The First Order uses color-reversed TIE Fighters, so color-reversed guards would fit. The Shadow Guards also use lightsabers and The Force.

I liked Lost Stars and Bloodline.
And some of the new Marvel comics. But the quality varies. A lot of it is rubbish. But they are putting out a lot of material and very fast. So much so that the art quality is often mediocre. But there are some gems in there. I liked the old EU and Dark Horse comics more. But i’m not kidding myself into thinking all of it was great. After all it was tie in fiction.

I liked Tom Veitch Tales of the Jedi contributions to the old EU more than what became of the series after Kevin Anderson took it over.i really love Dark Empire despite people hating it. Although Luke and Ulic’s stories are too similar. The same descent into the heart of darkness to conquer the dark side from within.

I like Dark Empire. It was just reprinted by Marvel, and looks to be the definitive printing.

I won’t know if it is as good as the original printing in terms of paper quality until my copy arrives.

I found that my first edition is ruined by a coffee stain, and i cannot afford to replace it. So i assume the newest printing will do.

I don’t own any original 1991 copies of Dark Empire, but I assumed they were printed on newsprint paper?

I only own the 2003 TPB (in English anyway) which is very nice though a tad too “bright” IMO (as most modern reprints tend to be). The newsprint used for the Norwegian issues I’ve had since I was kid however really does the dark-colours of Cam Kennedy’s art proper justice.

I never had the 2003 edition, mine was the first impression first printing from 1993. Glossy Shiny Paper. The colorist used quite garish colors. I have no idea who the colorist was, i always assumed it was Pamela Rambo but its not stated.

I decided to buy the Boxtree version instead of the new Marvel printing. I like Dark Empire not sure i 40 dollars like Dark Empire. I also don’t need Dark Empire II already have it. Don’t need the supplements, just want a reading copy in new shape without coffee stains.

I also just got Dark Horse Comics TPB for Tales of the Jedi. I have the Sith War. Just need to find Dark Lords of the Sith.

Also trying to find Boba Fett Enemy of the Empire at a decent price. Same for Mara Jade by the Emperor’s Hand and Shadows of the Empire TPB. I used to have all of these i have no idea what happened to them. Maybe someone borrowed them and never returned them.

Just got my Boxtree first printing of Dark Empire it is slightly less tall than the us edition also on lousy quality non glossy paper. Very disappointed. The only positive is the content is identical to the first US printing, but it looks so muddy i feel like i wasted 25 dollars. In fact its on worse paper than the original run of comics of which i own the first edition of issue #1. Now i’m tempted to get the Epic Collection from Marvel to compare.

Why would you want glossy paper for something that wasn’t originally printed on glossy paper?

I haven’t read the boxtree edition of DE so I can’t really tell how “muddy” it is compared to the original issues, and it’s obviously a flaw if it’s worse, but I don’t see how glossy paper is necessarily the “solution”. I own the Norwegian translation of DE from the late 90’s and they were printed on fairly pulpy paper and I’d say that’s quite appropriate for the series and probably what quite close to Cam Kennedy had in mind while doing the colours. That is unless the original six issue run was done on something fancy like Baxter paper? I know there was a lot of experimenting done at that time.

You might want to get a hold of The 2003 TPB. It is on fairly glossy paper, and I personally think it looks artificially bright, but it’s a lot better IMO than a lot of modern Marvel reprints which always seem excessively bright and cheaply printed to me (i.e. the ink easily smudges, etc).

Just got my Tales of the Jedi. Almost mint accept for a minor blemish on the top of the front cover. First Dark Horse printing.Having a hard time finding The Freedon Nadd Uprising and Dark Lords of the Sith.
On the hunt for Boba Fett Enemy of the Empire, Mara Jade by the Emperor’s hand.

I’m trying to finish my shelf of first editions. I do have Heir to the Empire TPB, don’t have Dark Force Rising or the Last Command. But i do have the hardcover reprint of all 3. Which is not comic sized.

