There should be a proper release of the 1977 Star Wars at this point

If Disney won’t release every Star Wars movie without any changes, this is the least they can do. The 2006 DVD was released with no effort and missed the point entirely because it had 1993’s audio alterations. My idea is for a standalone release of Star Wars in its unaltered form in Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital. This would not only preserve an important piece of film history, but make them a damn good amount of money as well. George Lucas probably put something in the Disney contract so they can’t do this though, because any sane person in charge of Star Wars would definitely have done this already. I just can’t stand the CGI crap George Lucas put into Star Wars. What was he thinking?

I think there may already be a thread on this somewhere on here? 😉

But yes, it is now 25 years since the last ‘dedicated’ official release of the theatrical version - far, far too long.

What do you mean “weird sock”?
I couldn’t think of a username so I just punched my keyboard.
Anyway, what I mean is if they won’t release all of the films unaltered, they could release a standalone ANH with no episode number like it was in 1977, and when I imagine what it would look like i think of this. https://imgur.com/a/RA4aO7q

The 1993 audio thing actually raises an interesting question, which is, just how original and unaltered should an original/unaltered release be before it’s considered definitive enough?

Wasn’t ESB only shown in 70mm for the first month or so, and had several differences from the “original” version we know now?

At some point it becomes a personal canon question. Some people like the mono mix, some people like multi-channel. All of the original mixes are authentic, so it just boils down to which one you like best, as it would be with video variants (70mm, alternate credits, cloudy composite, and so on), regardless of which ones may have technically made it to the theatre first.

I think I personally didn’t feel any disturbance in the Force until the 93 changes, but they were something I was grudgingly willing to endure at the time. The 97 changes were several bridges too far from the get-go and would never be acceptable, and the later versions were just continuations of the 97 freakshow. Now that we have so many great fan-created options, I wouldn’t settle for the 81, 85, or 93 revisions at all. My tolerance for fiddling has definitely decreased since finding this site.

And if Disney doesn’t want to do such a release, let Criterion do it. They love things like that.

They’d probably put George’s preferred version on disc 1 (they’re all about preserving the artist’s vision) and then get people like Robert A Harris to consult on a restoration neither George nor Disney could be bothered with.

When was the last time Criterion put out anything owned by Disney? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is The Life Aquatic, which was released theatrically through Touchstone, but I feel like that was already several years ago.

It would be great if they did the same for Graffiti and THX, although I don’t know what their current relationship is with Universal and Warner.

I saw this on https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1276324956486488064

I think these type of images can by awesomely effective tools in highlighting what many of us on here want…

(they could likely do with using a larger font for ‘#ReleaseTheOriginalTrilogy’, and maybe a link to SWVC too? ‘always a critic’ 😉 Kudos to doubleofive!)

Are there similar banners and images on here from ‘down the years’?

Yeah, these aren’t formatted for banner use (I did make a banner for my personal Twitter profile), but I could be convinced to distribute these outside of merch if wanted.

There’s no reason. Really there isn’t. So many cult and genre films have special editions and new scans from boutique and even studio labels now that it’s ridiculous when classic titles cannot get the same treatment.

Almost any label would give anything to do a release. I’m sure if Arrow, Indicator, MOC or even Criterion made a deal for a limited print run that was only the theatrical editions it would sell out in a nanosecond and prove us right after all these years.

It’s just simply getting the powers that be convinced.

It could be as simple as this, particularly if the licensee wasn’t allowed to make new extras:

  1. Brand new 4K or higher res scans without any monkey business and proper color grading. Now with 4K UHD there would also have to be a proper HDR grading pass as well.
  2. Include all original theatrical audio mixes (35mm Dolby Stereo, Mono, 70mm Dolby Stereo. LFL has them all archived.) and the 85 and 93 home mixes most are used to. Leave the audio alone and do not subject the tracks to overzealous manipulation like remixing effects, de-noiseing, re-equalizing and nearfield remixing.
  3. Properly encode the discs and max out the bitrate. This is important as a lot of discs usually don’t have good encodes.

That’s it. That’s all it takes. So really all it needs is the right person to say yes or care to even hear the pitch.

If it was Arrow or Indicator the boxset would have original art, every scrap of extras they could possibly get and be packed in a handsome slipbox like most of their sets at an affordable price. Arrow is now stepping into UHD so they could do it for both formats.

For example, the 1980 Flash Gordon (which I adore) is finally getting a new 4K restored transfer after years of the curummy old Blu-ray which made me always watch my Laserdisc copy instead. The full UK boxset release is 5 discs loaded with extras and a UHD version. All releases will have the original 2.0 Dolby Stereo and the 5.1 remix losslessly encoded. Arrow is doing a big SE release in the USA also in 4K UHD. This is because Studio Canal is doing catalog 4K restorations and actually releasing them to disc consistently unlike most. So now the film made because of SW’s success will have a better and more feature laden big release than the film that inspired it.

All of Lucas films should be made available with original audio and in not messed with editions. That means no DNR and grain scrubbing, no new fake mixes and original audio.

Maybe we can finally get a decent release of Raiders of the Lost Ark as well. I mean we got a very good edition of Willow and Howard the Duck, but not Raiders or Star Wars. That kind of nuts.

Honestly, every time I watch the OT I watch a different version. Sometimes I pop in my Blu-Rays and watch the 2011 cuts, sometimes I watch Despecialized, sometimes I watch Revisited. Sometimes I watch a different version of each, like DE Star Wars, RV Empire, or 2011 ROTJ. The only versions I haven’t watched yet are the D+ versions.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

It’s common sense Disney will do something huge for the 50th anniversary in 2027.

Most likely, there’ll be some massive box set released. Possibly the movies in 8K, if that’s a thing by then.

That’s probably the earliest we can hope for the original cuts to be released. If they aren’t released by the golden anniversary, then we can assume they won’t be as long as George Lucas is alive.

Then again, if they are released, it’s a good bet they’ll include all the restoration problems that came with the current versions.

They’re never gonna do it. It’s a real sadness.

As someone points out in the replies to that tweet, in May as much time will have passed since the release of TPM as had passed since the original Star Wars when TPM was released.

Anyway, 4k80 is roughly two-thirds done. Once it’s finished, the entire unaltered trilogy will be available for everyone to watch in not only full hd, but 2160p ultra hd as well. There won’t be any hdr versions (unless someone is working on that?), but this still feels like history repeating itself a little. A big reason the GOUT happened was because Lucasfilm realized how much money they weren’t making from all the fans who were acquiring fan preservations of the laserdiscs by downloading them for free or, worse, paying someone for a burned copy.

To be fair, it’s a miracle in itself that Lucas was willing to even release the GOUT DVDs and acknowledge the theatrical cuts existed at all.

I stand by my prediction that the unaltered versions will someday be re-released in my lifetime, but I also predict they’ll botch it with their restoration methods by adding too much DNR or frozen grain so the fan projects will keep being made.
