How Star Wars Brought Force Ghosts To Life In The Time Before CGI

www.slashfilm.com/1384686/star-wars-pre-cgi-force-ghost-special-effects

'In John Phillip Peecher’s “Star Wars – The Making of ‘Return of the Jedi,’” Howard Kazanjian, who produced all three Original Trilogy installments (as well as "Raiders of the Lost Ark), spilled the beans on the Force ghost process, and how it changed from “The Empire Strikes Back” to “Return of the Jedi.”

For “Empire,” Sir Alec was placed in front of a black velvet background, where he delivered his lines without another actor present. “The aura was then added to his image, and this film was composited together with the film of Mark,” said Kazanjian. Alec wasn’t a fan of this approach. As Kazanjian observed, “[I]t’s awfully hard to get into the scene and deliver your lines to another actor who isn’t even there.” This is, of course, commonplace now in the age of CG-laden blockbusters, where characters and whole environments are added in post-production, but at the time, for the classically trained Sir Alec, this held zero appeal.

When it came time to shoot Sir Alex’s scenes for “Return of the Jedi,” the filmmakers made sure the legendary British actor would be able to perform on an actual set with actual people (namely Mark Hamill). This meant they had to tweak the Force ghost filming process a tad. According to Kazanjian, they did so thusly:

“In order to have Sir Alec and Mark in the same scene and still be able to add the shimmer to Ben Kenobi’s image — remember, he isn’t actually ‘alive’ in these scenes — we had to do certain shots with the VistaVision camera. The VistaVision film will give us a rock-steady image to work with later. Shooting this scene as one normally does also meant that Sir Alec couldn’t touch Mark or cross in front of him, because we don’t want the shimmer, when it’s added, to overlap onto Mark. It’s more difficult to add the shimmer in the lab, but we think that the performances will more than make up for the extra trouble.”

‘Yes, VistaVision! The widescreen 35mm format invented by Paramount in 1954, shown off to dizzyingly gorgeous effect in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” proved incredibly helpful to the “Star Wars” FX wizards throughout the shooting of the original trilogy. Though Paramount abandoned the format in 1961, the VistaVision camera proved integral to the shooting of the series’ groundbreaking optical effects. Not to be all fogeyish (but yes, to be all fogeyish), it was so much fun to get under the hood of these pre-CG movies. It might’ve been a pain in the tuchus to make them (George Lucas would certainly agree), but this handmade quality beats ones-and-zeroes every time.’

C-3PO’s head, ‘Titanic’ costumes for sale at Propstore film auction - at Reuters

'More than 1,800 items are being sold by entertainment memorabilia auctioneer Propstore at its annual live auction, which this year runs from Nov. 9-12.

Leading the sale, which Propstore estimates will fetch more than 12 million pounds (14.6 million), is the light-up head actor Anthony Daniels wore to play C-3PO in “Star Wars: A New Hope”, with an estimate of 500,000 - 1 million pounds ($600,000- $1.2 million).

Daniels is also selling other “Star Wars” memorabilia.

“We have his complete archive from his time of working on the ‘Star Wars’ films so that includes some of the props and body components and parts, his head, his hands, his feet,” Propstore founder and Chief Executive Stephen Lane told Reuters.

“We have his original scripts with the annotations in there as well.”

Costumes for sale include a shirt, waistcoat and trousers DiCaprio wore in “Titanic” (100,000 - 200,000 pounds), Honey Ryder’s bathrobe as worn by Ursula Andress in “Dr. No” (70,000-140,000 pounds) and Johnny Depp’s stunt costume from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (50,000-100,000 pounds).

Props include Harrison Ford’s bull whip from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (100,000-200,000 pounds), “Nightmare on Elm Street” character Freddy Krueger’s hero metal glove armature and hand-drawn schematic (200,000-400,000 pounds) and Tom Hanks’ sneakers from “Forrest Gump” (15,000-30,000 pounds).

Other lots include Stanley Kubrick’s hand-annotated shooting script for “The Shining” (30,000-60,000 pounds) and a coat worn by Marlon Brando in “The Godfather” (25,000-50,000 pounds).

Lane said the lots came from collectors, curators, archives, film studios and production companies.

“The demand is growing and we’re seeing things travel all over the world…and they’re bought by passionate fans and lovers of the movies, collectors,” he said. “But some of these items also end up in museums and studio archives as well.”’

Every C-3PO Costume Explained By Anthony Daniels | WIRED - a 50 minute video at Wired, from 2020.

