mikehbkwm's 2006 GOUT DVD - 4K Upscale Project (Released)

mikehbkwm’s 2006 GOUT DVD - 4K Upscale Project (Released)

^ posted with kind permission by mikehbkwm on TSWT…

An abridged description (full details and info are up on TSWT forums)

'I did very little changes to these GOUT rips. I applied ‘Sharpen’ by 10% on all three preservations along with the 4K upscale (I did crop some of the edges on the right and left side as the image was not perfectly aligned on the original release). Lastly, ST and ROTJ DVD subtitles are ‘as is’ with how they would have originally looked back in 2006 and aligned correctly on screen.

Noise reduction applied.

My goal however was to offer a 4K upscale mostly unmolested by software.

Fixed the 4:3 Letterbox to anamorphic widescreen (2.40:1).’

Info

There are based on the NTSC discs.

SW: 7.21gb mkv file.
ESB: 6.20gb mkv file.
ROTJ: 6.88gb mkv file.

Episode 4 was probably my favourite episode yet. Pleasing to see both plot and character progression, yet was its own little adventure in itself… with some welcome world-building (of sorts)… and still the overall story pulls me in more with passing week.

Kudos to the young actors in this once again.

Funny I have like the exact opposite opinion of Episode 4 but I’m still loving the show. I just found the main plot far more interesting than that children-at-war subplot. It just felt too glossed over and simplified for such an intense topic. I get that it was intended more as a vehicle for Neel’s character development (and that this is a kids show) but I was hoping for more context and weight and maybe even relevance from that whole sequence, but it never really came. And as quickly as it started, we’re back to the main plot and heading up the tower. I think Neel’s character development could have been easily written into one of the two subsequent episodes while At-Achrann just becomes a dead planet and the arrival and tower sequences gets pushed back to the ending of the previous episode. Hmm, I’m getting ideas… maybe I’ll have to attempt an edit.

Yeah, I guess it was a little glossed over - in comparison to say… last week’s episode which I though beautifully captured KB’s character and issues with her having physical limitations since her accident… in a really well executed manner. (Though thankfully Neel has been pretty cool character throughout this season, too.)

The cast is all great, the plot is keeping me invested, its fun, and it offers a different glimpse into the GFFA. This show goes right up there with Mando S1-2 and Andor for me.

Same here - something a little different and fresh; a series that also took a risk in focusing on child actors for the main plot. A well constructed show that worked hard to draw us in and makes us care for the characters and also the story… (credit and kudos to all involved). I’m really looking forward to the finale.

Release Date…: February 11th 2021

                             Release Notes

'What is this you ask? This is a “theatrical” reconstruction (mostly) of Return of the Jedi
using the 2160p UHD BluRay HDR version as it’s main source. This project is SDR.

This is not a pure theatrical reconstruction though.
This is not a new Despecialized.

I call this project OTD83. Why?
I agreed to let someone else make the “official” D+83, due to my lack of
interest at the time, but I got impatient waiting for it so I’ve made my own version of
Jedi to watch using the UHD BR.
This is my version of a D+83 project but I’ll just give it a different name.
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

What does OTD83 stand for? Maybe my name OohTeeDee 83 or maybe Original Trilogy Disney 83.
Both I suppose.

v1.2 re-encode
The original v1.2 UHD was rendered with Handbrake. I didn’t realize it still used an
8bit pipeline even though I rendered to 10bit x265. This version re-encodes to x265
from the ProRes master to maintain a 10 bit pipeline and higher quality. You would
probably not see a difference but if you were to colour correct v1.2 you may see the
limitations of the 8bit pipeline.

v1.2 info

-One replacement shot in v1.1 had bad DNR so I needed to redo it.

v1.1 info

-I’ve fixed the blue Tie-Fighters in one replacement shot. Part of the problem was my grade
to make the blue planet match the shot before.
-I redid a Jabba subtitle shot.
-Restored the original Boba flying through the air. It’s so fast you can’t really see how
bad the original compositing was.
-Restored the other ewok eye shot that no one knew was changed.
-Restored Anakin’s eyebrows. Restored the entire scene so it all blends well.
-Changed the saturation and contrast throughout.
-Tweaked the colour and contrast of many shots and scenes to improve them.

Added the 1993 LD sound mix as requested.

v1.0 info

For the shots restored, I used my ProRes4444XQ minimalDNR master of 4K83 with v1.6 grading
applied as a base.
Jabba subs are overlayed using the .sup from Project Threepio.

