Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes — Page 55

Thank you 005. It makes me unaccountably happy every time I read that they forgot to reapply a 2004 or 2011 change, because I somehow imagine the next Despecialized Editions arriving a day earlier for each one.

I sometimes have problems finding the right old thread and in this case I created a new one. But in any case, I noticed another D+ change to TESB.

When Luke is leaving Dagobah the two long shots of Ben’s force ghost have been changed. The 1980-through 2011 version shows Ben head to toe in the same glowing effect. The D+ version has been recomposited to be a bit darker overall and at about the knees, Ben fades to dark. The overall effect is a much better look to those two shots, but it is yet another change.

Like the shot where he puts his hands up? I don’t see any difference from a quick look.

The two long shots. Meaning long distance. They have Ben and Yoda in the background and Luke and the X-wing in the foreground. The rest of the shots are medium shots of Ben and Yoda or closeups of Ben and those appear unchanged. But the two in question have a noticeable fade to Ben’s feet.

I apologize if anyone else has already pointed this out, but in addition to the widely-known fast receding of the Star Wars logo in ANH in '97 and later versions, the appearance of the logo itself was also redone (hastily, it appears) in '97 to look thicker.

I mention this because I just noticed it, and it’s not mentioned in the Star Wars Visual Comparison photo gallery.

Also, the D+ (2019, well technically 2012) version seems to be a tad thicker, but I’m not sure if that’s due to other quality factors. But it still has the same messy strokes as the '97 and '04/'11 versions.

Wow! I found the article first from the discussion on the Hoffman thread and was like wow, someone who speaks our language and eloquently at that! Then I had to stop and scroll back up on my phone to see the author…

Congratulations sir! This is exactly what the doctor ordered and hopefully being on such a well traveled site will get the case to more of the general populace. The smoking gun in terms of what people will take away from it is Abrams himself having to resort to watching OT efforts while making the new films.

It started as just a discussion of the Blu-ray release. One of the forum members is a video engineer who worked on the 2004 master and has talked about how Fox/LFL were trying to meet rush deadlines and made mastering decisions even he didn’t agree with. So he had to defer to George as the final arbiter.

I linked to the Visual comparison site over there so that people who were already confused by the post 97 releases could go down the rabbit hole…

Did I not say in the article that I was going to just go over the major additions? People keep pointing out I didn’t cover this or that. It’s not that I don’t have an opinion on Shaw’s eyebrows or Wicket blinking. I just had to stop going down the rabbit hole somewhere!

Quick question: is there a difference between 2004 and 2011 TESB?

Thanks! They’ll be screening TESB here for the first time since 1997 I believe. I asked about the version (first they said 1997) and finally they got the right answer about the version, it’s “mastered in 2015” (or 2011 unless they are actually showing it without the FOX logo). Gotta go watch it, you never know if it’s the last time to see it in theatres. Only TESB, though, which is weird, but Disney gave it a go. And it’s not like any theatre, it’s the second biggest screen after IMAX in the country. So I guess I’ll survive the rubber mask emperor.

Yeah, it’ll be the 11SE. The differences between 11 and 19 are really only color/clarity, so if the snow looks, you know, white, it might be 19.

No, it’s not 2019, that’s for sure. Otherwise it would’ve been also in 4K, and they confirmed it’s not. Damn, the BD edition is the worst. 😦

Disney still doesn’t acknowledge the difference. I’m still convinced “Maclunkey” was just as much a surprise to them as it was to us.

May I ask where you’re seeing it?

I’m not making a new thread just because of this (if someone wants, maybe make a 4K edition change thread?) but I saw on another forum that they apparantely remade the credits of R1 in 4K and the stars got screwed up:

BD

4K

View them in full and click between them.

doubleofive was recently on the Film Formally podcast talking about just how bad a film Superman III was something called Star Wars…

Episode 17 - Finding Star Wars feat. Drew Stewart’:-

http://sadhillmedia.com/filmformally/2020/5/3/episode-17-finding-star-wars

The blurb:-

'Ever seen the original Star Wars trilogy? Which versions? Multiple new “official” editions of the films have emerged since 1997, with the original films as seen in the 70s and 80s left without any official release. The work of tracking all these changes and preserving the originals has largely fallen to fans, one of whom, Drew Stewart, runs Star Wars Visual Comparisons, a compendium of every visual alteration to the original trilogy. Drew dropped by to talk about how and why all this happened to Star Wars, and how communities rise up when studios fail to protect the legacy of their films.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The history of Star Wars Special Editions, and their changes both big and small.

  • Theories on possible ulterior motives for each new edition’s changes.

  • How fan communities develop and take extraordinary measures to preserve films.

  • The ethics of preservation — who is responsible to preserve which versions of these films?

  • Lots of nerdy stuff. It’s a Star Wars-focused episode of a granular podcast about film technique and theory, you know exactly what you’re getting into.

  • Maclunkey!’

Some great insight, info and discussion on there - and well worth a listen 👍