‘Anthony Daniels, who most famously portrays C-3PO in the Star Wars series of films, sits down with WIRED to discuss, in detail, the variety of costumes he has worn while filming Star Wars. Anthony explains just how he was able to fit into the costume and what his thoughts were when he first saw Ralph McQuarrie’s designs.’

I thought that was a crazy amount of money for a Threepio head, but then I just saw this:

Star Wars’ Long-Lost “Missing X-Wing” Sells For $3,135,000 - at ScreenRant

‘The Red Squadron Leader’s X-wing has been an important missing piece of Star Wars history for years, and now it’s just been sold for $3.13 million.’

'An important piece of Star Wars history is the long-lost X-wing of Red Squadron Leader as seen in A New Hope, and now it’s just been sold for $3,135,000. The miniature has been considered “long-lost” for years as one of the original four miniature models created for the infamous battle scene of the Rebel Alliance versus the Empire over the Death Star in A New Hope. This scene is not only known for its impact on the Star Wars franchise, but also on the way movies are made today, paving the way for the creations of miniatures in addition to bringing the iconic X-wing look to life. Now, it’s been located after many years, and it’s proven to be worth a fortune.

The Red Squadron Leader’s X-wing miniature has just been sold at Heritage Auctions for $3,135,000, its single red stripe confirming it to be the long-lost piece of history. The model was found with the late Oscar-winning miniature-maker Greg Jein, and it’s said to be just as valuable to visual effects as the infamous ruby red slippers of Dorothy. The miniature was a part of the trench battle of the Death Star and has capabilities that include locking its S-foils into attack position.’

Joe Johnston says there will be a “Light and Magic” Season 2 documentary in the video below:

32Ten Studios: The final day - a 6 minute video at Fantha Tracks

"32Ten Studios, the former home of the George Lucas Theater and the ILM Model and Practical Effects Shop closed its doors for the final time on 1st October. An historic location in the long storied history of Industrial Light & Magic, its closure marked the end of a chapter that saw the visual effects for much of the original trilogy and a slew of classic 80’s and 90’s blockbusters created within its four walls.

Star Wars Celebration Collecting Track organiser and Star Wars archivist Gus Lopez was there to document the final gathering of ILM crew old and new."

STAR WARS (ANANGONG MIIGAADING), A NEW HOPE: An Ojibwe Version to Become Only Second Indigenous Version of Franchise Starter

https://screenanarchy.com/2023/12/star-wars-anangong-miigaading-a-new-hope.html

'A cool bit of news for Star Wars fans here in Canada. The Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council (DOTC) and the University of Manitoba announced today that they have an alliance with Disney/Lucasfilm to create an official Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) version of Star Wars: A New Hope.

The spark of this project began in 2021, when Dougald Lamont, former Member of the Legislative Assembly for St. Boniface, reached out to Pablo Hidalgo, a former Winnipegger and Lucasfilm executive, to see whether it would be possible to get Star Wars officially translated into an Indigenous language.

“I thought if Star Wars could be translated into Navajo, they might be interested in doing another language as well,” said Dougald Lamont. “And while I’ve never met Pablo Hidalgo, Winnipeg being Winnipeg, we have several friends in common, so I e-mailed him. A couple of weeks later, I got an e-mail back from Michael Kohn. I was over the moon – over two moons! I immediately reached out to another friend and Star Wars fan, Maeengan Linklater at DOTC, and that got the ball rolling.”

A New Hope has been translated and localized into more than 50 languages. This new version joins the Navjo version created in 2013 as the only Indigenous language versions of Star Wars films.’

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas

Rare Star Wars Jawa figure found in loft sells for £19,500

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-68118326

'An “exceptionally rare” Star Wars figure found in a loft has outstripped its estimate after attracting worldwide interest at auction.

The Jawa character, complete with vinyl cape, is considered the “holy grail” of 1970s Star Wars figures, according to auctioneer Jonathan Torode.

It was snapped up by a UK collector for £19,500 during the Hertfordshire sale.

“I feel honoured to have handled another rare part of Star Wars toy history,” Mr Torode said.

“The Jawa figure is still the absolute ultimate for Star Wars collectors.”

It was the second time in six months that Excalibur Auctions, of Kings Langley, was able to show off such a sought-after collectible.

In July, it sold an identical Jawa figure for £26,670, including commission charges, after it was found by the same owner among memorabilia packed away in boxes.

Each figure was estimated to attain £10,000 to £15,000.

