Info: TLJ - Caretaker village sequence

I’m pretty satisfied with TLJ as it is, but this is one deleted scene I feel is crucial and should be added back into the film. After seeing it on the blu-ray I can feel it’s absence when I watch the film now. It really shows Rey and Luke reaching their breaking point and provides a stronger rationale for their actions later that night.

A few questions:

Any fanedits that integrate this scene already?

Has anyone tried restoring it? A few shots with background plates (?) look off, as well as Rey running along the rocks. I assume the latter part can just be edited out.

I think someone did restore most, if not all, the deleted scenes back into the film for their Edit (possibly a few Editors did?) - though can’t recall which… doh!

There is a section for TLJ Fan Edits (around 20 so far) in the An Index Thread for Star Wars Fan Edits and Other Projects - hopefully the ‘Rey & The Caretaker Village’ scene will be mentioned in one of the cutlists / ideas lists (or someone else can remember which Edit(s) contain it.

Good luck man 😃

Edit: This Edit has the Caretaker Village scene restored to it - STAR WARS: Last Jedi (The Anti-Cringe-Cut), by DonKamillo; in the ‘Added’ section - ‘Deleted scene showing Luke’s third lesson to Rey (involving the island natives)’.

Double Edit: ForceGhostRecon’s The Last Jedi - Clean Cut edition also has the Caretaker Village Scene in it (or will have for v4).

Some other TLJ Edits may also have it too.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

There are many who say that they would like this scene put back in, but I haven’t seen it done (I haven’t checked out the Anti-Cringe Cut). When I do my own TLJ edit I’d like to fix the unfinished effects and use the scene.

As I was preparing for TLJ: Legendary, I supposed that the reason for the caretakers’ existence was for that scene, and that I should either incorporate that scene or remove the caretakers altogether. I went with the latter because I agree with RJ’s commentary, to the effect that without this scene the last time Rey and Luke converse prior to their falling out has a suggestion that Luke might give in to her beckoning. When Luke is approaching her as she ‘touches hands’ with Kylo, it seems like he was just about to come over to her perspective.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I’d love to see this scene fixed and reimplemented. Rian’s reasoning on the commentary is smart but I think there’s a solution. The issue with how the scene is conceived is that it comes immediately after Rey saying she won’t fail Luke, so that perceived progress in their relationship is negated.

But the deleted scene actually does help in terms a lot in terms of both explaining Luke’s perspective but also ultimately shows Luke feeling bad and inching closer to returning to help, himself.

In my mind you resolve this simply by delaying its placement until after we cut back to Rey and Luke (so right after the Fathier chase and before Luke taps back into the force). This way you get to live for a bit with the beat of Luke and Rey getting along, and you get to follow up Luke feeling bad after the caretaker debacle with him reaching out to Leia.

As for how well this sequencing works pacing-wise, not sure. As well, you’d probably want to make the second lesson scene seem less like it’s at sunset, which I’ve tried to do with little success thus far (though I am no color expert).
