I don’t know where you’re going with this, but the way i’m seeing it:

Tony Gilroy calling Andor “the most important work I’ve ever done” isn’t a dig at other Star Wars shows or a signal that it’s merely a political stunt. It’s an admission of how deeply he invested in its storytelling—from the moral complexity of rebellion to the echoes of past (and some current) authoritarianism—and how that creative challenge has meant more to him personally and professionally than anything else he’s made. In short, he’s celebrating its narrative ambition and real historic resonance, not turning it into a gender-politics spectacle or a stage for some unknowns to shout out chants of their personal conflics and goals in life. It’s just a bunch of people collectively going in on one goal; a good fucking story.

Him and his team are literally re-telling WW2 Nazi Germany in space, but unlike George’s Star Wars it isn’t just on surface level - it’s digging deep, hence the emotional and historical resonance he must’ve felt writing it.

Genuine question, but is it literally just gender stuff where that line is drawn for you? Like if it’s rhetoric about “women empowerment” or whatever, that’s too political? But any other political themes are fair game? Even as just a send-up to history, you have to realize Gilroy is working on this stuff as cyclical and resonant to contemporary context.

That’s how any of this works as well as it does, it’s rooted in real and relevant things we can feel, even if you don’t have the tools to articulate it, or just choose not to. Fascism and authoritarianism describe phenomena, and function through theory that has been worked out academically for decades. They aren’t just something that popped out in WWII Nazi Germany once in history and never happened again.

This thread is dedicated to discussing and reviewing Andor, where I’ve shared my genuine appreciation and my relief that everything—from performances to promotional materials—remains focused on the story itself. It’s astonishing that this simple point has been missed amid your well-turned phrases. And yes, that was a compliment - you sure know how to write, you just can’t seperate what you write and believe in from being opinions to educational masterpieces.

If you’d rather have a battle of wits and political beliefs, send me a private message. Ever since I argued - about three years ago now - that Star Wars needed to dial back on its gender-politics emphasis and “this actor wants to change the world from this to this”, you’ve persistently tried to bait me into derailing my original review or critique - with you obviously getting triggered behind walls of text because it contradicted your belief system.

You’re probably a great person - non-binary, a guy, a girl - whatever you are, i really don’t care - but you gotta let is rest, dude. Oh my. Let it rest. My screen is bleeding through with whatever it is that angers you so much.

Anyway, I’ll keep on being me and you keep on being you - different people, different beliefs - and hopefully both in the end good people. But this is the last time I’m ever going to let you derail my views and thoughts into some meaningless battle of wits.

You’re not being apolitical, is all I want you to realize. To bring it back to the show, does Perrin’s pursuit of joy and complacency with all that is “tedious”, “boring and sad” in the galaxy not still enable the Empire? This is one of the ways I am talking about Andor as still contemporaneously resonant. He is doing your whole bit, but even less malciously. At least he doesn’t believe in anything.

You are spouting an agenda by pushing the idea that others have an agenda, that Disney has some kind of earnest (and not profit driven) political interest in “changing the world”. They make ads for toys and merchandise. You haven’t triggered me or challenged any belief system I have because it’s just not that deep for me.

If you want to talk about the show, this show, I’d just prefer we all engage with it and what it’s doing fully, instead of silo-ing off topics of conversation and ideas just because of whatever you want to believe about other showrunners or Kathleen Kennedy. You literally have demonstrated time and again ignorance to how any of this works or has worked, clung to very specific, disproven narratives - and then hide behind it being an opinion with everyone else just out to get you because of politics. I just want us to be able to talk about Gilroy’s influences openly.

So, when the Empire investigates what happened on Mina-Rau…

  • Are they going to be able to recognize Brasso as being involved in the Ferrix funeral riot?

  • Are they going to recognize B2EMO as the droid that projected the speech on Ferrix?

  • Are they going to find all their guns?

  • Are they going to find their radio?

  • The appearance of the stolen TIE-Avenger prototype will surely draw attention. Does the Empire know it was Cassian that stole it?

It is a “political” show in that it explores what authoritarian governments can be like, in a way that isn’t just applicable to a 1930s German political party. It can also be broadly applied to anyone who abuses power, and to the Foucault-like nature of modern life structured around disciplinary institutions and prisons. This is why it’s widely appreciated and not seen as “political” in the sense of being propaganda purely aimed at people living in the 2020s. Whether centered around Orange Man or any other issues.

