I suppose that could work as well. That way you just trade them moving around in the sand while shooting for them staying still.
Frankly, I think it would benefit from both changes. Cutting down to just Rey shooting would reduce some of the literal and figurative noise of the scene; and having a brief pause before they start sinking would let the audience catch their breath for a moment before the next action beat.

I like it myself. I just know that for others they might not like the idea that Rey can hit a flying target like that so easily.
It’s cool that you hear the explosion of the trooper echo throughout the valley.

Just for my $0.02c on the Rey bullseye cut, my thinking was that Rey and Kylo by this film are already basically superheroes. She bullseyes that speeder in the air earlier, Poe calls her their “best fighter” but outside of Jedi duels you don’t get a huge sense of that. This little cut does a lot towards selling that, imo.

Anything that makes this movie more ridiculous is a win in my book.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The kind of person to say “Rey is too powerful for xxx reasons” is not going to be swayed by something like this either way.
Watch Adventure Time
By this movie, it’s more than fine. I can understand some of it in TFA (and TLJ because it was like 2 days later), but by now it’s fine.
Play the Force theme over that beat to make it clear she’s using the Force to hit the tricky shot.

I like the idea, Sherlock. Where did you grab that landscape shot after the explosion from?

Is there any kind of quick shot that could go between the camera whip panning to the left and then whip panning to the right? The frames are similar enough that it’s a slightly jarring moment.
Otherwise, this is a big improvement.

Good point. Could probably trim that second shot a bit so that the pan-right is diminished, but I kind of like the disorienting nature of the cut as it’s a hectic moment for everyone involved.

I didn’t notice the two whip-pans until they were pointed out, FWIW. I think it works as is.

Thanks! I just used a shot from a little later in the film - right after the “ghouls” land, and right before the gang starts climbing the cliff up to Ochi’s ship. I reversed the shot and slowed it a little, so hopefully it’s not too obvious of a duplicated shot; but if it is obvious, I imagine any old desert landscape shot could work in its place.
And then over that, I just added some generic explosion sound effect that I found. Thinking about it more, I’d probably want to blend the “far away” explosion sound with the “close up” explosion sound a little bit better. I’d also love to get some bass into the LFE channel, but I’m not really sure how to do that.
Oh, also, when I was working on your idea of cutting out the extra firing, I kept an extra shot of the stormtrooper zipping about that I think you removed in your version? I wanted to keep it if possible, just to pad out the scene a little bit more. So I ended up reversing that shot too (so that the stormtrooper would maintain a constant movement to the right); and then, because Rey’s shot was now flying towards her, I added in an extra sound effect of a First Order blaster - now the shot originated from the stormtrooper. Because why not do all of that for an extra 10 frames that may-or-may-not work, right?

Cap, are you talking about the cut right before Rey fires, with them struggling to get up? It’s like that in the original film, but I can try to trim it down, maybe? Perhaps something like this? https://streamable.com/tj861b
That said, I like bbghost’s thinking about it creating a deliberate disorienting effect. I could go either way on that.

Not to go completely off-topic here, but does anyone else absolutely hate the Knights’ introduction? “Knights of Ren.” “Ghouls.” Ooooh, I’m so scared. The troopers just sound so bored and uninterested in them, so the Knights don’t come across as threatening at all. Since there are already a few people here with good stormtrooper voices, maybe someone would be willing to re-record the lines? Make the first line “Knights of Ren?” so that it sounds just absolutely terrified and almost awed (I’m thinking of how that one dude sounded when he learned the Emperor was coming to DSII in ROTJ.) and then the second trooper could sound equally awed and shocked with a different line.
“Knights of Ren?”
“Here?”

IIRC people have played around with those troopers’ lines a lot and nothing particularly satisfactory sounding was reached. They sound more detesting of them than bored, to me.

Excellent work as always, Sherlock. That only thing that stands out to me is a jump cut at 0:11.

That looks absolutely perfect now, as far as I’m concerned.

I feel very silly, but I’d always misheard that line and assumed it was a lame attempt at a comedic moment:
“Knights of Ren.”

I thought it was “cool” too (same as family) until seeing it on this thread that it’s Ghouls.
I personally would either have it removed or dubbed something else.
“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”
Same here. It got a chuckle out of me in the theater, thought it was a funny line actually.
“Always in motion is the future” 🌌
Maybe we could dub it for him to actually say “cool”? Because they are pretty stupid if they think they can insult the Supreme Leader’s squad right in front of their (masked) faces.

Agreed. I think it’s better for the stormtroopers to admire them rather than disparage them. I get how some would find the joke lame though. Still an improvement over the original IMO.
Also I recall some other faneditor mishearing it as “Goals!” – It seems this line has confused many people.
“Always in motion is the future” 🌌
I also agree that the stormtroopers should admire or fear the knights of Ren.
Here are a couple of proposals…
The first one has been discussed here before, “Leia told me that she has sensed the BIRTH of her son”, it makes perfect sense!
The second one is something I always wanted to hear from Luke… I wanted Rey to be Luke’s daughter (even from a certain point of view), it meant he had offsprings! and if Disney retcons his story, this new line won’t interfere with it. The meaning of the Rise of Skywalker, and she taking the last name would make more sense.
I hope you guys like them!
Notes:
I DID NOT record these lines, it was Phil Schey (masterluke1986 from YouTube). He kindly asks (if we use his lines), to be added in the credits and his YouTube channel.
I am NOT expert in audio editing. He did 6 takes of every video, I could e-mail the audio tracks to you guys to work your magic.
I LOVE the night to day cycle, and Leia’s purple saber, but I did a fast edit.
Thanks!
That “birth” line sounds great. How well does it mesh with Hamill’s voice over in the same scene, though?
