A Rogue Squadron video game series appreciation / replay thread…

'Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is a series of Star Wars arcade-style action video games jointly developed by LucasArts and Factor 5 and published by LucasArts for the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube consoles (and also for the PC).

The series deals with the Rebel Alliance unit, Rogue Squadron, who under the command of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles use starfighters to engage and defeat the Galactic Empire. The games are set during episodes A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi and recreate the battles that take place during those films, notably the Battle of Hoth, which is in every Rogue Squadron game in one form or another.’ - wikipedia

Weirdly, there doesn’t seem to be a thread on here for the Rogue Squadron games - so I thought it best to remedy that - even if it is a little late 😉 That these games may be of some interest and intrigue during these ‘lockdown and staying-in’ times.

Plus, they’re still a lot of fun to play even some 20 years+ on (though considerably more difficult than I remember!)

Also featured here is the ‘Battle for Naboo’ N64 game, the unreleased ‘Rogue Squadron IV’ game for the Wii, and the cancelled ‘Rogue Squadron X-Wing vs Tie Fighter’ for the XBox 360…

Rogue Squadron

'Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console and the PC on December 7, 1998. It was one of the first Nintendo 64 games to support the console’s Expansion Pak, which allowed higher-quality graphics to be displayed while playing.

The story is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (with the exception of the final level and secret levels) and shows the missions set during the formation of Rogue Squadron.’

Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader

'Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader was released as launch game in 2001 for the Nintendo GameCube. Developed by Factor 5 and published by LucasArts, Rogue Leader expanded on the original game with improved graphics and a new tactics menu that allows the player to form up their squadron or set a target for their squadron such as laser turrets or enemy TIE fighters.

The game also expanded on the unlockable levels of the original–Beggars Canyon is included in the tutorial, the opening level Battle of Yavin was included in both games, and Battle of Hoth was made more authentic with the GameCube’s advanced power.’

Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike…

'Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike was released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube, and was developed by Factor 5 and published by LucasArts. It added to the game the ability for the player to depart their starfighter and join in on a land battle as well as enter into land vehicles such as an Imperial AT-AT and AT-ST during certain missions.

The mission selection screen broke away from the linear format of the two previous titles and featured two intertwined storylines following the adventures of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles.

Rebel Strike was the first in the Rogue Squadron series to include a multiplayer mode. The game featured two-player competitive dogfights, races, and land assaults as well as a co-operative campaign including all but two of the missions from Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader.’

Rogue Squadron Episode I: Battle For Naboo…

'Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo was released on December 18, 2000 for the Nintendo 64 and on March 12, 2001, for PC, and was developed by Factor 5. “Battle for Naboo” is a spiritual successor to the original game in its design, with added land and water combat.

It very loosely follows the plot of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, but focuses on minor film character Gavyn Sykes, a Nabooian security lieutenant, as he fights the Trade Federation.’

What a blast from the past. I still haven’t played the new Squadrons yet. Need to get on that.

Squadrons is great, but be aware. It’s not an arcade action shooter like the Rogue Squadron series. It’s a more complicated space flight simulator like the X-wing and TIE Fighter pc games.

Author
Time

I heard it was difficult, which is why I haven’t played it yet.

Eh, “difficult” is relative. I’ve been playing through the single player story on Veteran and have progressed just fine. But I grew up playing a lot of flight sims (many that were far more complicated and difficult than this). In the world of flight sims, Squadrons is actually rather simplified and pretty easy.

In any case, as it is an actual flight sim and not an arcade shooter, I cannot stress enough how much I highly recommend playing it with an actual joystick. Playing it with a game pad or (God forbid!) a mouse and keyboard significantly hinders the simulator immersion aspect of the game. It’s supposed to make you feel like you’re in the cockpit. And a cockpit has a stick (or yoke, but I digress…).

Rogue Squadron was and is a joy. I’ve always been more of an arcade nerd and was never very good at full flight sims so the original N64 title became a favorite since it was the game that came with my system. I still think it’s the best of the three overall though Rogue Leader was a huge leap forward. Rebel Strike tries to do new things but the implementation didn’t really work. I rented Battle for Naboo once years ago but have never played it 100%.
I had NO idea there was anything about a fifth Factor5 game!!!

The second one was the best if I recall, more polish and better recreations of the classic battles compared to N64. The third, yeah, adds a bunch of weird stuff that doesn’t work. There was a Clone Wars game later had more fun mixture of play styles even if it was lacklustre overall. Never touched any Naboo or Jedi Starfighter games.

Rogue Leader was better in every way but I think the original just had more level variety. All three are astonishing for graphics and performance on their respective consoles.

I did finally get a N64 Battle for Naboo cart so I’ll have to finally give it a go.

I’ve only played the original N64 game, but it’s dang fun.

I’m not really that much of a movie purist. I really should’ve thought my name out a bit more.

I’ve barely played ROGUE SQUADRON on N64 but have had it for PC for the longest time. Currently own it on Steam.
When I used to own a GameCube, of course I owned both Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader and III: Rebel Strike. Emulating with Dolphin is a bit tricky since I never bothered to grab any mods or whichever. Soon, of course.
Never played Battle for Naboo since I didn’t have a N64 or any console that generation. Was gaming on the computer, especially with the X-WING and TIE FIGHTER game series. Never really bothered with N64 emulation, though.
Love this series.
