It would have made more sense to show him getting greyer as time went on, since it would then line up with Vader’s face too as they were both dark side users. Didn’t he look worse in AOTC than ROTS? It’s a redundant rebate I suppose.

He totally did.

AOTC

ROTS

I guess they were originally going for him to look more and more corrupted over time.

Never heard of the EMPEROR PALPATINE SURGICAL RECONSTRUCTION CENTER?

Sigh. Legends is best canon.

Thought I would dig out the Star Wars Holiday Special as I had not seen it through in years.
Blimey! That was a real test of endurance. Even worse than I remembered.
The best thing about this recent viewing was the Cantina scene. I forgot all about the Mos Eisley creatures from the film appearing. It was good to see the costumes and masks of background aliens in more detail than the film.

The Cantina sequence has a different director than most of it. As I recall he was one of Lucas’ film school friends who George chose to direct it.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

There are no photos with Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing together?

Probably not, at least on set because they didn’t have any scenes together. I remember Mark saying somewhere that he said to Carrie that he was jealous of her to get to work with Cushing but then Carrie said that Mark got to be even more with Guinness so he shouldn’t be complaining.

I know Mark met Cushing since I’ve seen photos of that but haven’t seen Carrie with Guinness so had to google it and found some I’ve not seen before:

It won an Empire Award but not a Rebel Award? That can’t be.

Because it’s a reader poll.

In ESB Despecialized the speeders on Hoth look far grainier than they did in the SE version, but how could that be? Is this just a result of recomping the effects?

I imagine film grain was added because the Blurays are the primary source for Despecialized, to overcome the Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) applied to them.

Digital recomping could reduce grain. If I understand the process correctly, in optical effects composition, certain elements will be processed more times than others, leading to variation in grain levels and generational loss within frames. Digitally, you just scan and overlay.

Sorry I say grainier as a catch-all term, it generally looks blurrier and more washed out. I’m assuming this is what it probably looked like between 1980 to 1995 but it’s been so long. Just curious on the technical differences, beyond of course just rotoscoping in GOUT elements which are poorer resolution. Unless these bits are taken directly from the older releases (specifically shots of the speeders approaching Han’s igloo, the flat angle as they go over the trenches, and the low level angle as they use the tow cable).

The more layers you composite together with film, the grainier the shot will end up, since the grain of each layer of film is included in the composite. With digital compositing you can isolate the elements and combine them all separately, so you’re not adding grain on top of grain on top of grain.

True. But what did the SE version do to make it so clean and crisp, particularly the vents on the back end - and about that was the offensive to the restoration plan?

Someone in another thread asked if a Jedi or Sith ever stopped a Light Saber from starting. I’m curious about this too.

In Dark Empire Palpatine blows up a lightsaber hilt with the Force. However, that’s the closest I can recall just from memory. Of course Vader (even in the movies) used the Force to activate his lightsaber slower than normal to make himself look intimidating, so it shouldn’t be outside the realm of possibilities.

You could always go through the Force power list on Wookieepedia if you’re patient enough; http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Force_power/Legends

I have a teniously related thought.

So in several movies, dropping the saber makes it turn off. But why? Also in ROTJ Vader throws his, it hits the catwalk Luke is on and then turns off. What’s going on, some kinda magic powers?

Author
Time

Could be a safety feature. Dropping a live saber might cut through the outer hull of a spaceship or cause a lot of unintended damage. I suppose via the Force one could keep the button pushed down. Or else Sith sabers differ from Jedi in the design of the on/off switch?

For that matter, what’s to keep a saber from accidentally being turned on if you bump into something while it’s hanging from your belt?
