movies

The start of Airplane 2 has a piss-take on the Star Wars opening crawl.

Robots: The robot that needs a new voice box picks up one that gives him Vader's voice.

Well they've got their facts wrong then because "Raiders" was 1981 and E.T. was 1982.

I see this as more of a "project discussion" thread, not an "info and feedback" thread. I'd prefer to create a new thread when all 3 discs are finished, and have that stickied instead.

:: Edit - Zion/Jay, we do however need a sticky for the EditDroid set I feel.

Things you DID NOT like about Episode III
Time
*** Warning: Strong Language Below ***

Here's what I didn't like:

Digital "super-artoo".
If he had rocket boosters built into his legs, why the fuck did he need to be lifted into Luke's X-wing by crane? And the bit where he caught Obi-Wan's comlink really made me cringe.

Digital Yoda
Should be reported for false benefit claims - that's the most fraudulent use of a walking stick ever. Not only did the puppet Yoda look more convincing, it also didn't have such an annoying speech impediment either. Imagine the RotJ death scene; "Another... Skywalker... There... ... I s.". Fuck that shit.

Battle Droids
Might as well have had a big "off" switch on their backs for all the use they were. Just big piles of junk waiting to be lightsabred, not threatening at all.

General Grievous
Who?

That fucking lizard thing
OK I'll admit that Tauntauns in TESB looked a bit crap. But at least the scenes in which they appeared were kept to a minimum.

Chewbacca's appearance
What a fucking waste of time.

Anakin's turn to the dark side
If fear, hate and anger lead to the dark side, then it would make sense to cast an actor who can fucking act these emotions wouldn't it George?

Anakin/Padme romantic dialogue
*shudder*

Obi-Wan/Anakin fight
If they were such good friends, why didn't Obi-wan try and turn him back from the dark side?

Hayden in the Vader suit
Nope, just didn't work for me.

Scam download sites from Google ads
Time
First let me make it clear that I'm not complaining about the introduction of Google ads one bit. In fact I would encourage everyone to click a few ads every day to help Jay pay for the running costs of the site.

That being said, I did find this funny so thought I'd share. One of the ads looks like this:

and takes you to a site called FetchFlix.com, which provides

Unlimited 24/7 Downloads! No time limits, no bandwidth limits, no content limits! Download anything you want, any time you want. We even provide you with free movie download software!
Hmmm, lets take a look at the download software provided. That image looks familiar. Yup, right-click/properties shows the image filename as KLITEpg2_12.jpg!

Scream 2:
- "Oh please! By definition alone, sequels are inferior films!"
- "How about Empire Strikes Back. Improved graphics. Better storyline."
- "Not a sequel, part of a trilogy, completely planned."

Scream 3:
During Randy's taped message to Sydney, Dewey and Gale, he refers to the Star Wars trilogy. Carrie Fisher has a cameo in the movie as Bianca, the studio archive keeper.

Got me thinking: what other movies feature Star Wars references? There must be hundreds. So, as an exercise to demonstrate how much Star Wars has influenced popular culture (and because I'm feeling a bit geeky today) here's a few I can think of:

Spaceballs
Obvious one; the whole movie is a Star Wars spoof.

Chicken Run
When Rocky sees the pie-making machine for the first time, he exclaims "look at the size of that thing!"

Toy Story
Buzz makes reference to a weapon poised at the edge of the galaxy, with the destructive capacity to destroy an entire planet.

Toy Story 2
Emporer Zurg delivers the line "no, I am your father" Darth Vader style to Buzz.
Also several of the sound effects in the opening computer game sequence are lifted out of the Star Wars movies.

Back to the Future
When Marty dresses up as an alien to convince George to ask Lorraine out, he says his name is Darth Vader.

Gremlins
Some gremlins are seen playing the Atari Star Wars arcade game in the bar scene.

E.T.
Elliot shows ET his collection of Star Wars figures. Elsewhere in the film Michael imitates Yoda's voice.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Not an obvious one, but apparently Artoo and Threepio are depicted in some of the heirogliphics on the walls of the map room. (?)

Space Camp
That annoying little kid wanted to go into space because of the Star Wars movies.

Clerks
That famous dialogue where Randal explains to Dante how he didn't like the fact that all the innocent contractors working on Death Star 2 were killed when Lando destroyed it.

Reign of Fire
In the post-apocalyptic future world dominated by dragons, there are no cinemas or TV, so the elders entertain the children by acting out a scene from TESB.

The X Files Movie
One of the locations in the movie is Tatouine, Tunisia - which of course was the location used for filming the scenes on the planet Tatooine.

A modest proposal: Should Lucas make more OT changes?
Time
Originally posted by: Citizen
I have to agree, it should be digitally restored back to it's brilliance, the only minor changes I would make (if the end result was truly seamless) would be to a few special effects, removing the borders on the super-imposing (look at the foot on speeder bike pedal, tie fighters following the Millennium Falcon inside the death star etc.) and enhancing the lightsaber glow in ANH to match the other two films. Nothing drastic, just enhancing the 'reality' of the film's effects.
So, basically give it the same treatment that the Indiana Jones trilogy received for its DVD release? Sure, I'd agree with that, and I don't think there would be many complaints from SW fans. I mean, how many Indy fans want to see a DVD version complete with snake reflections?

OT/PT fan base demographic - with quotes from George
Time
Well, my 3-year old seems to prefer the OT. He refers to all the Star Wars films as "Green Man" - I suppose it's because Yoda has made an impression on him. Given a choice as to whether he wants to watch "Green man with boy in" (Ep. I) or "Green man with Luke in" (Ep. IV) he will always choose IV.

He's also watched parts of my laserdiscs (Big Green Man) but I don't think he appreciates that it's dubbed in French. He does however understand that Daddy has made Big Green Man into a little DBD, and he's waiting for me to do the same with Ep. V.

I am boycotting EpIII.
Time
I applaud your sentiments Warbler, and I am in agreement - Lucas is getting no more money from me. I made that decision halfway through watching AotC at the cinema. However I don't have your high moral standards, so I'm stealing RotS, just to see if it as crap as I am expecting it to be.

If I was less lethargic and I lived closer to London I'd have gone to Leicester Square and erected a big banner somewhere visible:

Han Shot First.

But I'd rather stay at home and work on my laserdisc rip.