I’m very tempted to get the Magazine serialized version of Dark Empire. In the oversized format, or the Gold printings of 1-6 in the 5000 print run. But the content is the same.

I decided to get the epic collection for Dark Empire, and for Boba Fett Enemy of the Empire.

The reprint of the Zahn trilogy is out of stock at the original price, the same for Mara Jade by the Emperor’s hand.

Was hoping they reprinted Dark Lords of the Sith but Marvel hasn’t. I also don’t understand the deal with them, why do a limited amount of copies of a certain book, and wanting you to get the digital edition when it is sold out. I don’t do digital comics.

I also just got the 1993 Gold Variant set of Dark Empire i hope its worth it. I have no idea what the quality of the print or paper is.

Out of curiosity, where did you get the Gold Variant set of Dark Empire? I went hunting for Dark Empire a few months ago and couldn’t find anywhere to buy any single issues of it for a price that isn’t comically high. I did manage to get the Boxtree collection, which I think is from 1994, but the cover isn’t particularly nice.

Ebay. It was a over a hundred dollars as you said astronomically high. I feel like a fool but i i’ve wanted them since the 1990s and i never bought them when i could find them for cheaper.

Still not as much as buying Star Wars number 1 and all of Marvel Star Wars before online sales, i had to go all over to many comic shops to find first printings.

addendum:

I’m really disappointed in the Marvel Epic Collection Dark Empire, the paper is terrible the thickness of the book won’t allow it to lie flat, looks like they printed a digital comic or file and its horribly over bright.

I should’ve stuck to collecting the printings of Dark Horse first editions. Now its too late to cancel the Boba Fett reprinting i also purchased, and i’m sure it will have the same horrible magazine paper. Which isn’t right for a trade edition of a book, nor is the lack of a decent cardstock for the cover. If Marvel thinks this is acceptable they’ve truly gone done hill. It looks like a bargain edition except at 40 dollars msrp for volume its anything but.

Edit: the Boba Fett Enemy of the Empire reprinting is fantastic and on high quality paper, so i have no idea what happened to Dark Empire.

I’m a little surprised Dark Empire doesn’t have its own dedicated thread on here - especially considering how popular it still is.

A quick look at the EU Index and there only seems to be threads on here for Thrawn (7-8 threads on them), Revan, Crimson Empire, SOTE, and The High Republic project.

(Tobar’s Fan Web Series of Dark Empire thread) apart, of course.)

If anyone fancies knocking up a thread or two on some of the more mainstream or popular EU book & comic series, please feel free…

I’m a newcomer to Dark Empire and will start reading it for the first time soon. I’d appreciate a thread like this to update with my thoughts and so on!

I just got issues 1-10 of the UK Dark Horse comics magazine. It has Dark Empire 1-6, tales of the Jedi, Indiana Jones, Classic Star Wars. Oversized comic mag. The Al Williamson stuff is fantastic.

I still remember collecting those issues of Classic Star Wars, by far my favorite Star Wars anything except for the first 3 movies. Still have my Russ Cochrane publishing set. Its in Black and White, but it has the full size pages of the newspaper strips. Signed by Al and Archie who both have passed. I always wanted to meet Al and i sadly never got the chance.

There is something pure about the serialized adventures in those comics. You can tell Al was a big fan of movie serials.

I have to revisit the original Marvel Star Wars i haven’t read them since i bought the A Long Time Ago, volumes. Sadly they never finished the series. Return of the Jedi adaptation with the original colors wasn’t reprinted. The rest were faithful to the original print with facsimile colors by Digital Chameleon.

I think Marvel did another printing which is also “remastered” and isn’t the original colors. I have to see if the hardback volumes are the original in the complete Marvel years.

addendum:
Decided to get the Hardback reprinting of ROTJ comics adaptation just to see if its the original non recolored dark horse, or Disney versions. I wasn’t able to find any samples online beyond some youtube videos.

If it is indeed a facsimile of the original then i can consider my along time ago volumes and this printing complete the original run of comics in my collection, which i can read other than the comics themselves which are on newsprint and i don’t want to damage them.

