The Rise Of Skywalker — Official Review and Opinions Thread — Page 34

Nothing! I just went back in the thread and it seems pretty consistent with what I’m saying now? Basically - Abrams ruined his own film because he wouldn’t stop cutting it down.

The argument happening now seems to be that someone stepped in from above and forced him to ruin it, and I don’t agree with that. I understand the inclination to pursue that narrative, but I think there’s no reason to pursue it considering who Abrams is, what his filmography looks like, and the stories that have come out since Rise of Skywalker’s release.

If the film was “mucked with” it was mucked with by the director. He did the mucking on his own. Lemme see if I can find the exact quote from earlier in the thread that sums it up:

edit: here it is! This post - from January
https://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1322580/action/topic#1322580

specifically, this bit: "I really think that’s the big lesson here. It’s not a story about corporate interference, or meddling bosses.

It’s the story of a couple guys, under the gun and on the clock, delivering sub-par work because their instincts are inherently bad. That’s it."

Alright let me rephrase studio interference from meddling to pressure and see if we agree, in the same way that the studio put JJ under pressure in the first place with TFA to produce a script in 9 months after dropping Arndt (paraphrasing), JJ and co. were put under a similar level of pressure after Trevorrow was dropped along with his treatment, it’s a time crunch but also a creative decision. Not so much in the stereotypical way of taking some JJ master cut and unknown corporate hands chopping it to bits, but to your point JJ himself played ball in the mucking. Still it doesn’t take total conjecture to say looking at Disney’s track record you’ll find a fairly consistent hands-on approach. You can feel last minute changes in the movie just by watching it which I don’t find as consistent with JJ despite other films he’s made with arguably poor execution. Someone could possibly do a deep dive and piece together what happened behind the scenes and see where the ratio of blame lands, but probably nothing comprehensive for a few years, everyone involved keeping their cards close to the vest.

The real question is, why not release the deleted scenes? The only other film in the franchise that has no deleted scenes with the BlueRay is Rogue One, and we all the story with that.

For the unenlightened, could you share the story? I didn’t like Rogue One so I haven’t paid much attention, but I’m interested in the production.

Tony Gilroy replaced Gareth Edwards in reshooting more than a third of the film and altering the script, specifically the last act. Most of the deleted scenes wouldn’t have made sense if released since they were part of a different version of the film.

Star Wars movies seem to have a track record of majorly to completely restructuring the entire movie in post-production/reshoots going all the way back to AOTC.

My final thoughts since I probably won’t watch this again… it’s actually good up to the Star Destroyer, in which you get “I’m the spy” and “you’re a Palpatine” and blah blah. After that the finale is so visually messy that I can’t really get into it just as an action scene. For its faults TLJ has very striking sequences at the end. This just made me tired.

I like the colour blue slightly less after watching Rise of Skywalker. I agree, they overdid it.

Honest question: are there any differences between the theatrical version and home video releases of TROS?

Nope, none at all. It was the same with every other Disney Star Wars movie, except for TFA. That movie changed the music in the end credits, but that was the only change.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:

I thought they might try to limit the lightning flashes and photo sensitive issues for home video, but from what i can tell the scene where Kylo goes to visit Palpatine is the same as in theaters.

Watching today for the first time since the theater. I’m halfway through it, and honestly, once you accept the dumb premise and just try to roll with it, it’s just kind of… boring.

Don’t want to waste too many keystrokes on this film so I will summarize my thoughts in one sentence. I can’t believe that we got a Star Wars movie that crossed over into the “so bad it’s good” category, but this film achieved it.

I wouldn’t go that far, I recently watched a Twilight movie out of curiosity and believe me, this movie is a masterpiece compared to that train wreck.

The prequels have grown on me considerably, but I liked all three sequels instantly on their respective opening nights, despite their flaws. I like all of Star Wars, but I’ll put the sequels slightly ahead of the prequels.

I definitely prefer the prequels. The sequels for me add very little to the mythos narratively, visually, and in terms of lore. It looks great, and the acting is miles ahead of the prequels in many cases, but it lacks substance and depth. It reminds me of those fake Western towns, where it’s all facade, but nothing behind it.

Totally agreed. It’s been said before, while execution of the prequels isn’t always great, they have one hell of a story. I think TFA and TLJ are good films in their own right, but I don’t like the story direction. And TROS cemented my position as a legends fan.

I have issues with some of the story choices of both, but I would agree that the prequels have a more cohesive story compared to the sequels. It’s just that the prequel humor and the obvious cgi take me out of the movie sometimes. I’ve found more joy than sorrow in both though.

Is it time for a new thread? Seems to be getting more into comparisons between the whole saga now, less specific to TROS. Think it’s a good time for that since the dust has sort of settled.

I think the sections labeled “Beyond The Original Trilogy” and “Expanded Universe” overlap too much. I think separate sections for Originals, Prequels, Sequels, and TV series would be nice, along with a General Star Wars discussion for topics that cover the entire saga such as the comparisons you mention.

I’m sure preservation and fan edit topics would naturally pop up in those sections, but there would still be a main section for that.

I don’t see much talk about books and video games. I suppose they could fall under the General category.

Don’t get me wrong, this place is great. Just my OCD kicking in.

Plans to split the the current The Expanded Universe & General Star Wars Discussion section into two separate categories are afoot 😉

So the ‘Star Wars’ section of the site would look like this…

• Original Trilogy Discussion
• Beyond the Original Trilogy
• Theatrical Cuts vs. Subsequent Releases
• The Expanded Universe
• General Star Wars Discussions
• Toys & Memorabilia

Books and video games would likely fall under the ‘The Expanded Universe’ section. Something akin to…

‘For talk on the books, comics, gaming, soundtracks & music, documentaries, fan films, homages, cons & events, theme parks & rides, fan clubs & memberships…’

The General Star Wars Discussion would likely be along the lines of…

‘For discussions that cross the ‘Original Trilogy’, ‘Beyond The Original Trilogy’ and ‘The Expanded Universe’ forums; for thoughts and chat that covers the wider GFFA…’

Don’t get me wrong, this place is great. Just my OCD kicking in.

Thanks mate 👍
