Could Lucas screw movies up anymore (Indy 4)

Lucas: Indy IV Starts In 2007

George Lucas told Empire magazine that he, director Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford are aiming to shoot a proposed fourth Indiana Jones movie by mid-2007, with an eye to a 2008 release. But, he added, getting everyone back together may not be easy.

"Before, I was just working with Steven and Harrison," Lucas told the magazine. "Now everybody's a superstar, so it's a little bit more difficult than it was then."

As for the story? "We're basically going to do The Phantom Menace," Lucas said cryptically, referring to Star Wars: Episode I. "People's expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing. ... We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans. ... But nobody wants to get into it unless they are really happy with it."

Lucas added: "The 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation has freed up an idea for a plot that was originally deemed too incendiary. I discovered a McGuffin. ... I told the guys about it, and they were a little dubious about it, but it's the best one we've ever found. ... Unfortunately, it was a little too 'connected' for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, 'Can't we do it with a different McGuffin? Can't we do this?' and I said no. So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it, and Steve said 'OK.' I said, 'We'll have to go back to that original McGuffin and take out the offending parts of it, and we'll still use that area of the supernatural to deal with it.'"

Excuse me??
We're basically going to do TPM??
So, does that mean Indy is going to have an annoying CGI sidekick that people will be created 'Death to ______' websites about??

So... does that mean it's going to be a prequel with an old Harrison Ford with an out-of-place and impossible cameo by Short Round?

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The way that article is written, by "we're going to do the Phantom Menace," Lucas means that they're going to do a film that has mega high expectations and probably isn't going to please all of the fans. That's my take anyway.

Furthermore, I had no idea what a "McGuffin" was, so I looked it up:
Main Entry: McGuffin
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: in film, a plot device that has no specific meaning or purpose other than to advance the story; any situation that motivates the action of a film either artificially or substantively; also written MacGuffin
Etymology: Alfred Hitchcock's term, based on a story where this device was used in a story set on a Scottish train

So it sounds like they're basically going to take a previously unimportant plot point from one of the first three films and make that the premise of Indy 4.

He didn't actually say the McGuffin comes from any of the earlier films, even if it almost seems to imply it by saying it's 'connected'. Maybe it's too 'connected' to Spielberg and Lucas themselves, or to the public consciousness, or something else like that. He also mentions removing 'the offending parts' of it, which is interesting. People tend to get offended over religion the most, so maybe that's the biggest clue that it's another religious artifact or something to do with religion.

By the way, one of the most famous McGuffins was the actual Maltese Falcon. When it came down to it, the object itself wasn't the real point of the film, but it did serve as the thing that moved the story along. And that's the genius of it.

Its not religious, but it would be interesting if that (the Maltese Falcon) WAS what Indy was after in this next movie. Where Boogie, the fat man and Lorre failed, Indy will succeed...or will he?

What is the Maltese Falcon?

Honestly, I don't know how anyone could draw any reasonable conclusions from that Lucas quote. Considering how skewed his version of reality is, it just seems like another in a long line of cryptic quotes from him in which he hints he's stumbled onto something brilliant, when in fact it is something rather inconsequential.

The Maltese Falcon is a detective novel from 1930. It was made several times into a movie, with the most famous version being from 1941 with Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre.

In the story, the Maltese Falcon is a priceless gold statue encrusted with jewels (a gift from the Island of Malta to the King of Spain), which was lost at sea and later rediscovered, only to be covered in a black paint which made it look more like a common statue.

In the movie, the Falcon is never actually shown on camera until the last few minutes, although it is seen wrapped in newspapers for a portion of the film. However, the way it affects people, bringing out their greed to the point of murder, is what moves the story.

Worst idea ever making another indy film, apart from the PT.

It sounds like they're doing Indiana Jones and the Monkey Prince. One of the original ideas for Indy 3 that they thought had racist connotations, so it was scrapped. I wonder if this has been resurrected based on this article.

Well, we have another doomed project from Lucasfilm- it will make 300 million at the box office, but ruining franchises is natural for Lucas. Plus, isnt Harrison getting too old to play Indy? He might as well cast Hayden in the role!

Just leave the franchise be and let the good films speak for themselves. Hey, there's always Spielberg. Is Lucas working on the screenplay? Please no. I think that Lucas is still incredibly bitter about the reception TMP got.

Yeah, the quote pretty much suggests that he honestly believes that TPM was ill-received because it defied expectations, rather than it was simply a crap movie, which it was...

This does not alarm me, because...

1- These are actually old "news".
2- Indy 4 is not gonna happen.
3- Even if it saw the light of day, there would be NO way GL would direct it.

Plus: Apart from SW related products and SW dadaistic TV experiments, I belive GL is never actually going to do any creative production.

Steven Spielberg is directing and I for one am in high anticipation for this. I've enjoyed the Indiana Jones films even more than the Star Wars ones, albiet only slightly.

I heard Callista is up for the role of Shortround for this movie - as she does have the same 'look' as a 10 year old boy...
