X-Wing or Y-Wing, which ship would you prefer? — Page 2

From having been playing Rogue Squadron the past few days, I'll have to say X-Wing. Y-Wing is just too slow, and the advantage of a stronger hull aren't enough to make it outweigh the advantages of the X-Wing. I just feel more comfortable piloting that baby.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I guess I'd choose an X-Wing, but I always thought the B-Wings looked pretty smooth.

Y-Wing, hands down.

Heavy assault, recon, 2-seater, ion cannons (rearward firing), thick hull. That baby has everything. It's the P-47 of Star Wars. Plus I always loved the sound of the Koensayr R200s from the cockpit. Very soothing.

I do think the Clone Wars-era Y-Wing design looks pretty neat. That and the Venator Cruiser are IMO the most successful PT ship designs meant to look like ancestors of OT ships.

Fantastic necrobump btw 😃

Thanks man 😃 Expect another necro-bump if I can’t find a decent A-Wing, B-Wing or Snowspeeder thread in the last few years - the unavoidable side effect of playing the great old Rogue Squadron games (and one for the 1968 Buick Electra) 😉

I’m seeing Rogue Squadron thrown around, and that was cool, but did any of you play X-Wing?
That’s the good stuff. Really makes you feel like you have joined the Rebellion & are really in the cockpit flying these ships! TIE Fighter was even better in some ways, worse in others. (it get’s all EU with it’s ship design)
Why there’s no modern remake actually boggles my mind.

I agree! My personal favorite was X-wing Alliance. I can absolutely see arguments for X-wing or TIE Fighter being the better game, but the story mode combined with the better (at the time) graphics and capped off with the excellently simulated Battle of Endor (complete with diving through the Death Star II in the Falcon!!) really clinched it as my personal fave. GREAT game series and a true shame we haven’t gotten a modern sequel or remake of some sort!

As for the original topic, it’s a tough choice. The X-wing is obviously the sexier choice. But the Y-wing is almost like a flying tank that’s so ugly it’s beautiful. The wanna-be fighter pilot in me makes me ultimately pick the X-wing but I’d absolutely wouldn’t be above taking a Y-wing for a spin from time to time!

I sometimes favor design over capabilities. I’ve always been a fan of the Y-wing. I think it looks cool and I prefer the central weapons placement over the outlying ones of the X and B wings. It caught my imagination with the original and my thoughts have never changed.

All of this, all the way.
Thing is, X-Wing has to be a PC game. You need to use a controller & the keys to really feel like you’re in the cockpit. So many great key commands. Wouldn’t be the same with just a PS/XB controller.
Can you imagine online with head sets & teams? Oh man. That’s what me n’ my late buddy used to dream of.

Rogue Squadron will drill into you how much the Y-wings are laser blast magnets.
“Remember they move like a sleeping Hutt!”

The Incom t-65 X-wing is the best overall snub fighter in the SW universe. Fast, agile, good shields, good fire capability and far more versatile than the original model the Z-95 Headhunter.
The A Wing is fastest but lacks in shields and firepower.
The Y-wing is a bomber with heavy shields but moves extremely slow and has little agility.
The B-wing is surprisingly good overall despite the design and is somewhere in the middle.

I really want to finally play the original X-wing series but I can never get all the controls down.

The ARC-170 is based on the Y-Wing fighter from the January 1975 second draft, which had a pilot, a top/rear tail-gunner bubble turret, and a bombardier position. At that point there weren’t X-Wings, so the Y-Wings were the primary Rebel starfighter.

Colin Cantwell’s original Y-Wing concept had the bombardier seats on the bottom of the fuselage, but the ARC-170 has it on top, as with the Y-Wing’s real-world inspiration, the World War II Grumman TBF Avenger.

During the assault on the Death Star in the January 1975 second draft, Luke flies a Y-Wing as pilot, Chewie Antilles (forerunner of Wedge) is the tail-gunner, and C-3PO and R2-D2 are the bombardiers.

(The 1974 rough draft describes pre-Ralph-McQuarrie R2-D2 as “a short multi-armed tripod”, basically a miniature version of the Martian tripods from HG Wells’ War of the Worlds. This idea later influenced the designs of BD-1 in Jedi: Fallen Order and ID-10 in Battlefront II.)

The three- or four-person Y-Wings in the January 1975 second draft are descended from four-person Imperial starfighters in the 1974 rough draft, which are stolen by rebellious Wookees and used to attack an Imperial space fortress orbiting Leia’s home planet. The Wookees also paint the craft in bright Chris-Foss-style colors, kind of like Sabine Wren’s stolen TIE fighter on Rebels.

The 1974 rough draft also features lighter “destroyer-class” two-person starfighters. Leia’s homeworld of Aquilae uses a model with a pilot in front and a navigator in a separate rear bubble, somewhat like the snowspeeders on Hoth in ESB; the Empire uses two-man “stardestroyers” that have pilot & gunner sitting side-by-side, like the cloud cars on Bespin. (Fitting since the cloud city was the Imperial capital city in the 1974 rough draft).

Man they really bottled lighting with these designs, didn’t they?
