"I am your father" Documentary on Blu-Ray/DVD. Tribute to David Prowse.

So this documentary is basically about making a fan-edit of ROTJ with Prowse as the unmasked Vader?

(Has this been an issue among fans? Iā€™ve kind of taken Sebastian Shaw for granted, and it never occured to me that Prowese had any strong feelings about it.)

They actually did it, by a professional director. He asked permision to Lucasfilm, and of course it was denied. But it was shot anyway and viewed on a private screening with a few people including Prowse. They are no images of this scene in the blu-ray, because of the legal problems they would have for showing it. But there are images of Prowse during the makeup process and also during the private screening.

The documentary also talks of the reasons why Prowse was replaced by Shaw. Apparently George Lucas was pretty upset with D. Prowse because he believed that he leaked information to the press about the death of Vader during the shoot of ROTJ. Prowse always denied it.

Itā€™s certainly interesting and to be perfectly honest If you compare the body of Davis Prowse with Sebasitian Shaw.

Davis Prowse had a lot of muscle and was a much larger build.

Sebastian Shaw looks plump and fat comparitively.

Itā€™s not so much the face but the actual build of the man itā€™s actually pretty obvious itā€™s a different person when Sebastian Shaw is a force ghostā€¦ But I guess it can be explained away by Vaders replacement Robot Body parts so it does not really create an issue

Davis Prowse is also quite a bit taller which is another problem that sebastian Shaw obviously is not Vader as he Looks Stunted as a force ghost.

Wasā€™nt the make up shot of Prowse back of his head for Empire Strikes Back and not Return of Jedi?

Itā€™s David Prowse, the makeup was done for the reshooting of the ROTJ final scene when Vader takes his mask off

The scene was shot again in 2015 by the director Marcos CabotĆ” in homage to Prowse and then was showed in a private screening with the actor and a few people. The scene doesnā€™t appear in the documentary because they didnā€™t obtain the permission of Lucasfilm for even shoot it. But there are some minutes of him during the makeup process and during the screening.

So did they replace the force ghost shot? It seems obvious that they did dying Vader from your comments but to what prowse voice too? so Is it safe to assume they dressed him up for the force ghost swap also?

Just the mask scene, no ghost scenes lol šŸ˜„ ā€¦ About the voice, sure it was him. Now the actor has around 80 years old and itā€™s voice itā€™s very similar to the voice of James Earl Jones back then. Also they used another actor to do the role of Luke, maybe with this actor his voice was dubed.

I saw this again earlier todayā€¦

A really absorbing and insightful documentary (from 2015) - featuring Dave himself, and interviews with Star Wars producers Gary Kurtz & Robert Watts, actors Kenny Baker & Jeremy Bulloch, along with archive footage of Ben Burrt & James Earl Jones, and many people behind the scenes involved the making of the OT films and the look and design of Vader.

It features some stunning artwork depicting famous scenes and images from throughout the Original Trilogy.

The doc also touches on his early life, his long career in film and tv before and after the Original Trilogy films, as well as his life since.

As the story goes in regards to Dave Prowse supposedly revealing the end of the Original Trilogy to the press before filming had finishedā€¦ this is debunked here. Also there is story from the journalists who broke the leaked story at the time - in which they claim it was NOT David Prowse who was the source providing the leaks to them.

Yet still Lucasfilm persist with shunning the actor, making him persona non grata from attending official functions etc, and also from the larger conventions - which the doc also covers.
Ā

Well worth a watch - and with some top narration from Colm Meaney.
