Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why? — Page 7

I’ve fallen into using “SW '77”. It’s better than the revisionist “A New Hope/Episode IV” malarkey, and it avoids confusion with the broader franchise.

I say both. But i don’t say Star Wars 1977, Just Star Wars. And A New Hope.

haha funny

Man, I remember being 8 years old in 1993, watching Star Wars on VHS. It always confused the hell out of me that the first movie was called Episode IV in the title crawl. Lucas is a madman.

Like…if you wanna do prequels, fine I guess. But do them like the X-Men movies did. First Class is a prequel, but nobody refers to it as the first X-Men film. Episode numbers just make things weird. It infuriates me when I hear about people who are new to star wars starting with Episode 1.

Forgive my laziness for not checking the rest of the thread, but when did it first get marketed as A New Hope? From what I can tell, all the marketing until 1995 referred to it as Star Wars, when the faces set referred to it as A New Hope. Was there a time prior to this in any sort of media (with the exception of the on-screen title) not calling it Star Wars?

It was a slow transition IIRC. The original boxes used big names and little names (giant and small font). Originally, they were either STAR WARS or STAR WARS/A New Hope, Star Wars/THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and Star Wars/RETURN OF THE JEDI. Then around the time of the faces set, they switched to Star Wars/A NEW HOPE, Star Wars/THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and Star Wars/RETURN OF THE JEDI. I don’t think they ever called it A New Hope without also including Star Wars.

It’s hard to say whether this was because they wanted to include the series title on all films (which makes sense), or because they didn’t want to confuse fans who wouldn’t know what “A New Hope” was and were just looking for “Star Wars” (which also makes sense).

And episode numbers. Hell, I stopped paying attention to packaging long before they started putting episode numbers prominently on them. I imagine they’d start doing that to improve the relevance of the prequels.

When watching Empire in the theatre in 1980, audiences were shocked that it jumped to Episode V, leaving kids like me to wonder what might have happened in the three episodes they skipped between Star Wars and Empire.

I was born after 1981 and only knew the crawls with Episode IV subtitle. I remember I asked my father about the first 3 episodes but he had no idea (remember younglings that democratization of Internet only occurred around 1999/2000 for middle class people in France). Circa 1995 the first issue of the french version of Lucasfilm Mag was published, and there I got all the answers: “ok, they are going to make the missing episodes… oh and a new Indiana Jones movie as well !”. There also was the back of the french Laserdisc edition of TESB stating that it was the 5th entry in a Saga of 9, with 6 entries still to be done.

It was nice to be young /:

Now I’m older and the 9 movies exist. Man…

So yesterday, I watched the 2006 Star Wars DVD release. Included was “supposedly” the original version of the film. However,I noticed that the human version of Jabba the Hutt was not included. Now was this scene included in the original release of the film or it was cut which explains why it isn’t there? This has really bugged me. Do you any of you know the answer?

The human Jabba scene was never in any version of the movie. The scene was cut for time, and some of the dialogue was moved to the Greedo scene so Han’s actions would still make sense. When Lucas reinserted the deleted scene in the 1997 version, he used a CGI model of Jabba that didn’t look very good. The scene was updated in the 2004 DVD release, using the CGI Jabba model from The Phantom Menace. The version of the Jabba scene with a human actor has never been released officially, although some people have recreated it using VHS footage.

OK thanks. How could that have recreated the human Jabba scene on VHS if it had never been released?

Did they get access to the original films?

They released bits and pieces of the human Jabba scene on the VHS extras for the 1997 version, to show the work they did to that scene. Some people have recreated the original scene by spicing in the VHS clips with the Blu-ray CGI Jabba version.

The ‘human’ Jabba scene has appeared in various documentaries and featurettes but was never in any version of the film.

OK. That makes more sense. Has someone cleaned up the scene and added into there own version of the original film in HD? Like I know there people out there who do these things.

This is a fantastic example of why erasing history is wrong & damaging.

Not as far as I know either - though Bobson Dugnutt’s ANH Jabba Scene Pre-Special Edition Recreation for the scene is worth keeping an eye on - and has made some impressive progress so far (to my eyes, anyway 😃).

There are other similar projects taking place in the Star Wars Preservation section of the site too.

I have and will always call the film’s by their names with no episode or SW prefix. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Force Awakens, Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. Oh and of course the Tragedies.

If, by “the Tragedies,” you mean the tragic, epic story of a hero whose fear of loss and lust for power drive him sell his soul to save the woman he loves, thus condemning himself to become a servant of the very evil he was prophesied to destroy and to aid that evil in the downfall of democracy itself, then I guess you could call them the Tragedies.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

I say Star Wars when talking to those who know about the theatrical cuts, and I say ANH when educating people about them.

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

I find that it’s a bad idea to talk about any of this out loud.

Its not really necessary to call it Episode IV or a New Hope. But it doesn’t offend me. Its fine for any version from 1981 on, but i call the theatrical cut Star Wars.

Calling Raiders of the Lost ark, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark does. Thankfully they never renamed the movie by changing the in movie title.
