And yet…you’re on a fanedit forum. The idea of fanedits seems to deeply confuse you and you seem to hate them, so I have to ask why you’re even here. If you want to talk about how perfect every official Star Wars product is, there’s an entire section of the forum for that. But it’s not here.

It’s one thing to fan edit. It’s another to refuse criticism of what exactly you’re editing.

Bold, intriguing idea. One milder spin on it could be that Obi-Wan sincerely thinks Anakin killed the younglings because he finds the bodies with lightsaber wounds (inflicted by Sidious himself), then finds the hologram of Sidious telling Anakin to “bring peace to the Empire” (maybe with the implication being the Jedi bugged the Chancellor’s office, further highlighting how morally-compromised the Order has become), and draws an understandable but erroneous conclusion with disastrous consequences.

That’s a possibility, though it may become too confusing. The cleanest idea would probably be to just cut Yoda’s line about the lightsaber wounds.

Rewatching the scene of Obi-wan confronting Padme, the camera really focuses on Obi-wan as he speaks about the Younglings. It’s interesting how he turns away from Padme and partially covers his mouth, presumably because the truth is too horrible to say outright but it also feels a lot like the character’s half-truth in ANH about Anakin’s death. That Obi-wan is even now willing to twist the truth to persuade leads right into the OT.

That’s a very intriguing idea, since it seems to fit his character in ANH. Almost like the beginning of him needing to spin the truth regarding anakin starting with Padme. Interesting.

There is a way to provide meaningful criticism and debate an issue without doing it in a rude way.

You act like your ideas are better than anyone else’s and then turn into a defensive ass when anyone calls you out on how you are rudely criticizing something.

You are the definition of an internet troll and it amazes me that the moderators of this site have let you go on for so long.

When I initially post the criticism in the first place, it doesn’t seem rude, more like pointing out what it’s missing or how it’ll negatively affect the movie/edit. Think of how a parent calls out their child for doing something wrong, or something similar with authorities and people who’re unintentionally breaking laws. I’m sure you guys have good intentions, but I’m just trying to let you see the bigger picture here.

When? Name a few examples.

This explains enough about your issue.

You need to understand that not everyone will agree with your criticisms and being rude won’t help your case at all.

Perhaps there should be a dedicated thread for edits that only change the filmmaking, rather than the story itself?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”

Instead of just complaining how it ruins the original film and how it is “wrong” to do, try explaining your points in a more logical way. Make your case without being rude to other people’s ideas. Change A could actually hurt the message of the original film for Reason A, Reason B and Reason C.

Part of fanediting is about changing the message of the film itself. Some changes may not just be to change the effect of a shot but part of the story, and you need to get better at respecting that faneditors do not care about the original message, they are trying to make their own message with the given material.

When you are making comments explaining to someone what a plot hole is, that’s degrading. Anyone on this site knows what that is, and by doing so, it makes you look like a dick.

And of course, he’s coming right from the temple massacre and knows Anakin has sided with Sidious. So even if Anakin didn’t pull out a lightsaber in the temple I imagine he’s still almost as much at fault in Obi-wan’s estimation.

JEDIT: Another small benefit is that Anakin’s sword is no longer the Youngling Slayer 3000 which makes TheRiseofSkywalkerslighlylessreprehensibleohwhoamIkiddingnothingisgoingtomatterthere

Hmm… It’s one thing to change a message, but make it weaker or muddy it? One opposition I had was that hinting at Palpatine in TFA or TLJ could hurt the latter’s themes of hope, for the reason… well, I felt like there wouldn’t be a reason to be hopeful since Palps is just gonna come back and shit on everything (I’m leaning towards the middle, and I’m not so sure about whether it does or not).

Similarly I pointed out that I felt like removing Finn’s interest in telling Rey his secret would make his arc of moving on from her and letting her go weaker. Or when we talked about the Luke puppet show, I was essentially saying that it’d make it less about the galaxy itself and more about Luke’s actions. We all have our own interests in what seem like good ideas but feel like it should be stronger due to its supposed importance but (sometimes) not feeling too impactful enough in the actual cut.

EDIT: A goal of filmmaking is to make sure it resonates enough with the audience. For example, I also pointed out that changing Leia’s saber to purple could make the themes of the Skywalker legacy weaker, more specifically the symbolism of Rey using “Skywalker” to defeat Palpatine.