The figure owner, who worked for Marvel UK between 1974 and 1979, received a range of gifts from the UK toy company Palitoy during the promotion of the Star Wars line in Marvel comics.

Only 10 to 15 examples of this type of figure were documented, Excalibur Auctions said, with the vinyl cape substituted for a cloth cape not long into production.’

Wow! £19,500 is around US$24,900, or €23,000

Lieutenant Renz Actor Barrie Holland Dies, Aged 85 (in December 2023)

and https://starwarsaficionado.blogspot.com/2023/12/goodbye-barrie-holland.html

'Sad news for the end of the year, and the closing celebrations of Return of the Jedi’s landmark 30th Anniversary, as the announcement was made today of British background artist legend and cult favourite Barrie Holland’s passing, at the age of 85. Holland played the now legendary Jedi Imperial figure Lt. Renz, who captured Han and Leia inside the Imperial Shield Generator bunker on Endor and delivered to them the classic, nay infamous, line that was, “You rebel scum!” Though his voiced line was later dubbed in post production, it was nonetheless a moment that the artiste was thrilled to do and which enjoyed an hilarious on-set response from Harrison Ford in one classic 1982 scene outtake that surfaced onto Blu-ray in 2011.

Star Wars icon Michael Culver dies aged 85 after tragic health battles - article at Mirror

Star Wars actor Michael Culver has died following a lengthy health battle his agents have confirmed, following an impressive career spanning over five decades.

Star Wars actor Michael Culver has died, aged 85.

In a statement, his agent said: "We are very sad to confirm the passing of our friend and client Michael Culver. A career spanning over 50 years with notable roles in Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army and of course one of the most memorable death scenes in the Star Wars franchise.

"Michael largely gave up acting in the early 2000’s to concentrate his efforts into his political activism. It’s been an honor to have represented Michael for for the last decade and to have taken him to some of the best Star Wars events in the UK and Europe. A real highlight was taking Michael to Celebration in Chicago in 2019. He was lost for words when he saw his queue line with nearly 200 people waiting to see him.

“We worked with Michael just 3 weeks ago at his last home signing with our friends at Elite Signatures. Michael died on Tuesday 27th February at the age of 85. We miss him.”

Star Wars actor Anthony Daniels C-3PO head sold at auction for a mind-blowing $850k price!!! - at TMZ

'Anthony Daniels is making a fortune off his “Star Wars” trinkets … selling off a C-3PO head from ‘Return of the Jedi’ for enough cash to satiate even Han Solo himself.

The actor sold off the prop for $843,750 Tuesday through Propstore Auction – a popular site for fanboys and fangirls to buy their favorite movie and TV super collectibles.

Propstore says the head matches several scenes from the film, and it was the only head still in a private collection before it was sold – as of yet, it’s still unclear exactly who bought it.

The fiberglass head – made up of three components – still lights up … so the lucky mystery buyer’s got a pretty dang cool new addition to what we imagine is already a stacked “Star Wars” collection.

As for why he’s selling … Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter last week all his ‘Star Wars’ stuff’s just gathering dust in boxes and cupboards – and he’d rather it go on display or to someone who might really enjoy it.

The head wasn’t the only thing Daniels put up for auction either … he also sold a custom Pittsburgh Penguins hockey jersey given to him by the team after he participated in a charity event as well as a gingerbread cookie given to him on his last day of shooting ‘The Last Jedi,’ among other wild items.’

Was it made of actual gold?! That is one hell of a lot of money.

Star Wars action figure sells for record $525,000 at auction - article at Guinness World Records

'A rare Boba Fett action figure has been sold for $525,000 (£411,000), becoming the world’s most valuable Star Wars action figure.

The hand-painted, missile-firing model is one of only two still in existence. They were produced in 1979 but never released due to being deemed a choking hazard.

Sold at Heritage Auctions’ Star Wars Signature Auction, it more than doubled the previous record of $236,000 (£185,000) paid for a different rocket-firing Boba Fett in 2022.

It also exceeded the price paid for the world’s most expensive Barbie doll, a one-of-a-kind model wearing a one-carat diamond which was sold in 2010 for $302,500 (then approximately £192,000).’

There is more information in the linked article above.

For that price I hope the rocket on the back-pack still fires!

The original Empire Strikes Back being released and preserved should be dedicated to him, Jason Wingreen, and Jeremy Bulloch. But Lucas will never allow it. 2030 will be the 50th anniversary. It’s almost criminal the 20th anniversary happened in 2020 with little to no fanfare and no film.