However like I said before there is an exception to this now, with the illegal undocumented immigrants parts. For me it has a pass for now but that’s strike one.

I thought everything was really tastefully done including the one scene with Bix, except for the over the top references to undocumented illegal alien farm workers. I get that that kind of thing could happen because the Empire is full of oppressive busybodies who love getting people in trouble for paperwork, but I think the implication that that’s an analogous situation to the US is kind of crass.

I don’t believe it is analogous situation just with the US - many of us in UK & Europe are well aware of what has been taking place in relation to long reliance of undocumented food workers (in the fields / and in restaurants / and in effect the larger ‘gig’ economy; that authorities have previously acknowledged and turned a blind eye to in the main - and yet also eager to clamp down on a whim). In the UK’s case, all the way back to Brexit and the resulting fallout from that. I can’t speak for other areas around the world - I don’t know enough about that; though I wouldn’t be surprised if people across the planet the planet… recognise what is going on in the farm field scenes… and correlate with their own similar issues in relation to the treatment of undocumented workers or refugees simply looking for safe shelter, work, and place to start a new life - and looking to integrate and contribute to that place.

Edit: Diego Luna (at SW•com) - 'As for some of the other characters audiences grew to love during Andor’s first season, Bix Caleen, Brasso, Wilmon Paak, and B2EMO made a new life for themselves and found a little happiness despite everything they endured at the hands of the Empire.

“These characters find a way to start all over again,” remarks Luna. “The Empire has taught these people to leave everything behind, and even through how painful that can be, it’s about sticking together, moving together, and making sure they take care of each other. I think this season is a lot about family, and what family means. We’re telling the story of a revolutionary, and to understand why he keeps going, why he keeps fighting, we have to understand what he loses on the way, on the journey.”

When the Empire closes in on his friends, the situation spirals out of control and Cassian suffers another major loss, affecting the future rebel leader. (And us.)

“Now he’s not just fighting for Maarva; he’s fighting for Brasso,” Luna says. “Behind every war, there’s loss. So, he’s going to fight until the end, because he has this responsibility to his family.”’

Andor filmed from November 2022 to February 2024 (with gaps for the strikes) - before the US election in November 2024; and the resulting the re-election of convicted felon and rapist ‘Orange Man’ who you refer to in a later post.

Now, if the actor who played the Imperial officer who attempted to rape Bix had weird combed-over ginger hair and couldn’t complete his dialogue without including outrageous falsehoods or trailing off into incoherence in an attempt to deflect away from answering questions or his actions… we all may have been having a different conversation. 👍

Credit to everyone involved in the handling of the scene with Bix; not just the tone, content and writing - but also the stunt-work, editing and both the actors. The actor/stuntman who played the Imperial officer really hit it out of the park in adding to the realism of the scene (plus him being dazed and concussed - losing control of his faculties and bouncing off the scenery like that really added to it). Adria Arjona was superb - which is no surprise given the quality of her performances throughout the show (like so many other top talents in this series).

It’s still not a situation that’s analogous. A galaxy with countless inhabitable planets and high amounts of automation is much different from the real world in terms of what that would mean for border security and the economics of farming.

My main issue with it is that the Empire controls both whichever planet they came from, and the farm planet. Obviously they don’t want to let slip that they’re from Ferrix (which is a different problem than someone entering the US from Mexico, for instance) but it doesn’t really matter what planet they’re from because the Empire controls the whole galaxy. If they’re legally imperial citizens then they would hypothetically be able to go to any planet available to the public. If someone wants to voluntarily go work on a farm on a dedicated farm planet, go ahead, knock your socks off. It would be like someone moving between states in the US or cities in the UK or what have you. It’s completely different from citizens of other countries crossing over the borders of the US or UK.

The main reason the Empire would implement visas and such would be for monitoring purposes. They want to know who’s going where and keep track of them in case some of them are criminals or rebels. While this is one aspect of immigration law (a legitimate one) it doesn’t make sense to drag the farming labor stuff into it.

We have to import people from other planets because the lazy natives don’t want to do the work! Okay, what natives? It’s completely empty except for the people you already brought here from other planets. There’s no language barrier. There’s no ethnic issues. There’s no species issues since they’re all pretty much human. There’s not really any hugely significant cultural differences because the galaxy is already highly interconnected through space travel. There’s no state infrastructure or healthcare services they’re taking up that they wouldn’t be taking up somewhere else in the same Empire.

