Info: A CALL TO ARMS FOR THE X0 PROJECT! (was: A SPARK OF HOPE...)

Ay, chihuahua! The announcement of the official OOT is cool, but it’s got to be a mixed blessing for the boys at the X0 Project!

I’m thinkin’ I (we all?) would still pay good money for an X0 Project transfer before ponying up for any official release, so I’m planning to make another “don’t give up now!” donation. I really hope there’s life in the Project yet, even though I could totally see packing up shop as an option.

I can’t help but think that if it wasn’t for organized efforts like The X0 Project, LFL might not be releasing the OOT at all, let alone this year. I figure it’s worth a tip of my hat and a dip into my wallet to acknowledge the pioneer (Pioneer?) spirit and contributions thus far of a bunch of people willing to hang it all out there by investing time, effort and wads of cash into something superlative that we are all lookin’ forward to.

Donations would not be a bad idea and well deserved, but I don't know if it should be considered "A Spark of Hope."

I tip my hat to the X0 team and their dedication, but I am sure that they would all agree that their sacrifice for this SUCCESSFUL CAUSE (WooHoo!!!) is miniscule in comparison to the pain and suffering (hence the need of HOPE) for the other causes for "Spark."

Not belittling the efforts of the X0 team mind you. We all know the money, talent and effort it took for the team to get as far as they did... It would be a calling to help a mere inconvenience rather than a cry for a Hope that should never be lost.

I am just glad all of this happened before all of the T-shirts got printed! LOL!

I bet if the X0 project were still to continue, theirs would be a lot better than anything Lucasfilm would produce. I was really looking forward to those t-shirts too.

I agree...as happy as i am to knwo that there will be an official release of the O-OT, i can't haelp but wonder what will they screw up this time?

will there be another color 'correction' snafu? will the sound mix be reversed again? will they screw things up in a new and exciting way???

of course all will be known in September, but something tells me that the X0 project may still have a purpose

I think there are a fair few of us who won't be putting our faith in LFL to get this next money-spinning release 'right'...

Surely the X0 Project will go on...

Well, I sure hope the XO project keeps going. I much prefer fan edits as they are done out of a love and respect for the material than for profit. You get a much better product in the end. Also, Lucas will never get another red cent out of me. And if they don't make any XO t-shirts, well, I'll just have to fan-edit one of my own!

If nothing else, it will provide a very good comparison to the official dvd's that are released. If Lucasfilm is aware of the X0 project (and I think they are), this puts pressure on them to deliver because the discs will be scrutinized carefully.

Wow. Such respect. I guess you've only been at these boards this whole time to silently poke fun at us and hope for this day to happen?

So nice to finally see your true colors.

Mebejedi (and the rest of the X0 team),

To paraphrase the lyrics, "Don't let the bastards bring you down." The X0 project is the realization of a dream not only for you, but most of us on this board. You have my full support and I definitely want to see, and possess, the end product. Not only the initial laserdisc transfer, but the penultimate, "cleaned-up" version as well. (Rotoscoping, here we come. WHOO HOO!)

I also have Devilman's comment "what will they screw up this time?" in the back of my head. So to the X0 guys, just keep on truckin'!

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

I too would like to see the what X0 could have come up with, just to see how good it really will be,but IF GL does this set right, nothing we could do will even come close to what HE can do,i am sure HIS equipment is way better than anything any one here can afford, either way i cant wait for this September release, will X0 ANH be ready by then also?

I'm sure even the official OOT DVDs will have plenty of room for (fan) improvment.

I, for one, plan on making my own evil hybrid versions with what I consider the best of both worlds. Or, if the picture and sound are subpar, will attempt to use them to De-SE the 2004 DVDs. The source material should be good enough, no matter what they use to master it.

It's really too early to plan anything, so this is just a brainstorm.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I have a two-month vacation coming up in 3 weeks. Not that I can devote all this time to the X0 files, but certainly a lot more than I've been able to lately. At the very least, I can stay up late again without having to worry about the next morning.

The X0 Project should never, ever die. Let it go totally underground if it needs to.

With the crap that went on with the special edition DVDs, I'd bet my car that the X0 project is better than anything Lucasfilm could crank out relating to the original trilogy.

Yeah, I am really disappointed.

I WOULDN'T CONSIDER THIS A "SPARK OF HOPE." I WOULD CONSIDER THIS A "JOIN THE REBELLION." EVERYBODY WHO IS INVOLVED WITH THE XO PROJECT NEEDS TO PM ME WITH WHAT IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT FINANCIALLY. ONCE I HAVE THAT INFORMATION I WILL SEE ABOUT STARTING A "THE REBELLION STARTS HERE" THREAD WHERE WE WILL TAKE UP DONATIONS TO HELP THE PROJECT.

I'm looking forward to the X0 Project. I'm of the opinion that the members working on the X0 have a respect for the films and that they will produce a preservation which will shine because of they understand the material. All the preservation projects have their +/-, but to adequately discuss them you need to see them, I look forward to watching. Take your time, do it the way you think is appropriate, with the resources you've got.

I know I said goodbye to these forums in the official DVD thread, but I can't let the X0 project die. As some other posters have said, GL could possibly F-up the official releases and then what? I'll hopefully be starting a good job soon so I'll pitch in what I can.

Of course I'd love to be proven wrong and have the offical DVDs be the only ones i'll ever watch, but it still would be nice to have the X0 as a comparison

It has already been said officially that the quality wont be as good as the 04 versions. Really, I cannot imagine this set being anything great. I never bought the 2004s but I borrowed them from a friend and they are awful and the 04s are Lucas' definitives, how do you think the quality will be on the old versions that don't exsist anymore and cannot possibly be made? I am sure he is only releasing it to milk a bit more off the DVD format, to spit in the faces of the buyers of the previous two DVD releases and because he sees efforts like X0 trying to do it unofficially. Also I have to say it is disappointing to see someone who has been such a big part of this community as ocp acting like such an ass. The X0 team have really thrown a lot of their time, money and effort into this and all he can say is "ha ha you guys got owned!" I guess the rest of us will be "LOL"ing when he realizes the official DVDs are little better than VHS to DVD transfers. Time will tell. But one way or the other, long live the X0 project. And honestly, I can't wait for the T-shirts.

I wouldn't read too much into what ocp said here... it got a laugh out of me, but I don't think it was meant to crap on the XO project. I'm sure Garrett was making a bit of a self-deprecating joke, because it's as much on him as it is the rest of us and the XO project. His humor may not always play well with other people's humor, but he's still one of us.

The real point is, didn't we *want* an official release to come out and render the XO project moot, even if we didn't expect that to happen at this point? I know I did, as much as I respect and applaud the extreme effort that has gone into the project. The whole point of the project seemed to me to be providing for ourselves what LFL wasn't providing. Now that they are (apparently) going to provide it, we can say 'mission accomplished' when it arrives.

But that doesn't mean the project has to end. Perhaps this announcement has taken some of the wind out of the sails, but there's no reason the XO project can't still be carried out. If nothing else, it will be the best representation of the laserdisc transfers that we will ever have on DVD, and unless that's a carbon copy of what LFL is doing (and I really don't think it is), there's no reason to abandon it.
