BFI to screen Star Wars 1977 Theatrical Version

This is very interesting news, I wonder how this came about. Good on them over at the BFI for wrangling it. Of course it’s also going to make everyone wonder if a home media release will finally be legal. I have to be skeptical and imagine that Disney only will allow this as a museum piece or for festival screenings…

Opening night – Star Wars (Thursday 12th June)

An unmissable treat for Star Wars fans. A long time ago, George Lucas’s original space fantasy set in a galaxy far, far away was released in 1977, captivating countless imaginations for generations to come and forever shifting popular culture. Film on Film presents Star Wars exactly as experienced by audiences on its original release, screening from one of the precious handful of dye transfer IB Technicolor prints produced for the first British release, preserved in the BFI National Archive.

On display to coincide with the opening night screening there is also a rare opportunity to view material from the original continuity script for Star Wars, which includes rare on-set Polaroids, annotations and deleted scenes. The script is from the collection of Ann Skinner, script editor on the original film, and is now cared for by the BFI National Archive.

The prints in this year’s programme have many stories to tell. There’s the original, unfaded dye transfer IB Technicolor British release print of Star Wars (1977), preserved in the BFI National Archive, and ready to transport us to a long time ago, and a galaxy far, far away, back to the moment in 1977 when George Lucas’s vision cast a spell on cinema audiences.

The whole article is well worth a read - and great to see BFI continuing to showcase many rare films and format variances.

Definitely have to try and get to this. The BFI do a quality job preserving and restoring various films in all formats - as anyone who has been to their many previous screenings and film festivals will attest.

On-sale dates

BFI Patrons – Tuesday 6 May (from 12:00)

BFI Members – Wednesday 7 May (from 12:00)

General sale – Friday 9 May (from 12:00)

Full details will be listed on the BFI website from Monday 28th April. (www.bfi.org.uk)

Article on The Grauniad: Star Wars original cut to be screened this summer in London

James Bell, senior curator of fiction at the BFI National Archive, said: “One of the ambitions of the BFI Film on Film Festival is to screen original release prints that transport audiences back to the moment a film was first released – to give audiences of today the special emotional connection that comes when viewing the very same object seen by a film’s original audience.

“In the case of Star Wars, the festival screening is a unique opportunity to present the film to audiences in exactly the same form as they would have watched it in 1977.”

The BFI said Lucasfilm and Disney had granted permission for the original version to be screened. There are no plans to show the original cuts of The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi.

I hope you all enjoy the screening I live in the US and nowhere near Baltimore where the first of these types of screenings happened, or California where the film academy screened theirs.

‘… a unique opportunity to present the film to audiences in exactly the same form as they would have watched it in 1977.’

Wow, Disney should take that sentence and use it as a marketing slogan to release the theatrical cuts. Is there any chance Disney could change their attitude (aka goodwill towards GL) once Kathleen Kennedy leaves Lucasfilm? I mean she is the last staff in a leading position with former personal connections to Lucas.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

I personally do not think that Disney will consider releasing the unaltered cuts until after George dies.

Any way to watch the original trilogy is valid, but the way they were released in the theaters is the best way to watch it.

Exciting stuff!!!

Do we know if this BFI screening of the 1977 Star Wars will be the same version as the one on the ‘GOUT’ DVD, or are there any differences in the print they’re showing?

Well it’s a 1977 IB Tech Print, it has the original crawl and presumably the 1977 stereo mix instead of the 1993 stereo remix on the GOUT. It’s obviously going to be vastly superior to the GOUT in terms of picture quality since it’s a 35mm print only a few generations away from the negative with unfaded colour as opposed to the non anamorphic laserdisc transfer on the GOUT.

Author
Time

Yeah GOUT is just a laserdisc rip, basically junk.

Author
Time

Yeah highly doubt they’re gonna screen a non-anamorphic transfer that’s below DVD quality on a big screen.

Gout is better than composite master its component d1 master tape, but its not suitable in modern parlance for anything.

its 4:2:2 Component. Most laserdisc masters were composite D2 tape. and some were Digibeta. No theater is showing a laserdisc.

I would love to know how Lucas feels about this! 😂

He’s given mixed signs as of late - very defensive of the SEs around Cannes last year, but he also “gave his blessing” to the two screenings of the 70mm Academy print in LA, so who knows. Bizarrely, I saw some people on twitter upset that they’re “going against George’s vision” or whatever. People are so stupid, they don’t even realize they should also respect 1977 George Lucas’ vision. I’m very happy we’re getting more screenings popping up, it does seem like the air is getting clearer for some of these original prints to maybe see the light of day, and then, perhaps as a pipe dream, the potential public release.

If it’s a Technicolor IB print, see the distant past for what that’s like: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Free-farewell-Screening-of-1977-Star-Wars-collectors-print-British-IB-Technicolor/id/11733/page/1

I don’t have twitter but I’d love to see some of those posts hahaha

It’d be intriguing to see if the print has the same slight cropping as 4K77’s main print.

I hope this lights a fire under Lucasfilm/Disney’s ass to finally release the unaltered OT officially . One thing I have been seeing posted a lot about this by various sites online and social media that is annoying though ,is a lot of them keep using headlines like . " first time its been shown in 48 years ,or half a century etc " …which is simply not true .

I’m actually doing a podcast episode at the National Archives where they keep the dye-transfer print. So I should have some more news about its origins soon. I’m there early May and turning the episode around in 24 hours to line up with the tickets going on sale. If you’re planning on going, make some time for something I’m doing with my friend Doug at BFI too. A little talk on something you may like…

Nice, look forward to hearing that podcast Jambe Davdar and hopefully getting a ticket for here in the UK and seeing what film stock version they are using and how it may differ if at all to fan edit preservation projects.

Good luck to the pair of you - hope you’re both successful. Please keep us posted how you get on with it. 👍

The whole film festival looks really intriguing and if it anything like their previous film festivals you’re hopefully in for a treat. The BFI certainly know how to put on a good show - and their love of film and respect for film fans really comes across.

Even their old outdoor film screenings are something else - and so much thought and work goes into them.

The blurb: For this early release of the podcast, I’m taking you behind the scenes at the BFI National Archive in Berkhamsted. The reason for the early drop? Tickets for the BFI’s excellent Film on Film Festival go on sale to the public tomorrow, 9th May 2025, and I wanted to give you a bit of insight into what makes this event so special. The Film on Film Festival runs from the 12th to the 15th of June and is dedicated entirely to screenings on physical film – from 35mm to 16mm, and even nitrate. It’s a rare opportunity to experience films as they were originally shown, in all their analogue glory. While at the archive, I spoke with several of the experts who help make the festival possible and who work daily to preserve the history of cinema. You’ll hear from:

James Bell – Senior Curator of Fiction and Programme Director, Film on Film Festival
Chris Stenner – Film Laboratory Lead
Sonia Genaitay – Curatorial Archivist
Martin Coffill – Projectionist and QC
David Jones – Film Scanning Lead

A huge thanks to Kieron Webb and Sarah Bemand for organising the day. It was a real privilege to explore the archive, meet the people who keep the machines running and the prints in circulation, and to share it all with you here. If you’re attending the festival on the 12th, please do let me know and be sure to say “hi”.’ - Jamie Benning.
