Rey won a lightsaber fight without any training at all. This indicates that she is special and incredibly strong in the force and it begs for an explanation.

When was this lightsabre fight?

In TFA.

You are referring to the sabre fight vs Ren in TFA - where he was already injured from Chewbacca’s powerful crossbow shot, was bleeding from it, also taking a hit from his sabre fight with Finn, and also felt conflicted & weak over just killing his father? In a fight in which the aim was not to kill Rey - but to bring her to Snoke… a fight in which he actually offered to be her teacher… and in which Rey was on the backfoot for nearly all of it before ‘letting the force in’…

Rey didn’t win the lightsabre fight at all… even after ‘letting the force in’ as it were - though she had gained the upper hand by scarring him & put him on his arse - yet the fight was broken up by the planet coming apart…

Um, she did win the fight. The only reason he survived or wasn’t taken prisoner is because of the planet coming apart.

No, he’s just on his arse. There was no winner due to the planet coming apart.

She may well be special and strong with the force - Snoke’s on-screen ascertain to Rey that… ‘So much strength. Darkness rises and light to meet it’ & ‘I warned my young apprentice that as he grew stronger that the equal in the light would rise’ (and his mistaken assumption that was Luke - not Rey) is a statement of this. That you choose to ignore this as an explanation is on you.

As I said, I buy that explanation because this thing of the equal of the light rising wasn’t shown or referred to in any of the other movies.

Things evolve and change over the course of these films - that they aren’t mentioned or shown previously does not negate them. That it is mentioned on-screen - whether you agree, dislike, or ‘buy’ it - does not negate it.

If you want to ignore an explanation then go ahead and ignore it - but don’t then state there wasn’t one / or that it then ‘begs for an explanation’.

Well if the explanation is argued to make no sense in the context of what came before or to be underdeveloped, than it does negate the explanation in the eyes of the beholder. That’s what we’re debating here I think.

The ‘balance’ in the force is a theme (and it’s interpretation) that has run through the films. That light rises to meet darkness or darkness rises to meet the light is hardly anything new in TLJ - or underdeveloped previously.

This meme or whatever you call it is dumb. Obi-Wan didn’t tell Luke: “hey you’re Dad was an asshole and the Jedi deserve to die.” Yoda never told Luke: “there is no dark side or light side. the jedi were arrogant and wrong”.

The people who defend these ST movies are no different than the people who defend the prequels. Mental gymnastics and totally ignoring the spirit of the original movies. But hey look it’s Darth Mual with his cool double bladed lightsaber. Er…I mean look it’s Porgs and Kylo Ren with a saber handle! It’s Star Wars duh!

If that is your attitude - then why are you here? To bait or antaognise those on here that do like these films? If so your stay here is going to be a short one.

Excuse me, am I not allowed to post my thoughts on the movie? What did I do to violate the rules? Or you just disagree with me and my posts bother you so you’d rather silence them?

I simply stated that if are to here to bait or antagonise those on here that do like these films your stay is going to be a short one.

No-one is being silenced here - and there are plenty of others who’ve voiced their disapproval of various SW films in a critical manner without baiting or antagonising those who do enjoy them.

Get over yourself.

Since I’m new here, can you point out which rule I violated that deserved you to threaten me? I read through them…

  1. My post was on topic about the movie and the franchise in general.
  2. I didn’t attack anyone.
  3. I didn’t use any profanity.
  4. I don’t have a signature.
  5. I didn’t make an image-only post.
  6. I did not harass anyone.
  7. I didn’t make any personal attacks, let alone the ones listed.
  8. I don’t have a sock account, I’m new here.

I can’t see any reason you would threaten me except you don’t like my point of view. I wasn’t aware that was against the rules.

I haven’t threatened you - and you know it. Read the above ‘there are plenty of others who’ve voiced their disapproval in a critical manner without baiting or antagonising those who do enjoy them’.

I do find it interesting that haven’t denied you are here to bait or antagonise others.

Anyway…

See Rule 2 - ‘Don’t attack other members personally. When debating, argue the point, not the person’ - as ray_afraid said previously, it is a personal attack on those who do enjoy them.

I suggest you heed the rule.

And also, lose the attitude.

Were Yoda and Obi-Wan not ‘broken’ by events earlier in their lives? It would seem Luke is too in TLJ, and understandable given the circumstances - not forgetting his path to a change of heart towards the end of the film - sacrificing himself to do so.

For me, I like it more after I left the cinema. The more I think about it - and I am, weeks after it’s release - the more I’m understanding it and appreciating it.

(That’s not to omit the parts I personally thought didn’t quite work - yet I never went in expecting a perfect film - I’ve never seen one yet. Well, there was that one short film on pornhub…)

I don’t think the Luke and Obi-Wan/Yoda scenario really are comparable. For one Obi-Wan and Yoda didn’t do anything bad to Anakin, like considering to kill him before Anakin went all psycho. Secondly, Obi-Wan and Yoda didn’t just hide under a rock on their own accord, waiting to die. They were forced into hiding by a Jedi purge in a galaxy controlled by the Empire. They also actively tried to improve the situation by going after Sidious and his new apprentice. When that failed, they hid the twins, and bided their time, until the twins grew into adulthood and the Rebel Alliance had a fighting chance.

And despite the above, they remain characters still ‘broken’ by the events earlier in their lives - in the context of a reply to ‘while there is a place for gritty and broken heroes in cinema (John Wick, John McClane, etc.), doing it to existing heroes is a step too far for me’.

Here comes a new one: I liked the look of those junior novel covers they have in the library. So I did one based off that. The gimmick is that each film has their own coloured case.

Imgur

I like those a lot - especially the different coloured cases for each too - though what do you mean ‘junior novels’? 😉

My Star Wars novel came in a cracking Star Wars tin (and erm… a doodle book). The tin’ll be housing some old SW dvds soon enough 😃

She is indeed a Northern lass - born there and spent much of her upbringing there - as you can tell from the accent - which I too hope she keeps, though it may be a little toned down.

All the best Doctors are from the North 😉 (runs out of thread before any soft southerners pull me up on that!)
