it is such a silly little thing that there really shouldn’t be time spent explaining it.

I loved the film, but was extremely disappointed they said the words “Darth Sidious”. That was my biggest complaint.

Weird complaint…
Not enough people read the EU.
I thought it was weird to use, especially from Luke.
2 very minor nitpicky things: I thought lightsabers didn’t look as beautiful as usual, and I felt like the wipes from the transitions were too fast. Did anyone else notice this?

Not really, I find any prequelism in the ST complaint-worthy to some extent.
More importantly, they were barely in the film. Especially compared to what many people feared.
And also compared to those awful Ewoks.

You can lock the prequels up in the attic and feed them fish heads, but you can’t pretend they never existed at all. Might have been better if Luke had said Palpatine though.
Don’t tell anyone Jimmy Smits was in Rogue One either. 😛
Where were you in '77?
I do like how the prequels’ themes tied into TLJ somewhat. It does a good job of making them feel worthwhile without referencing them specifically, namedrop of Darth Sidious being the sole exception.
So long as what’s left of the Resistance doens’t set up shop in Gunga city on Naboo. 😉

I think this is why Luke’s story is so polarizing - his Jedi school devolved into an institution similar to the old Jedi Order, with Luke becoming a metaphorical Abraham who for a brief moment was willing to sacrifice his own family for this dogma. For those who think the ideas underlying the prequels had merit, this is a strong theme. For those who discard these ideas and think the Jedi are the only guardians of light full stop, I can see how this version of Luke would disappoint them.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’d kind of like to see a practical Gungan. Not enough to actually want to go back to Otoh Gunga, but it would be cool if we saw one in a cantina somewhere else.
Another potential reference to the PT, in the same breath Luke says that Obi-wan was responsible for the training and “creation” of Darth Vader. I feel like that word specifically (creation) implies the events of ROTS.
Personally, I like the PT references. Quality or not, they’re part of the franchise and part of the lore. I always thought that the fallibility of the Jedi was one of the most interesting aspects of the PT (yet of course not really explored there). One of my biggest hopes for the ST before I knew anything about TFA was that Luke would in some way address the failures of the Jedi of the past in training the new generation of Jedi. So this satisfies me quite a bit.
They also explain “balance” here better than in all the PT movies combined (though it’s still, of course, vague).

Technically there was one in the prequels. They blew a lot of dough on a costume for Ahmed Best, but Lucas wasn’t happy with the result. It was modified so the other actors had something to play off of. Bits of it actually appear in a couple shots.

Everything You Think is Important, Is Not Important - HelloGreedo
A bit harsh maybe, but HelloGreedo does make some interesting points in this video. Many fans do focus a a bit too much on what they think the upcoming films should be about, or what they think a character from the old films should be like after thirty years of life-experience.
Johnson also explained in an EW interview (Source) why he didn’t elaborate on Snoke;
Johnson explains why he didn’t go into Snoke’s back-story, comparing it to our introduction to Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. We didn’t know where he came from. We just knew he was pure evil, and that was enough. Perhaps not knowing where Snoke went to high school keeps that shrouded sense of mystery we needed. Plus, as Johnson points out, it would have stopped the movie in its tracks, which he didn’t want to do.
“It would have stopped any of these scenes dead cold if he had stopped and given a 30-second speech about how he’s Darth Plagueis. It doesn’t matter to Rey. If he had done that, Rey would have blinked and said, ‘Who?’ And the scene would have gone on.”
Before moving on himself, Johnson quickly added, “And I’m not saying he’s Darth Plagueis!”
It’s easy to forget retroactively that we knew very little about most backstories prior to the PT and the EU. Heck, even a lot of names, incl. Palpatine, were never actually spoken in the films.
Interesting short analysis of TLJ:
Not too sure about every point he makes, but it’s the first video I’ve come across so far that simply tries to analyse Johnson’s intentions with the film.

Absolutely, we’ve seen it here plenty.

thanks for the share. i just wish that was a longer chat!
So, uh, is this the good thread now? I think the other one just increased my risk of ocular cancer by about 200%.
Anyway, that’s a great Q&A that goes a decent way toward explaining Rian’s thought processes going into TLJ. I can’t wait for his audio commentary track.
(Sidenote: I wonder how doable it would be to edit and sync JJ’s TFA commentary to the Restructured edit similarly to how the SE commentaries were edited to sync to Despecialized…)

The last one was the best
Is Aayla Secura resurrected in this movie? That was one smokin’ hot Twilek. I can provide pictures upon request.