Stuff that I didn’t restore the original…
-The shot of Boba Fett flying through the air is left SE. The original just looks bad.
-There is one shot that has three frames of blinking Ewok eyes. It’s barely noticeable.
Harmy’s list of SE changes doesn’t even mention it.
-Anakin doesn’t have eyebrows here. This is a change I didn’t care about. He looks better
without them anyway. The main reason for not restoring them is the drop in visual quality
that would go along with restoring all the shots.
-There are a few re-composited shots that are slightly different. They are much higher
quality in the UHD BR. The re-composites don’t change the original feel of the shots
and most people would never know a difference without direct comparison to the original.
-Did I miss anything else? Maybe?

One replacement shot is graded using a LUT made with DrDre’s tool. Everything else is
graded with curves. They are quicker and more forgiving than LUTs.
Most of the film is graded with one correction. There are a bunch of shots that are
tweaked further though.

This project is theatrically synced so any audio from 4K83 will work with it.

Theatrical but not completely theatrical…
I restored most of the original 1983 shots of the film, removing most of the CGI
and other unnecessary changes. My preference was quality over authenticity though.
My intent was to keep it as theatrical as possible, but I’m willing to sacrifice some
authenticity for quality sake so some creative license was used in the process.

It’s theatrical in spirit.’

Thoughts on this video? By Rick Worley
Time

There is already an engaging discussion on Rick Worley’s 3 hour and 40+ minute bad faith ‘argument’ youtube video, here…

How to Watch Star Wars, Part Two: The Special Editions Are the Movies, Get Over It’ - in Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases

^ the above discussion thread also has a fair number of discerning thoughts and opinions on it… feel free to add yours! 👍

…as well as thoughts on why anyone would want be told how to watch Star Wars… in a near 4-hour rambling incoherent video - let alone whoever Rick Worley is… in such an inflammatory manner containing some flimsy, contradictory and ‘strawman’ reasoning.

To say nothing of him attempting to personally denigrate and mock others who have contrasting opinions to his thinking (including members of this community here) to give some sort of credence or justification to many of his incorrect and poorly-researched claims.

Many fans merely want to have the choice in viewing whichever previously released version of ‘Star Wars’ they wish to see… and/or share the version they experienced for so many years with their loved ones, families, and friends etc - with the next generation. Or even take in one of the many other previous ‘visions’ (ie; 1997SE, 2004SE, 2011SE, 2019SE) that George has released over the years.

Or simply view the original theatrical OT films as each of the three OT directors made and released them - in the best quality available.

Does anyone find it weird that the 2011 versions of the OT are still shown on TV? I hardly ever watch stuff live any more, and it’s even rarer for me to suffer George’s changes, but I found recently it wasn’t the Macklunkey version. Or does Disney keep the “definitive” version to themselves?

Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice ITV showing the 2011 cuts for the Original Trilogy. Very weird - maybe from a ‘digital pack’ they had from years ago, so they just lazily re-ran that - and not the new 2019 ‘Maclunkey’ cuts?

I think they were available to watch on ITVX throughout December too - with Rogue One.

Although accuracy and attention to detail has never ITV’s strong point…

😉

It reminds me of when they re-released Star Wars (1977) in some cinemas around Europe around 2020 - some cinemas were showing the 2011 cuts, some were showing the 2019 cuts - and many of the cinemas didn’t seem to know which version they were showing.

Star Wars Trilogy: 1992 Fox Video - ‘Yellow Logos’ Full Screen VHS Preservation

A little description from Willarob: ‘It’s rendering at up to 689 fps. Star Wars was finished in just 4 minutes and 23 seconds, before I could finish typing this post. And this is using the “Very Slow” 2 Pass (slow, full resolution first pass) encoding. Of course this is just SD, but wow!’

All 3 films: 640x480 - NTSC.

Star Wars: 3.91gb mkv file
Empire Strikes Back: 4.20gb mkv file
Return Of The Jedi: 4.41gb mkv file

Links are available on TSWT - or send me a PM: 📍 A few available Original Trilogy Preservations - from a long time ago . . . . 📍

Personally, I love this VHS box set - one of my favourite releases for the Star Wars Trilogy… everything about it; the box, the ‘wings’, the artwork, that beautiful yellow lettering for the individual covers, even the tape label designs. The films themselves weren’t too bad either… 😉

Images by Williarob…

Over the years a few fans have been a little confused between the similar looking 1990 release - and the 1992 release.

