- Force new users through a rules acknowledgment step, especially emphasizing “no link requests.”
I think this should be universal for all fan edit forums. It will prevent a lot of confusion for new users.
Any way these posts can be auto removed or accounts temp banned?
So annoying seeing so many threads getting updated with people asking for links and not reading the site rules.
Maybe new accounts get informed of a ban if they ask for links in a thread.
Maybe I’m just whining. Idk lol

I think we need some new rules around these hit-and-run accounts that sign up to request a link and are never heard from again.

Not sure if these are possible, but I gave ChatGPT a try for potential fixes:
Limit posting for new accounts — maybe require a 24-hour waiting period, or only allow replies after reading a certain number of threads or posts. Even a short cooldown would cut down on hit-and-run stuff.
Auto-remove or flag posts that include phrases like “any links?” or “where can I find…” from accounts with under X posts or under X days old.
Force new users through a rules acknowledgment step, especially emphasizing “no link requests.”
Temporary posting bans (automated) for first offenses, just to discourage the behavior without needing mod intervention every time.

Yeah, that seems a good idea - so many seemingly choose to ignore the ‘Welcome To’, ‘Help’, ‘About’, ‘How Do I Do This?’ and the pinned ‘Index & Help’ info threads located around the site here - let alone both the ‘site rules’ & ‘fan project rules’… and just make another needles and unnecessary ‘link request’ posts.
Some people do likely visit here through a direct link elsewhere online - though to not look around for any assistance or guidance on how to acquire projects is somewhat baffling… (despite having to register and activate their accounts on here)… with a few newer members expecting help by posting issues and problems in the actual project threads (and not in ‘General Assistance’ or ‘Forum Feedback’ sections of the site).
- Auto-remove or flag posts that include phrases like “any links?” or “where can I find…” from accounts with under X posts or under X days old.
I’d be up for manually deleting the various ‘link request’ posts on here. In an effort to not only clean the threads of these disruptive posts - but to also try and deter that all-too familiar mindset of 'the person above me made a link request post - so I will now too’ type of posting.
Plus, it is a real pity some project creators and members have left here over the project threads becoming ‘link request’ zones. It’d be a boom to get as many returning here as possible - and may help assuage others who may also be considering leaving here.
Simply getting project threads to be about the actual projects themselves once again; with thanks, feedback, reviews, suggestions, the exchange of ideas, overcoming technical or editing issues, possible future versions, or just simply joining in the posts on what people enjoyed about specific projects etc…
A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - includes info on how to ask for a fan project and how to search for projects and threads on OT•com.

Take your time to look around this site before posting… Do NOT just lazily make yet another ‘link request’ post - or a new thread asking for projects.
I’d be willing to help as well. My job is in technology and I have a background in SQL and database management.

I’ll consider some of these suggestions (a few have been discussed already).
In the meantime:

One more suggestion from me (honest!)…
❗ The correct way of… how to ask for a fan project …on the OriginalTrilogy•com ❗ - is pinned up in the Fan Edits and Projects for Other Properties section of the site.
Would it be worth me posting up 3 more threads like this in the 3 other ‘Fan Project’ sections of the site - in Star Wars Preservation, Star Wars Fan Edits and Other Projects, and Preservation of Other Properties sections, and having them pinned up?
They may be a little help / another step in trying to stem the flow of so many ‘link request’ posts from newer members - as well as something easy and simple others can point to in giving newer members a ‘heads-up’.
No worries if not - just spitballing ideas 😃.
Edit: or repost and pin this ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS: “Link begging” posts will be deleted without notice - in in the 4 ‘Fan Project’ sections of the site?

I don’t know if posting more links to threads people are already ignoring will help.
The link begging announcement is in the announcement section in each of the fan project discussions already, but I don’t expect people to read it there either. It’s really just a CYA thing so they can’t complain when they get warned/banned.
Along with the bug fixes for automatically moving users to the Members group after 7 days, I added some messaging to the account activation/confirmation page that directs users to About and Help for their review. I also added a bit to the Help page under the “Account help” section.
All of the automated suggestions and additional new member restrictions (like a 24-hour delay) are considerably more work and will impact all new members negatively; we need to balance spam control and UX.
