Yes. It's H.264, so you'll need QT7. Interestingly, VLC plays the video but not audio.
I also get video and no audio using Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 with ffdshow.

I know the following contributions might not be great, but maybe you can find something worthwhile in them...

ComingSoon has an MP3 of Mark Hamill talking about Lucas' supposed plans for a sequel trilogy (this is his idea from the 80's - not now). That can be found on this page. I'm not sure if the link will still work, if not let me know and I can dig up my downloaded copy (maybe).

The Q&A sessions that the above comments were taken from is described at length in a 4 part text feature (with quotes). You can read that by going to part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4. The first page links to an mp3 with comments from Lowry and Jim Ward on the film restoration and possible screenings respectively.

All of the above is regarding a Q&A session that took place shortly before the release of the 2004 DVDs. The mp3s are only extracts but perhaps some of the quoted text might be useful. For example, there's a bit towards the end where Kershner is asked if he was ever considered as director for ROTJ.

EDIT: I've just discovered that the links to the MP3s no longer work. If you'd like these mp3s (I know for certain I have the Mark Hamill one somewhere - not sure about the other one though) then please let me know and I'll start searching. Who knows, I may even find some other material that could be of some use.

I seem to remember those files are of pretty poor quality anyway. Thanks for the heads up though.

EDIT - I have just found another site hosting one of the Hamill files, and yeah, it's pretty unusable (poorly recorded at the time).

Shame

BTW folks - My blog is now looking better. Both the trailers are available there using youtube, so head over there if you had problems viewing the h.264 version.

Jambe:

Did you see my previous post about Fett footage? See below:

Jambe, a while back a guy who happened to make his way out to the desert skiff set of ROTJ posted some short clips of footage he managed to grab from behind the fence of the Boba Fett backpack scene being worked on. Do you have any use for these 'unauthorized' behind the scenes clips? There's a few still photos from this as well.

Does ANYONE have the NBC Star Wars Time & Again which aired a few years ago? It has some great interview footage from around the time of the films' releases. I have a crappy 'off air' copy but it's next pretty much unusable.

Also, there are some interviews over at UGO with some 'Jedi' crew members. Does anyone have a contact over there?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S Head over to Youtube and help boost the rating of my 'Returning' trailer

Here's one outtake that sticks in my mind:
Before boarding Jabba's sail barge to travel to the Sarlacc pit, that little muppet thing (*) asks "Anyone know what the in-flight movie is? I hope it's Raiders!"
I remember this from a TV documentary I saw years ago, but have no idea what it was. Do you have it?

(*) Salacious B. Crumb. Lost 10 points off my geek-o-meter because I had to look it up.

Yeah it was Tim Rose operating Crumb in 'Star Wars to Jedi'. They are actually on their way to Elstree from ILM, flying on a Pan Am 747! It will make an appearance...somewhere.

Good News - I have a couple of Jedi crew members interested in doing interviews for 'Returning'. I am not sure if they will be audio or written interviews yet, but they will be included...somehow.

That was one of the first things I put in there. Being an avid action figure collector as a kid I always wondered why 'Luke Jedi Knight' has a blue saber. Then years later I saw the trailers.

Hi - new to this forum, but have seen Building Empire & I really admire your work. I have a couple of items that you may want to include somewhere in the edit of Jedi.

I have the original lightsaber fired from R2-D2 on the Sailbarge, it's the one used on April 23rd 1982 as they wrapped shooting on the location sailbarge set. It's used in both closeups, although the first closeup was shot later after the top of the saber received some damage from aborted shots. It's also the one shown flying through the air, though not of course the one Luke catches.

But more interesting from your point of view, I have the original gadget hero saber used (yes - used, & yes - original) on the lost shots of Luke in the cave building his saber and inserting it into R2's head in November that year.

I don't know if these items are of interest to you, or if you can include them in the project, but if you want to then you'd be welcome.

wow.

EDIT

Is the lightsaber from the cave sequence dis-assembled, as if Luke is still building it? And does this finally confirm that the sequence was 100% shot? I mean i know there was music scored for it but this is cool as well.

Zombie - the cave saber opens out in 3 sections to about 41cm to show some "internal workings", it then telescopes shut in one smooth action with a very satisfying "whoosh" from some cleverly built pistons to then be identical to the classic ROTJ saber, in that state it can even be belt hung (not that you ever would !!!!!).

It's a lovely piece of engineering.

From what I've been told , this scene was shot on location and also in the studio for later compositing, but I'm told the footage has been destryed - a terrible shame, but I'm not giving up hope!

Well this is a truely amazing bit of detail--thanks for illuminating a little bit more of this unknown bit of Star Wars trivia.

Would be cool to maybe make a neat video of the saber to show how it opens up and collapses to get a better sense of the visuals of the scene.

And that is a shame if the scene is lost forever. It was completed and edit because there was music scored for it, which is available on the uncut RTOJ SE 2-disk release. Very surprising that something this major could have been thrown away. There are, as far as i know of, no production still of any kind for this sequence, only a storyboard. So this lightsaber is the only physical proof of the scenes existance! jeez...

The video idea is a great idea. In theory, you could almost recreate the scene if you had a black cloak (that would hide the actor) and a nice stone tabletop - oh, and an R2 head to stick it in. As long as it didn't look too fan-filmy, it could turn out neat.

Unfortunately, footage like this probably wouldn't have held any value at the time - these days everything is kept (and sometimes to rediculous lengths) because everyone knows a DVD will be made and they can get extra mileage out of it, but way back when, no value was attached other than for the crew to have a laugh, so i guess it's more luck than judgement that we have as much as we have!

I'm going to have a word with a couple of collegues tomorrow to see what we can come up with to shoot the saber in action but without making it look cheesy so I'll keep you informed...

This is certainly a fantastic artifact, especially to those of us interested in the cut scenes.

I'd love to have some images of this saber for starwarscutscenes.com - drop me a line at 'skotk at hotmail dot com' if you're interested in having that on the site. I already have some of what little is available there: the matte painting featuring the hillside cave and the ships parked below, and one of the storyboard images. T'bone has a bit more on his site at starwarz.com as well.

I'm still hoping at least something else will show up from this scene - some footage, or at least a production still. Seems Hyperspace ought to have been able to cough up something, but no dice on that.

The film isn't dead. Not yet. The only footage George would destroy is his own negatives for the SE's. Lost the footage? Maybe. Destroyed it. No way.

Recreating this footage would be awesome.