When you are making comments explaining to someone what a plot hole is, that’s degrading. Anyone on this site knows what that is, and by doing so, it makes you look like a dick.

Apologies. The definition of a plot hole has been muddied over the years, from “Character doing X instead of Y” or an unresolved plot thread or something that isn’t even explained.

Consultants exist for a reason when writing a story, same with film critics. So you wouldn’t make writing mistakes.

I don’t know if I posted this on here before, because I had this idea months ago, but I like the idea that Anakin and Padme aren’t, like, soulmates or whatever like the movies imply, but they just kind of have the hots for each other. Their love is “forbidden” because it would be a bad idea if two people from such radically different walks of life got together, it just wouldn’t work out. But they get together one night in a moment of passion, and if you screw with the timeline a little, the reason they stick together is because they accidentally conceived Luke and Leia.

That honestly sounds much fucking better than what we got.

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

I think the key idea Testing misses is that everyone else knows that some edit ideas have pros and cons, it’s just that they’ve independently made the judgement that the pros outweigh the cons for the specific purpose of their fanedit.

Like Leia’s lightsaber being purple in Ascendant: yes, it does make it less similar to Anakin’s saber and thus perhaps slightly less Skywalker-y if you’re really clutching at straws, but it also a) is a nice tribute to Carrie Fisher, b) better distinguishes the two lightsabers on Exegol so they’re easier to keep track of, c) breaks up the sea of blue on Exegol, d) makes Leia’s saber distinct from Anakin’s in the same way Luke’s green saber is, etc. I wouldn’t use that change for my own fanedit because I generally prefer to stick with canon saber colours, but there are many compelling arguments for it, and having one possible downside doesn’t instantly negate all of those.

At the end of the day, fanedits are alternate versions of the movie. We’re not sat here planning the new Official Special Editions to forever replace the originals. It doesn’t really matter if someone wants to make a change that you personally think ruins the movie because you don’t have to watch their fanedit. This is all doubly true for ideas like the one Nerevar is floating, where the whole point is that it’s a big change to the movie and the fun is in discussing how it would work and what the ramifications would be - it’s not being proposed as a definite total net improvement that must be implemented. It’s more of a “What if?”.

It’s also extremely condescending to act like any one person’s ideas about the films are the only correct ones. Star Wars has always been somewhat open to interpretation and means lots of different things to different people. This is true of all film (and art in general). It’s not even uncommon for art to resonate with people for reasons entirely unintended by the creators: Data in Star Trek has been seen as a relatable character for autistic people even though he was never written that way deliberately; and similarly Dax’s struggles as a character who used to be in a man’s body but is now in a woman’s body is something trans people relate to, even though that wasn’t necessarily on the writers’ minds in the late 90s. There’s no right answer, and insisting there is and that everyone else must just be stupid is just a really unfortunate lack of empathy.

Even if David Lynch sat down one day and suddenly explained at great length the reasoning behind every decision he’d ever made in his films and TV shows, people would still continue to discuss their own personal take-aways and ideas, right?

Also, this bloody hypocritical argument:

We’re taking movie canon, here.

Test, you’ve argued yourself so many times about how you’re supposed to infer things without needing them spelt out for you.

Well, which one is it? Are inexplicit things plot holes, or are implicit inferences canon?

You seem to have real trouble accepting that others have different perspectives, you defend your own point of view strongly whilst putting others’ down with condescension, and then when called out on it CONSTANTLY, you just double down on the condescension.

You’ve got to work with this community, not against it.

Again, so you guys’ll listen.

It is a shame you don’t seem to be listening.

Your passion and energy for discussing Star Wars is a welcome addition to the site - in the Star Wars discussion sections. As has been explained previously… they are not suited to the Fan Edit sections - nor is your attitude, tone and demeanour towards Edits and Editors.

Despite multiple suggestions, requests, explanations, and warnings… all of which have seemingly gone unheeded… you still persist.

Take some time away from here to reflect on the contrasting approaches to Editing, the wide-ranging styles, differing aims and goals, the nuances of it. To say nothing of the dedication and resoluteness of many editors, as well as others involved and helping out on the edits - from people all over the world… all with differing ideas and opinions; all coming together to make something different, alternative, or simply more in-keeping with their expectations or wishes. Maybe even to just enjoy or experience an edit from a different point of view.

Hopefully the posts, thoughts, and suggestions by members on here who took the time out to engage and illustrate that to you will also sink in.
