Small details that took you FOREVER to notice in the Star Wars films — Page 12

Genuine question: does the FOV of the shot indicate that Yavin IV would be visible from the Death Star? An observer watching from a third point in space (like the camera here) might be able to look on either side of the Yavin gas giant to see both objects, but they might not be able able to see each other nonetheless.

I asked myself the same question when I saw this, but after looking at it a couple times, I’m pretty sure both the Death Star and Yavin IV are positioned such that it’s still a problem. The rotation itself means the camera can’t be too distant (i.e. with a zoom), or the perspective wouldn’t change that much when the camera turned.

I think he meant, why did they add Yavin 4 to the background of the shot?

Well, that was the whole joke.

Oh, my bad. It seemed like you were answering why Lucas changed the shot in general, not just why he added Yavin 4.

This is probably correct, especially considering how objects in space (especially in Star Wars) can be hard to judge w/r/t/ distance.

Looking at the tweet that .gif came from, apparently someone made the case in the responses, too

Eh. I don’t know. For me the most questionable thing in the shot is how the gas giant behind the X-Wings looks like it’s made of play-doh.

But if you really pay attention, you can deduce that the Death Star does, indeed have a clear line-of-sight shot in that… shot. Yes the camera pans around and whatnot, but look specifically at the relation of Yavin, the ships, and the Death Star to one another. Thanks the the way the camera does move, we can see that the ships appear to be traveling in a straight line, that Yavin is directly behind them, and that the Death Star is directly in front of them. Connect the dots and you have a straight line from Death Star to rebel base with no pesky gas giant to block the laserblast…

Here’s a new one on me. I don’t recall ever hearing about this before until very recently. One of the Jawas isn’t wearing their mask and so you can see their actual eyes and mouth:

I believe it’s one of the 12 children they recruited to fill in the ranks. Possibly even Tiffany Kurtz.

If someone can capture a still from the new 4K transfer we can probably get a better look.

(from starwarsscreencaps.com)

But the enlarged part is actually from a few frames later:

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Oh yeah! I remember noticing that when I watched 4K77 for the first time. My guess is that it made more sense to have the background jawas wear black ski masks, as they’d be so far away from the camera. It’s not really the sort of thing you notice unless you’re specifically looking for it. Here’s some screencaps from the 4K scan.

Let’s also not forget this legendary cameo from one of the film crew!

Just discovered this thread and am honestly surprised none of my Aussie friends here have brought this up:

I love how genuinely confused and bewildered Luke sounds when he responds to him, it’s like he’s never seen an australian in his entire life.

Sorry mate, but you’re dead wrong, that guy isn’t even remotely Australian.
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Ted_Burnett

He’s British and has a very strong COCKNEY accent. That scene was shot in Elstree Studios near London, so most of the extras were from there. Why would there be an Australian in an American film shot in England? Most Australian actors rarely make it in the American and British film industry. There are exceptions though. Aussies made there entrance into Star Wars in Episodes 2 and 3, being shot mostly in Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia. As a result of this, most of the extras in those films were Australians most notably in the deleted scenes of ROTS of Padme with the other senators. Lots of those senators were Aussies. One of which I met:

The biggest Australian actor to appear in Star Wars though would probably be the incredible Ben Mendelsohn as Director Krennic in Rogue One.

Aren’t most of the British extras in Star Wars dubbed over, though?

This doesn’t count but I recently found out that General Veers is played by the big bad in The Last Crusade, I don’t know why but I thought that was funny. Hitler was also played by another Imperial admiral, the guy who gets choked by Vader.

A lot of those actors had been playing bad guys in WWII movies before and after Star Wars. Even Sir Alec has been to the dark side.

Snap! I only realised this quite recently. And while looking at the cast list of Game of Thrones, I noticed that Julian Glover also played Grand Maester Pycelle: the old, lecherous adviser with a white beard on the Small Council. I thought those eyes were familiar.

Going back on topic and sticking with Veers: it took me about 35 years to realise the AT-AT commander (with the groovy helmet) was the same character as General Veers…

I just thought this was interesting to think about: In this shot, Liam Neeson had to act as if he somehow quickly hooked his lightsaber onto his belt…when, in reality, he just dropped it onto the ground. 😛

OK, an actual “small detail” I never noticed until a week or two ago (also involving Liam Neeson):

You’ll need to go frame by frame to see it. As he whips his lightsaber out, his robes move in such a way as to indicate that Liam had the entire thing, blade and all, underneath his robes.

I noticed this back on VHS! 😃
I’m sure George woulda’ fixed that, but it was clearly an “artistic decision” or whatever the party line is.

Until recently I’d never noticed that when Luke enters the Falcon cockpit after his rescue and says “It’s Vader”, Lando goes past and touches him on the arm like “You all right buddy?” and Luke nods briefly to confirm it. Now that I’ve seen it I like it very much, I don’t think there are many of these interactions in the movies.

Had a comment but removed it because it wasn’t about the original trilogy.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
