Been reading METRO 2033 and THINNER.

All the Star Wars books I never paid a cent for but they’re still on my Universal Book Reader. They’re not worth listing even though this forum is geared towards Star Wars.

With the laptop in the pawnshop for almost a week, I finally got the opportunity to get some reading done.

The books I read:

The books I got roughly half-way through before abandoning because the interest factor just wasn’t there:

The book I’m close to finishing:

I’m reading Outbound Flight by Tim Zahn. Good stuff so far.

Not enough people read the EU.

Ordered Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo off of Amazon. Not really into it yet. I don’t really like the writing style, the author has forgone commas entirely but doesn’t break his sentences with periods either.

Spending money on a book only to find out you don’t like it always sucks.

yeah, I got The Book of the New Sun last year or the year before and couldn’t make it through the second volume. There’s something nice about an unfinished book though, since you can imagine any wild and spectacular ending. That’s why I don’t have much guilt at leaving less than enthralling books unfinished - at least there is that mystery.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

SKELETON CREW – STEPHEN KING

The first and last time I read this collection was back in 2002/2003, and I figured it was time enough at last to revisit it. Sad to say, I only really liked seven out of the twenty-two stories: “The Mist”, “The Monkey”, “The Jaunt”, “Word Processor of the Gods”, “Beachworld”, “Gramma”, and “The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet”. The remaining stories were either meh, started off strong but ended on a weak note, or – in the case of “Mrs. Todd’s Shortcut” – nigh-unreadable.

Usually such a low good-to-otherwise ratio leads to weeding, but “Word Processor of the Gods” happens to remain one of my favourite King short stories, so I’ll be hanging onto my copy of the book.

I finally got around to reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. It’s a damn good, engrossing read; I don’t know why I put it off for so long.

I still in the middle of reading the Bible. I am simultaneously reading it in the KJV and NIV84. I have read Genesis, Job, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, and 2 Samuel. I an currently reading Psalms. I am at Psalms 106 in the KJV and Psalms 101 in the NIV84.

Research. I’d avoid it otherwise.

So that’s what “research” means!
Makes sense: I would expect a lot of misplaced colons

Probably can find those in your local Vend-a-gut.

So I’m currently reading a very strange reply by one Mr. Flink that I never saw in December, and that I think I sorta get (gross) but suspect there’s…something…going on…I…don’t…quite…get…
And I’m all like wut

Nearly done with The Bourne Identity.

Finished this. I liked it. Plot’s definitely more complex in the book than the movie, but I prefer the movie’s handling of the relationship between Bourne and Marie. I might eventually read the next two books, especially since I don’t care about those two corresponding movies

Now reading: Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick

What kind of order is that? Not that the Bible is chronological, but Joshua through 2 Kings is. NIV is one of the worst translations in my opinion by the way.

We just read The Great Gatsby in my English class. It wasn’t terribly interesting to me. There were actually some interesting aspects throughout, but overall it was just rather boring and pointless. We’ve started watching the movie (2013) in class and are probably half way through it. I’ll post my findings in the proper thread when we finish.

I quite enjoyed Gatsby when I was in the same situation last semester. Better than the nigh-unreadable nonsense that is Their Eyes Were Watching God, the current assigned book in my class.

I started reading Dune towards the end of the summer and didn’t get very far by the time I had to return it to the library, so I’m going to try again (this time from my school library, where the return date is “whenever”).

I finally finished Dune! It was great. Are any of the sequels worth reading?

Dune Messiah’s good. Not as great as Dune, but still worthwhile.

I have yet to read the remaining books in the series.

I just finished Dune too. I agree, it was great! I’m reading the second one now but haven’t been able to get into it as much.

I also just finished The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein. Such good of.

STAR WARS: THE HUTT GAMBIT – A. C. CRISPIN

PROS

Crispin’s style is very fluid and readable; the story wasn’t boring; Han & co. never came across as out of character; it was nice to see characters from Daley’s books, L. Neil Smith’s Lando trilogy, and the Marvel comics included in the plot.

CONS

The fateful first encounter between Han and Fett was like something out of Robot Chicken; Vader’s cameo was beyond pointless; Soontir Fel’s purpose in the plot was apparently to serve as a reference to the X-Wing comics, as he literally does nothing else in the book; the novel exists just to make a trilogy out of a two-novel story, 'cause at no point in the book does anything of consequence happen – Han doesn’t evolve as a character, nobody important to Han dies/betrays him, etc.