This is why it feels so jarring and out of place. They’re not really “undocumented” illegal in the real world sense at all. They moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana and didn’t update their stuff at the local DMV because they would get flagged by the cops for fleeing a crime scene. They didn’t move from Venezuela to Indiana and ignore the green card process because they had to find a below minimum-wage job.

Good to know you have TDS.

Andor’ Showrunner Reveals Season 2 Secrets and Why Writing Darth Vader Is ‘Limiting’’…

Andor has political themes, but let’s be real, we’re here for Star Wars. If we were interested in hearing endless complaints about Trump, we could go to literally any other website on the internet. It’s getting old. He won the election fair and square, and that’s the system we have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I feel like partisan politics should be where the line is drawn, sure, but regardless of conservative, liberal, leftist, anarchist, etc. we are an imperial core as The West (if that’s where you are), comfortably watching a Disney+ show and having time to bullshit on the internet about Star Wars. It’s not like the previous administration in America isn’t just as complicit in war crimes and more. Andor is political, but not as a pseudo-campaign piece for a specific political party. What’s left of Maya Pei’s group are depicted as idiots, and they’re basically infighting radicals. No one but the structure of “Empire” is being singled out here as the galaxy’s evil. And no one is a clean-handed paragon of virtue.

To equate the stuff in Andor to one president or to “belief systems” or specific modern analogy is missing the point. It’s like Gilroy says, he’s writing from history, but we don’t learn history as trivia. There are mechanics, theory, cyclical patterns that we’re supposed to be able to recognize - and as a society, ideally work to avoid happening again. Recognizing fascism means recognizing all of its forms, and pretending that doesn’t exist intentionally inside of a work would be to miss out on half of what makes the show so good.

To an earlier point and hopefully this brings us back on track, is The Empire supposed to be one nation/country? @Vladius

In Andor alone, there’s Corporate Zones (PreMor) and Ghorman having their own autonomy, but we also know there are places like Hutt Space, like Bespin before ESB. It feels like the set up here is something sort of like the European Union. It’s not a perfect analogy because again, that’s not the point, but it does have valences in how cultural hegemony can often be understood as an iteration on imperialism. It’s how you can have all the ways the Empire is the Nazis - but also tackle the nuanced ways a modern western power slips into fascism all the same. The Empire is parabolic composite of all empire

Man, I love this guy. I have immense admiration for him: he not only grasps the depth of his universe and breathes life into his storytelling, but also embodies the art of filmmaking — seamlessly fusing these three pillars into a truly fulfilling experience for everyone involved and for the audience.

I’m not going to find myself interested in anything Star Wars-related for a long time after this (i saw the upcoming projects recently and nearly fell asleep), but if this guy was to be hired for a Star Wars movie set between ROTJ and TFA or something… i’d buy popcorn 4 years in advance. Or, when I think about it, maybe not 4 years with Disney’s history of firing directors. Heuheu.

There’s a little more about the device (and the highly volatile fuel ‘rhydonium’) here, mate:-

www.gamesradar.com/entertainment/star-wars-tv-shows/what-are-saw-and-wilmon-using-in-andor-season-2-rhydonium-in-star-wars-explained

I took it as the device being an old, complex and dangerous way of allowing fuel for engines or machinery to be used in certain areas and environments of the galaxy. Differing planets or systems requiring differing mixes or combinations / configurations of fuel purities to work… or for it not become unstable… and then exploding (which is why the other engineer claimed it would be a lot easier if they knew where they were going - as it would mean far fewer configurations to remember / less chance of making a mistake and blowing up).

Though I’m probably wrong on that.

Season 2 thoughts after 6 episodes…

I find Forrest Whittaker’s performance as Saw endlessly engaging to watch. Every scene with him in is unexpected gold. The same goes for Ben Mendelsohn’s Krennic and to a slightly lesser degree Skarsgard as Rael.

The stellar dramatic performances and nuanced script are what is keeping Andor Season 2 afloat, but I wish there were just one or two action set pieces to add excitement and rewatchability (like we had with the Aldhani Heist, Narkina 5 prison breakout or Ferrix riot in Season 1).

Personally, I didn’t need to see repeated scenes of Bix moping around getting high in the safehouse - I understood what her state of mind was without that repetition. I would have preferred that instead they elaborated on her and Cassian’s infiltration to assassinate Dr Gorst - that could have been the exciting set piece which ended the episode 4-6 arc. But that’s just me, and I trust Gilroy knows what he is doing (and hopefully we will get some of that hi-octane action pay off in the remaining episodes).
