I think the compositing is vague enough here to support any interpretation as to where the lasers are coming from.

All three laser blasts come from the exact spot even though the Falcon is moving, and it’s not from the top or the bottom turret.

So I finally figured out how to get the 4K77 version of ANH (I’ve been using the GOUT version for ages), and I’ve never before noticed that this little spot between the cantina entrance and the Dewback has been added in post.

The strangest thing is that in the shot were they enter the cantina there’s no effect added (of course that wouldn’t have been possible in the 70’s anyway as the camera moves), and even thought he angle is a bit different it features be the same few steps and domed building in the background (though the antennae-thing is not present in the first shot). So why was this section added in later at all?

Are you sure it’s not simply that the sun has moved in the time between when the two shots were filmed? Or else there was something in the first shot that needed to be covered up.

And I’ve never noticed the small Bantha(?) to the left of the Dewback before!

It’s hard to see unless you’re looking at it on a bigger screen or zoom in, but the steps and the building are clearly a painted element added in post.

And yes, that furry thing with skinny legs has weirded me out for a while now. I don’t even know if it has an EU name. I don’t think most people notice it as it kinda blends in with the scenery.

It’s explained in the Rinzler “making of” book

“They never got shot a good establishing point of view of the cantina” Ellenshaw explains “The only time they did, Alec Guinness and Mark Hamill were coming down the side, but of course it’s impossible to have their point of view with them in the shot (…) So an assistant editor came rushing over one day, with a piece of negative in his hand and said 'Here, George wants to know if you can paint out those people.”

They used footage from the scene where Obi-Wan and Luke are leaving the cantina (“you’ll have to sell your ship”). They way it was originally filmed, they left the cantina from the rear entrance and emerge walking down the steps next to the Dewback. In the final film they cut out the beginning of the scene to make it look like they left the cantina from the main entrance. Here’s a shot from the original where they are at the bottom of the steps.

It’s a Jerba.

I always remember, as a kid, seeing that promo shot of Carrie sitting on it and always thought it was Parsley the Lion from the kids program “The Herbs” 😉

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

It’s also nice to see something else than just Banthas and Dewbacks on Tatooine. A lot of old EU stuff seemed overly obsessed with those two, though it makes sense that there would be a wide range of imported “beast of burden”.

Also, while rewatching ANH yesterday I noticed a line that I’ve never really thought about before.

When Luke and Threepio catch up with Artoo before the Tuskens attack, Luke says; “Sand people, or worse.”

We take it for granted nowadays that Tatooine’s natives are Tuskens and Jawas (though the latter seems to have been retconned), but this line implies that there might be other creatures as well. I suppose he could be referring to Krayt dragons, but I still feel this showcases one of the weaknesses of how nostalgia can effect the EU. Tusken and Jawas are great and all, but it would have been nice to see other strange creatures as well.

Wow, I did not know the reasoning behind that cantina matte painting. Awesome.

I did know it was a Jerba but I’ve never seen the photos of it with Lucas and Carrie! Those are fantastic, I’ve always wanted to get a clear look at its face! Because…

Bonus small detail:
One of the trophies on Jabba’s wall is a Jerba!

Those shots of Carrie riding the Jerba are fascinating. One of the Mos Eisley streets was filmed as a set in England, right around the time Carrie arrived on set for the first time. So those pictures were likely taken just as she was joining the production.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

A great day for photos I’ve never seen before! 😄

So did the Jerba inspire this critter Wicket is riding on?

Don’t know if it’s appeared in other Ewok stories…

In the Expanded Universe and now in the new canon, those are called Bordoks. They appeared regularly in the Ewoks animated series and have continued to pop up every now and then in comics and even video games. Personally I love that Terryl Whitlatch embraced them and showed what they’d actually look like with a more realistic depiction in her book The Wildlife of Star Wars:

Re-watching ESB today I noticed two things that I’ve never spotted before.

First off, most know by now that they put the IG-88 model in the Cloud City junk room to add some clutter, but for some reason I’ve never before noticed that Zuckuss (or 4-LOM for those of you who grew up with Kenner) is there as well. He’s not even that well hidden, his head is clearly visible on the right side of the frame. Maybe this is old news to some, but I was quire surprised by this, especially since IG-88’s presence was canonized in Legends. I guess they didn’t spot Zuckuss either, since he’s alive and (reasonably) well throughout Shadows of the Empire.

