Kathleen Kennedy, Spielberg's longtime producer, said she wouldn't speculate on other Spielberg plans to rethink older films, but she considers the changes to "E.T." minor compared with Lucas' "Star Wars" revisions.

"There's no comparison, because George went in and he redid whole scenes and sequences," she said. In contrast, "E.T." is receiving "a wide variety of subtle changes."

"I don't quite understand what the controversy is all about," Kennedy said. "It would be a big controversy if the studio was going in making a bunch of changes to movies and then releasing DVDs because they felt the movie was better or something. But if a director is reissuing a movie and wants to go in and make adjustments, that's entirely up to the vision of the director."

Listening to this and other interviews, there's a repeated sense of a want of the people they work with to feel like family.  This is something Lucas had wanted for his Ranch folks.  But that's hard to accomplish as the company is thousands strong and many are contracted on a job-by-job basis.

Lucasfilm COO, President Micheline Chau Retires

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/article/lucasfilm-coo-president-micheline-chau-retires-54891

Micheline Chau, president and COO of Lucasfilm, has retired after two decades with the company, Lucasfilm announced on Wednesday.

Kathleen Kennedy, who joined Lucasfilm as co-chairman in June, will serve as interim president. The heads of the various departments, such as Industrial Light & Magic animation, LucasArts (gaming) and licensing, will report to Kennedy for the time being.

The company has no plans to name an immediate replacement for the COO position.

“I’ve spent the past two decades at Lucasfilm growing the business and in the process have had the distinct pleasure of working with some of the most creative people in the world,” Chau said in a statement. “I’m very proud of what Lucasfilm has accomplished during my tenure and I know the company is set up for great things and will continue to inspire audiences for a long time to come.”

Chau joined the company as CFO and became president and COO in 2003. She oversaw the development of several projects that helped grow the Lucasfilm brand, including the a TV series, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," and the creation of the company’s animation division.

She has also been a driving force behind the company's international expansion, including the opening of a studio in Singapore.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have Mich at the helm of my company,” George Lucas, founder and co-chairman of Lucasfilm, said in as statement. “She has provided the focus and strategy needed to keep Lucasfilm at the  forefront of the global entertainment industry. Mich has been a key  member of my executive team for over 20-years and she will be missed. I wish her the best in her retirement."

Lucas has been eying an exit from the company as well, stating his plans to retire within the next few years. The arrival of Kennedy, a long-time Lucas collaborator,  was yet another sign of the "Star Wars" creator's slow but steady march out of the company that bears his name.

She sounds very poorly spoken, childish, non-entertaining, annoying, and unintelligent...all the qualities of the current state of the Star Wars franchise...  She's a good match!

-Someone, someday, needs to bring back the LIGHT SIDE to Star Wars.  Has anyone else noticed striking similarites between the character of Anakin/Vader and George Lucas, or is it just me?

-It's called STAR WARS. NOT "Episode IV: A New Hope". Kids, get this straight.

She's actually very sharp. I have faith in her to do good things, if she's allowed.

Which Kathy Kennedy are you talking about the one who worked on ET and Raiders, or Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?

God i hope Frank Marshall is right and INDY V is dead in the water.

Lucas quit  as leader at Lucasfilm and retired again, on movie 4 Spielberg and Ford had their arms twisted to do it.  Both who thought the Alien idea was bad but that they owed Lucas because of previous relationships in film and friendship.

They won't publicly say they thought part 4 was shit but they got their payday.

I hope IMDB   is wrong because i have zero interest in Jurassic Park IV and Indiana Jones V.

Would prefer Spielberg make new stand alone films.

Lincoln was in development hell for so long Liam neeson told Spielberg off.

After working with Lucas and Spielberg he must have some stories to tell, horror stories, lol.

You work with moguls that big and ego will be an issue.

Though i do respect Kathy and Frank's work at Disney with the works of Miyazaki and studio Ghibli.  I completely disagree with their backing Lucas destruction of the oot.  But so does Spielberg even though he thinks films should be released untouched now, weird.

I think the bad rap Kennedy has been getting since TLJ was released on theaters is undeserved. She’s a producer first and foremost, and has been in the business for over thirty years knowing how the industry works, so I’m pretty sure she knows what she’s doing.

^ from the 2012 ‘Henry Thomas and Kathleen Kennedy Talk E.T. The Extra-Terrestial, Jurassic Park 4, Lincoln, Steven Spielberg, and More’ interview with the Collider website. (Found by Cobra Kai - here)

Interviewer: ‘When it came out on DVD, there was the special edition version that had some notable changes (walkie-talkies in the government agents hands instead of guns, sanctifying certain dialogue exchanges) but the Blu-ray reverts back to the original version. What brought about that decision?’

