Hey, so I tried upscaling ESB:R to 4K. I denoised, upscaled, and regrained the footage all in After Effects.

Honestly, I still have to mess around with the denoising and regraining, both of which might be overdone.

So essentially it’s very much a work in progress, but I’m using the same techniques here as I have for my PT regrades.

Cool stuff man. Is it weird that I still can’t believe this massive project actually got released?

Could we maybe have a before/after for these? I find that’s helpful in seeing the changes.

I’m not sure what you’re doing: you’re upscaling in 4k the 720p mkv Ady released in summer 2017 (gosh, time flies…) ? How would it be possible to get higher resolution out of a 720p native resolution ?

I still hope a higher bitrate mkv is gonna be released soon.

Excited. Doing a chronological watch through with my kids. This will be the first time they’ve seen ESB in a year or two, and the first time with ESB-Revisited on the big screen.

Does Adywan have any intention of releasing a ~20gb 720p MKV? No menus or anything, just the video, like the lossy 8gb version already available. I assume he has a very high bitrate render already from which he produced the 8gb version, and running that through Handbrake or something oughtn’t take too long to render (though uploading may be a pain). I get that Adywan isn’t that fussed about resolution, and perhaps by extension things like bitrate, but it seems a shame to me to have the only version of this project available be noticeably degraded compared to what he actually made.

I think he’s said that he won’t release a high-bitrate MKV, but that he still intends to release a high-bitrate 720p Blu-Ray that will probably be around that size. I don’t know if he’s holding off on that to release all 3 Blu-Rays at once when he’s finished with ANH:R:HD and ROTJ:R or if the ESB:R Blu-Ray will come sooner.

I believe he did confirm that the ESB:R Blu-Ray is on hold and will be released alongside the others.

That’s fair enough, I get why he would want to release all the Blurays at once, complete with consistent menus and everything. But it means it’ll literally be years before we get to see a version of ESB:R with fewer compression artifacts, even though it’s already done.

I hate to clutter the thread with this, but hopefully after 10 years, I’ve earned the right to do it this once…

Is there any way to burn the MKV to a bluray disc?
I tried, but it looks very pixelated.
I know nothing about remuxing or demuxing or whatever it is I’ve seen mentioned, so maybe point your buddy toward a guide? or maybe a PM so this thread doesn’t get clogged up with my idiocy.
Thanks!

Not without reencoding, since the MKV doesn’t have the letterboxing bars required to get the vertical resolution to the required 720 pixels.

You’ll either need to use a Blu-Ray compliant h264 encoder and decent compression settings to reencode it while adding letterboxing, the output of which you can then remux using something like tsmuxer to make a BDMV folder or ISO image to burn to disc, or use a full-on Blu-Ray authoring program to do it all at once, but those tend to be limited on encoding options, leading to stuff like pixelation.

It’s something I haven’t toyed with in a while since I watch most of my stuff on my media player through rips I make of Blu-Rays I own rather than putting a disc in a player, so I don’t often burn fan projects to disc anyway.

Someone else will probably have more specific suggestions for you, but if I remember after work tonight or this weekend at some point I’ll do some Googling to see what the better (free) options are these days.

You’ll have to spend a little bit of money but I do mine with Dvdfab. Fairly straightforward and looks good.

I do remember DVDFab having halfway decent compression options, and it can do basic menus and stuff.

Does that mean a new version is coming soon?

Adywan has said he will not be doing any more edits after RotJ:R and ANH:R HD.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

And that has nothing to do with the question of an update to ESB:R to fix a technical error. Especially when it’s known that a Blu-Ray ISO release is already happening at some point down the road.

When this comes out on Blu-Ray, will the sound be lossless?

I just noticed something. For some reason, the opening 20th Century Fox anthem you used is the standard one composed by David Newman and used since 1997, instead of the one composed by John Williams exclusively for Episodes I-III, V and VI. I don’t understand why you changed it.