A more subtle detail that I noticed, is that after Luke gets blown out of the window during his duel with Vader, not only did he loose his lightsaber on the way out, but you can actually see it lying on he gantry as he climbs back up.

Lol, now I’m imagining all the bounty hunters, including Bossk and Dengar, hiding in the junk room just out of sight.

Another two small details I never noticed in ROTJ before now.

First off all, and this is very similar to Booman’s first post, but int he first scene where Vader’s shuttle enter the Death Star II’s hangar, you can see a small figure doing some welding. It’s hard to see in the still image I’ve posted, but in the actual clip you can clearly see the light flicker, as well as the other figure walking up to him. It’s funny what we can finally spot when re-watching these films in HD.

Another less subtle detail, though still surprisingly hard to spot, in the “she won’t get a scratch” scene you can see a flag pop into the frame while they’re talking. This one is also a lot easier to spot when you watch he actual clip and see the thing actually enter the frame and stay there until the next shot.

Is there a BTS shot showing how much of the rebel hangar set was actually built?

And I never noticed the Mon Calamari guy in the helmet in that shot before either!

So just earlier today, in doubleofive’s recently resurrected childhood misconceptions thread I posted this:

Chase Adams said:

And finally, here’s a weird one:
I have a specific memory of a scene in ROTJ where Salacious Crumb is chewing on Jabba’s tail and bites a chunk out of it. I know, sounds awful, I have no idea why I remember this, seeing that it never happened but I always thought as a kid that he started eating Jabba!

After SilverWook replied by suggesting it could be because there is a shot of Crumb looking at Jabba’s tail eagerly that my imagination formed a scenario where he actually bites it!
It got me seriously thinking, has anybody noticed the small detail of the scar in Jabba’s tail, could that be another factor that created this false memory?

Edit!

Found this link:
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/67307/how-did-jabba-get-his-tail-injured-in-before-return-of-the-jedi

Taken from the website:

There appears to be two conflicting stories regarding the split in Jabba’s tail.

The first one is listed on IMDb;
Whilst clambering over Jabba the Hutt, one of the high heels that Carrie Fisher was wearing accidentally punctured the latex casing and pierced Mike Edmonds who was operating the tail inside.
Although sounds like an interesting anecdote, the filming sequence is wrong (Jabba’s death scene was filmed last due to the danger of damaging his latex outer casing). On top of that, there’s no attribution for the quote, the injured section would be far higher and most tellingly this factoid isn’t mentioned in any of the countless interviews given by the other Jabba operators.

The second (and more plausible and mundane) explanation is that the scar makeup simply covers a join line.
As you can see from this video, Jabba had two different tails, one which was mechanically articulated and one which was operated using a simple string pulley. The split occurs precisely where you see the scar.

John Coppinger, Animatronics Engineer for Return of the Jedi described it thusly:

“Once Jabba was finished and tested in the workshop we had to plan how to move and install him onto the moving throne base on set. This was quite high up on a rostrum. He also had to be dismantled and moved to the bedchamber set and later to the sail barge set. For both of those we fitted a simpler internal tail volume, made of segments of foam polystyrene that could curl up tighter than the cable version. This simpler tail was flickered and thrashed (when he died) with fishing line strung from poles (i.e. a giant string puppet)”

The strange thing is that Jabba had two seams on his “tail” section, one which was much larger and hidden without having to add a scar. Though the tail had to move a lot more, and they might have found the scar to simply be a quicker and easier solution while also adding some implied backstory to his life as a crime boss (similar to his tattoo).

As for the story of Fisher puncturing the tail and stepping on the tail puppeteer, the guy who actually sat inside the tail, Mike Edmonds, has made it quite clear that he has no memory of her stepping on his head, so it’s most likely just a rumor (supposedly started by Stuart Freeborn btw). It’s talked about in this video: https://vimeo.com/118751672

I’m pretty sure SilverWook was referring to the ROTJ hangar inside Ackbar’s Home One.

So apparently the Rancor wears and earring.

In all fairness though, this is practically impossible to see in the film unless you already know its there as the scene is very dark (at least the 4K83 version, maybe other versions are brighter).

Once Upon A Galaxy mentioned the winners of some contest who got to visit the Hoth hangar set the first day they began filming on it. Luckiest fans in the world!