Kathleen Kennedy: ‘To be perfectly honest, I think Steven always regretted having made the decision to do anything to the film. I think he was feeling a certain amount of pressure to be politically correct. And then he realized that it maybe wasn’t the correct [decision]. I think most fans and most people who like classic movies that have stood the test of time, don’t want them to be tinkered with.

^ Wow. Yep, you got it absolutely spot on there, Kathleen…

And many of us would also just like to be able to have the option of buying and watching an official release of the old ‘untinkered with’ classic Original Trilogy movies on a quality modern digital format.

Lucasfilm Boss Kathleen Kennedy Expected to Retire This Year’:-

www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/star-wars-kathleen-kennedy-lucasfilm-1235282440

'After more than a decade in a galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy is charting a course toward retirement. The Lucasfilm boss has told associates she plans to retire by the end of 2025, Puck reported Monday night.

Reps for Kennedy and Lucasfilm were not immediately available for comment.

Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside Star Wars creator George Lucas, and a few months later took the reins after Disney paid $4 billion for the company and Lucas exited.

She relaunched the franchise, beginning with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), which grossed more than $2 billion globally and reinvigorated the property as a big screen brand. Disney released a Star Wars film every year from 2015-2019 and then took a pause following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which received a mixed response and earned just half of what Force Awakens had brought in just a few years earlier.

As Lucasfilm boss, Kennedy held one of the most visible and scrutinized jobs in Hollywood, and it was not always smooth sailing. She fired Chris Lord and Phil Miller as directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story in the middle of production. (The film went on to be the first Star Wars movie to lose money theatrically.) She also sidelined Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards, replacing him with Tony Gilroy, who was brought on to oversee reshoots. (The film became a $1 billion hit). Other projects were promised that never materialized, such as Rian Johnson’s trilogy, and another one overseen by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Benioff and David Weiss. Daisy Ridley’s upcoming return to Star Wars has been languishing in development since being announced to fanfare almost two years ago.

But even as Star Wars struggled to return to the big screen, the franchise found newfound life on Disney+, with The Mandalorian launching in November 2019 along with the streaming service. It became a breakout hit, spawning multiple spinoffs, including the critically acclaimed Andor, which returns for a second season in April, as well multiple shows that failed to hit the zeitgeist and sparked worries of diluting the Star Wars brand.

Coming up, Lucasfilm has The Mandalorian and Grogu from director Jon Favreau due out May 22, 2026 as the first big screen outing for the franchise since Rise of Skywalker.

Kennedy’s storied career includes work with Steven Spielberg and husband Frank Marshall, with collaborations including Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Gremlins (1984), The Color Purple (1985), The Goonies (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990) and the Indiana Jones films, which concluded with last year’s Dial of Destiny. In all, she has produced or executive produced more than 70 films and been nominated for eight Oscars.

The news comes ahead of April’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where the future of the Star Wars franchise is expected to be unveiled.’

A thousand toxic politicised click-bait youtube channels rejoice in the fact after 10 years… they’re finally correct in claiming Kennedy will leave Lucasfilm… and will be shortly putting up new content (including thumbnails of Kathleen Kennedy with red laser eyes) to let everyone know they were ‘right’ all along. 😉

Serious-wise… an interesting line at the end of the article where it states 'April’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, where the future of the Star Wars franchise is expected to be unveiled.'…

27th February Edit: the above article from The Hollywood Reporter - and Puck - was incorrect (once again)

Kathleen Kennedy Speaks On Her Lucasfilm Plans — She Is Not Soon Retiring — & The Films That Will Keep Her In ‘Star Wars’ Orbit For Years To Come - a sit-down interview with Kathleen Kennedy herself, at Deadline.

Kathleen Kennedy…

“The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring. What’s happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob and Alan about what eventual succession might look like. We have an amazing bench of people here, and we have every intention of making an announcement months or a year down the road. We are in lockstep as to what that’s going to be, and I am continuing. I’m producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I’m also producing Shawn Levy’s movie, which is after that. So I’m continuing to stay at Lucasfilm and looking very thoughtfully with Bob and Alan as to who’s stepping in. So that is all underway, and we have every right to make that announcement when we want to make it.”

The whole Deadline interview linked above is well worth a read.

After all those click-bait style thumbnails over the years I’m still not convinced it’s true this time. They just changed fired to retired, and it’s already been reported as speculation. Who are Puck News?

https://variety.com/2025/film/news/star-wars-kathleen-kennedy-exit-lucasfilm-1236319794/

She intends to retire after her current contract ends, according to a source with knowledge of her plans. A separate source close to Kennedy, however, dismissed the initial report by Puck as “pure speculation” and said nothing has been decided.

Hopefully, the news is true, and Kathleen Kennedy will be leaving Lucasfilm soon (which could go a long way towards the eventual release of the actual Original Trilogy). But if, for some reason, she tries to hang around for longer, I will just have to take solace in the fact that she won’t live forever.