A 13 minute video from the superb and insightful Nathan Butler youtube channel - highlighting the differences…

From the Star Wars Home Video Library #7: The First VHS Boxed Sets (1990 - 1992)

Hi PixelPlatter,

Hope you are doing well, too.

Why didn’t you post a request in the actual project thread by MJBenito - as everyone on here does?

The site does request that members not create new threads for existing projects like this - as it clutters up the forum - and is also bad form on here.

If creating a new thread that is NOT a fan project… please give fellow members a clear idea of what the thread is about. For example, add ‘Query’, or ‘Info’, ‘Discussion’, ‘Help: looking for…’, ‘Help Wanted’, ‘Info Wanted’, ‘Has anyone done a project on X?’, or ‘Idea: for Project X’ etc to the thread title. It annoys members to see lazily titled threads that appear to be projects on here - to open them - and only to find it is some lazy git just looking for a project, or wanting a link, or more info, or wanting someone else to make a project for them etc. Please do not make new threads for which there are project threads already in existence.

Are Moth3r and the other PreANH vhs bootlegs also being searched for?? TPM from Hungary? MOKÉP-related stuff?

Where to store these?

Hi all,

I’d like to present to you today a special project I’ve been working on for a number of years now.

The aim of the project was to create a Blu-ray companion to the Blu-ray release which archives all the best Star Wars features from official and unofficial sources, including all of the extra material from the previous laserdisc and DVD releases. Over time, the project grew into something much larger, and so I was forced to span the features over two BD-50 discs. This torrent is the first volume.

Included are the following features…

Documentaries:

Empire of Dreams (Source: DVD)
Star Wars Begins (Source: Vimeo)
Building Empire (Source: Vimeo)
Returning to Jedi (Source: Vimeo)
From Star Wars to Jedi (Source: Japanese Laserdisc)

Sources:

Where I can recall, I have listed the source for each item. As the items were collected over a number of years, I do not immediately recall where many came from. Over time, I will update them with as much information as I can. Many of the sources are not of my own, and I wish to thank the many original preservers, such as Babyhun, and also a special thanks to Jamie Benning for his wonderful Star Wars filmumentary features. Can I please encourage you to make a contribution to his Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning

Software:

To maintain worldwide compatibility, an effort was made to source all material in native NTSC format, retaining their original encoding. Where that was not possible, assets were carefully re-encoded to maintain as much of the original quality as possible via Adobe Premiere CS6. The disc was authored using Adobe Encore CS6.

The Future:

As mentioned, this disc took a very long time to create, working on and off through work commitments. I will immediately begin work on vol. 2 which will include Interviews and TV appearances, Trailers and TV spots, Commercials and Expanded Universe. I don’t know how long it will take, but I will be sure to release it here when it’s done.

Thankyou for your interest in this project, and please share for as long as possible.’

Wow, that is a very impressive amount of bonus material!! I have been hoping to find the MTV special for some time now. And this is only volume 1? Hopefulle volume 2 will become available one day.

Yeah, quite a nice set.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a ‘Volume 2’ - but there is always hope…

Thankyou for your interest in this project, and please share for as long as possible.’

.: Moth3r's PAL DVD project :.
Time

Apologies for the bump…

If anyone has a working copy of Moth3r’s ‘Return Of The Jedi’ for this project, could you please let me know via PM - thank you.

^ 29/12/24 Edit: a working copy of Moth3r’s ‘Return Of The Jedi’ has been found, shared and archived - thanks Darth Mallwalker 👍

Also, if anyone would like a copy of ‘Star Wars’, ‘Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return Of The Jedi’ from this project let me know via PM and I’ll be happy to share.

^ I recently found my old DVD discs for this set by Moth3r - but unfortunately only the SW and ESB discs are still working - and his ROTJ release has proven to be very elusive to find online… even at the old usual places (including usenet).

A few other similar ‘legacy projects’ from and around the OT have been made available at the link below. If anyone has any links for other similar projects they’d like to share, please let me know via PM - thanks…

📍 A few available Original Trilogy Preservations - from a long time ago . . . .

Skeleton Crew (live action series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Loving this series so far - and already looking forward to the next episode. Kudos to everyone involved in the making of this.

Layered and interesting characters, in a solid story, with an intriguing mystery to boot… and done in an unpredictable manner. A fun Star Wars adventure… with a little something for everyone.

Skeleton Crew is Special - 7 minute video from HelloGreedo.

Creatures & Droids - a 2 minute video from the official Star Wars youtube (contains spoilers and scenes for future episodes).
