Backstroke of the West with retail DVD quality FINISHED & FULLY WORKING!! DOWNLOAD HERE!
If you don't know what Star War: The Third Gather: Backstroke of the West is all about, click here.

As suggested by ThatArtGuy, who also provided me with srt files, I have created a DVD with the Backstroke of the West subtitles. It has four subtitle options: 1. Original. 2. Backstroke V1 (F words) 3. Backstroke V2 (no F words). 4. a surprise subtitle track. There are menus with scene selections and one more surprise easter egg.

Since this project is not really considered a fan edit, it will never be availiable as a full download. For more details on why, read Q. 8b: here. So, I've created a kit and you will have to supply the NTSC R1 SWIII WS DVD. Others may work, but are untested. Included are full step by step instructions and everything you need in the rar file in the link at the bottom of this post.

What you'll need to supply:
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith official NTSC Region 1 DVD (WS or FS: FS not tested)
Program such as SmartRipper or PGCdemux to rip the video and audio from the DVD
A Windows compatible PC with probably a version of Windows XP and an NTFS file system (duh)
About 12gb free of HD space

optional:
DVD Shrink program if you need to compress the movie to fit onto a single layer DVD-R.
PowerDVD or similar program to watch/ preview the movie on your computer.
DVD burning program and blank DVD if you want to actually make a DVD of this. (duh again)

Please let me know what you guys think of this!

Here it is: Backstroke of the West kit

The menus are 16x9 and when the DVD is created by the user, it is recognized by Clone DVD and DVD shrink so we can all shrink this puppy down to fit a DVD-5.

The download link has been updated to so that everything should work exactly as I intended now. Let me know how this turns out for everyone and if problems persist.

I suggest to rip the DVD, use SmartRippper.

If ypu have the DVD in your DVD-Rom drive, it will try to read it. It may say something about files being locked. If so, use PowerDVD (or whatever software player you have) to play the movie or a few seconds first. What I usually do is just play it and then skip around a few chapters and stuff. Smartripper should automatically find the main movie on the disc. If not, it's Title 7, program chain 1. Click on "Stream processing". Click on "none" to deselect all files on the next screen. Click the check box next to "VIDEO NTSC" and change the little selector to "demux to extra file". Do the same thing for the second audio track (English AC3 2ch). Change the target folder to your demuxed folder. Click on Start. (Start will not appear if you don't have enough HD space.)

You should end up with an ac3 audio file and and m2v video file, as well as some blank vob files and stuff. Use these m2v and ac3 files and then use the instructions provided in the download "kit".

As for a few concerns people have addressed, I didn't notice any of the subtitles going by too fast, and if so, they are like that in the original version, I haven't changed this.

The "resume" button is funny. I should have included a way to go back to the main menu. It only works if the movie has already been played, at which point it will resume form that place when the resume button is used.

A GREAT cover has been made by Ell the Ewok and Erikstormtrooper:
Erikstormtrooper: I shamelessly stole Ell the Ewok's original Backstroke cover and changed up the back. I added an Engrish synopsis, and provided info so that this is now specific to marioxb's conversion kit.

Which you can download a hi-res version here. The cover is also included in the Backstroke of the West Kit.

In Backstroke, "Lock onto him, R2" corresponds to "Target, teacher". The timing on the crawl is incredibly erratic, so I wouldn't try to fix that up too much.

For a font, I think it's funnier if it's played straight. Just make the subtitles look like a typical DVD subtitle track. And please, do not censor the language.
If you want to contact me, please, please email me. My PMs are turned off because I just plain don't like dealing in PM space. If you email me at reverendbeastly AT gmail DOT com, I will respond swiftly. Thanks!

Oh thank god someone is working on this. I tried to sync up the subtitles myself a couple months ago but I didn't have the patience... Good luck with the project!
But I was going to go to tosche station to pick up some power converters!

Thanks for taking this project on mario! I know there are a lot of people out there, including myself, that would love to see this happen. And you can bet a lot of fan editors would love to add these to their DVD thanks to you.

As for a font, I think something plain like the regular subs would be funny enough. Almost like no thought was put into it at all, much like most of the sub dialogue itself.

Could there be an alternate sub-title menu for this? I would love to see a version without all the swears in it.

Also, I wonder how difficult it would be to take this concept and make it into a six movie set?

Being an adult, and living in a country where we can watch "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" without any edits for language on regular TV in primetime, I don't want the subs Bowdlerized. But I see Sluggo's point: it would be nice to have the option for something cleaned up. What I think would be uncool would be to have only a non-swear version!

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how you clean up "R2! Do you is fcuking!"?

OR better yet, let's see someone do Backstroke Of The West with overdubs, in faux Chinese approximations of American accents, reading the subtitles. Think Kung-Fu films, but Star Wars.

That, my friends, would be deep-fried gold.

You mean "afoot".

I'd love to see this as well. It might prove to make ROTS an enjoyable viewing experience.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They're certainly beyond any repair you're capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren't one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can't say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won't suck as much as a fan edit.

What about someone (I don't know how to) making an actual crawl for "Star War: The Third Gathers: The Backstroke of the West"

It will have three subtitle tracks, one of which replaces the f word with "poop", and of course the retail subs. (I guess in Chinese the f word and the word for "do" are similar.)

Sucking, thucking, mucking, thumping, bumping. Thucking is just funny to me because the HS rules would not allow you to say the f word (we were performing Python's Dead Parrot Sketch on stage) but I could get away with "thucking".

Or as I did, I guess, "R2! Do you is pooping!"

Almost done! I should have a kit with instructions so everyone can make their own DVDs using their own copies of the retail release of Episode III, released tomorrow!

Looking forward to it! Can't wait to have an excuse to finally pull out the ROTS DVD. It's been sitting on my shelf in the plastic since I bought it.

Uh.... good question. I don't know. #1- there is no reason anyone should have a fullscreen version, but yeah it will probably work. I'll test it out on some other fullscreen movie I have to be sure. I don't see any reason why the NTSC full and wide versions would be any different- timing wise, but I can make sure the subtitles will be in frame and stuff. As for PAL, is there any easy way to change the frame rate of a subtitle file? Maybe if I had a copy of an srt file from the PAL DVD I could work something up. Now I must sleep. Just got off work and very tired..

Just wait a little longer. It still works, I just tested it.

And please, when people start getting this completed, can someone help me figure out how to shrink this puppy down from 5.78GB to fit on a single layer? DVD shrink won't work for some reason, and I don't wanna pay for clone dvd.

Also, could some kind souls help me finish getting Star Wars Heroes and Villians from myspleen? Stuck at 95.4%! 5.6 freakin percent, c'mon!

EDIT! Got it! Thanks people!

marioxb,

Thanks for doing this so much. I can't wait to make my own disc. Two questions:

1) Why do you recommend Windows XP? Is there a reason Windows 2000 with NTFS wouldn't work?

2) What happens when you try to use DVD shrink? I've never seen it not work with any disc or files.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

2000 should work fine - it's just that many people don't use it.

And DVDShrink will shrink the 2-hour film to one SL DVD quite easily. You should be able to load the files as they are on the hard-drive, and then set compression to automatic.