I was able to affordably get the Complete Marvel Years volume 2 and 3. The first volume, volume 1, the one i really want is out of print. That one has every comic from Star Wars #1 and up til the end of the Empire Strikes Back adaptation. But its also going for for hundreds of dollars now not the 90 bucks it was going for. These are really nice hardback printings. But they are not reprinted at full size, for every book in the Omnibus.

Edit: finally got complete Marvel Years volume 3. This book is huge and impressive. And Jedi is indeed the original colors. The Cover gallery is disappointing though, no full page reproductions in a gallery style. I forgot how cool Lumiya’s first appearance was.

Just got the reprint of Dark Lords of the Sith from Lucas books.

I forgot just how bad the art was on this series. In comparison to the first book and the Sith War. But the covers are all amazing. Of course Hugh Fleming is always amazing.

I got the Marvel Epic collection reprint of Empire Strikes Back arriving tomorrow. Star Wars is like 40 bucks so i don’t have that one yet. There is also one other book i need to get to collect all the books from the first volume Complete Marvel Years.

The books are quite good as far as reprints go. I hate the Legends logo slapped on the books though. Its really ugly on the slipcover on the hardback that has Boba Fett on the cover.

Don’t have the artists edition of Empire by Al Williamson, or the artifact edition of Star Wars. They look really cool though and are the original art pages photographed in black and white. The Chaykin/Infantino stuff is awesome.

Addendum: decided to get the reprint of Star Wars now i only need that one other book in between Star wars and Empire Strikes Back to complete the reprint of the original Marvel run.

additional note: the Marvel reprints have very bad color registration and poor paper, worse in the trade paperback than the hardback. For the original marvel run versus the dark horse a long time ago volumes. The new editions look very digital and flat. I was pleased with the hardbacks despite the poor paper, but the reprint of Star Wars is very poor and empire reprint is so so.

Just got the remastered comics adaptation trilogy of the OT for 12 bucks. Its all recolored and they’ve made some edits. I’m not really sure what to think of it honestly. Lucasfilm/Marvel reasoning seems kind of suspect, as does choosing the Special Edition comic for the 40th anniversary and reprinting that instead of doing a 40th of the Chaykin book.

It doesn’t upset me very much though because the fact no one bought it means i can get a copy for ten bucks in hardback. Barreto is a great artist too bad it hews to the remake with Han shooting second.

I like that the older EU is still in print and can be found on bookstore shelves and libraries . A lot of good stuff , a lot of bad and some mediocre stuff out there both old and new . My personal favorite EU story is the original Marvel Star Wars comics issues 58-63 from 1982 , detailing the rebels finding a new base on a forest world ( second guessing ROTJ for the second time ) and the Shira Brie arc . I consider those 6 issues to be like a movie in my head and would love to see an animated " legends " movie adaptation in the style of the DC animated movies . Also liked the first Dark Empire series , but only the first one . The OG Thrawn Trilogy , Tales Of The Jedi , I, Jedi and The New Jedi Order . From the new stuff , I enjoyed Bloodline by Claudia Gray , Rey’s survival guide , Empire’s End Trilogy by Chuck Wendig , Some of the Vader comics and Doctor Aphra , The Lando comic series and The Obi-Wan and Anakin comic

By far my favourite thing about that trilogy [Thrawn] is the characters. It handles the OT characters beautifully and many of the new ones are all-time favourites of mine - Mara Jade, Thrawn, Garm Bel Iblis, Talon Karrde. I love them all.

I agree the endings to both storylines seems to happen very quickly, but I do think they’re great endings.

Very much this, and one of the many strong points in the early EU books and comics.

That is the next series of book I’m hoping to read. Really looking forward to it.

I also like that some of older EU is easy to find and can be found quite cheap as well!

Tales of the Jedi is being reprinted in June by Marvel i’m looking to that more than the Disney book with Luke and Lando that bookends Rise of Skywalker.
