I’m only going include the “Skywalker Saga” films. My list changes every time I marathon the films but this is my ranking as of now. Just for some context I was -1 years old when TPM came out so the Prequels were always a part of Star Wars when I got into it, which is why they are probably ranked too high.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back 10/10
  2. A New Hope 10/10
  3. Revenge of the Sith 9/10
  4. Return of the Jedi 8/10
  5. The Rise of Skywalker 7/10
  6. The Phantom Menace 7/10
  7. The Force Awakens 6/10
  8. The Last Jedi 4/10
  9. Attack of the Clones 3/10
(“Relative to its budget, Attack of the Clones is the worst movie ever put to film.” -Rich Evans)

The Eleven Star Wars Films
by Outbound

  1. A New Hope / Star Wars: I rewatched the OT and ST in preparation for TROS this month, and I found myself enjoying this more than Empire. Although it’s production value isn’t ideal, I find this story best captures the essence of Star Wars… despite being the shortest in the franchise. 10/10.

  2. Empire Strikes Back: Standing next to ANH on a pinnacle, Empire is rightfully praised for its shocking story, high production, and darker themes. 10/10.

  3. The Rise of Skywalker: I’m nicknaming this one Fuck It! A Star Wars Story. This is the only ST movie confident in itself, and it has so much fun doing it. It’s sorta a Fast and Furious movie, but with the emotion of the best Star Wars when it needs it. Only problem is it’s too rushed, a direct result of splitting the trilogy to two directors. 9/10.

  4. The Force Awakens: Rewatching this movie I had forgotten how much fun the the little moments are. Rey and Finn talking in the Falcon, Kylo being immature. And TROS makes it even better in retrospect. Only real issues I have is first, Starkiller Base, and second, the intense nostalgia you’d expect from the passing of the torch. It’s a great setup for the sequel trilogy. 8.5/10

  5. Return of the Jedi: This movie has perhaps the best scene in Star Wars - the throne room. Everything else is meh. The plot is broken up and everyone seems to just be there to finish the trilogy up. 7.5/10

  6. Solo: A very basic movie that was unfortunately filled with controversy. Really it’s a solid movie. It’s a bit clunky, but still a fun adventure I can get behind. 7/10.

  7. Rogue One: Everyone talks about the end to this movie, and I agree it’s awesome. But the first half is too boring, imo. It’s a solid Star Wars adventure, but not one we really needed to make into a movie. But Vader’s in it so I guess it’s great? 6.5/10.

  8. The Last Jedi: This is hard for me because I am in a perpetual love/hate relationship with this movie. I really liked everything related to the Jedi, and got really annoyed by the Resistance. It wants to lecture to the audience when we just want to have fun. I still side with Poe on the Holdo debate, and Rose was an unneeded character when Finn was setup in TFA to love Rey. But after all that, we have Luke’s standoff against the First Order: one of the best scenes in the franchise. 6.5/10.

  9. Revenge of the Sith: For the longest time I put this one higher for the memes alone. But as a movie, it’s basically a bunch of people walk and talk until the main character turns evil. Add some random fights to keep people awake, and you got yourself this movie. 5/10.

  10. The Phantom Menace: The most boring of the Star Wars movies. 4.5/10.

  11. Attack of the Clones: I have never understood this movie. The plot is baffling. The characters cringe worthy. The locations aged CGI. Sorry, but this feels less like it’s one movie and more like the bridge between Episodes I and III. 3/10.

For one last time, Skywalker/Palpatine Saga only:

  1. A New Hope : 10/10
  2. The Empire Strikes Back : 10/10
  3. Clone Wars (micro series) : 9/10
  4. Return of the Jedi : 8/10
  5. Revenge of the Sith : 7/10
  6. The Phantom Menace : 5/10
  7. Attack of the Clones : 4/10
  8. The Last Jedi : 3/10
  9. The Force Awakens : 2/10
  10. The Rise of Skywalker : 0/10

I just cannot fathom how Kennedy, who is a skilled producer and a very intelligent woman, could have produced such non sense. Something went wrong with the ST from its very root, I don’t know how to explain… or maybe I don’t really care now. I feel Adam Driver’s pain: such a good actor in such a mess…

To sum up:

  1. OT
  2. PT
  3. ST : but I just want to forget this trilogy.

So real ranking:

  1. OH : Original Hexalogy

See you all. Have fun. I’ll probably come back from time to back to check out OT hybrid cuts and a ROTS conservative edit.

I can finally put SW behind me 😃

Current feelings. Ranked by favorite-ness, not critical assessment:

Return of the Jedi
A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
The Last Jedi
The Force Awakens
Rogue One
The Phantom Menace
Revenge of the Sith
Solo
The Rise of Skywalker
Attack of the Clones
The Clone Wars (for completion’s sake since I included the newer spinoff movies)

This list reflects how the films rank for me in terms of my feelings toward them, not my assessment of them as films, or necessarily even how much I would enjoy watching them.

My stance on revising fan edits.

That’s being said, with more EU stuff added:

A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
Clone Wars (micro series)
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
The Mandalorians (yeah it gets better actually; still pointless but nicely pointless)
The Phantom Menace
Rogue One (dumb and doesn’t fit the OT but might be the best looking SW since the OT)
Attack of the Clones
The Last Jedi
Solo
The Force Awakens
The Rise of Skywalker
The Clone Wars

If you don’t include the official porn parody and rank it highest of all, you’re off-base and Mala will tell you how off-base you are.

6- Rogue One
7- Solo
8- Return of the Jedi

Just going off all the ones that I’ve seen

  1. ESB
  2. SW
  3. ROTS

  6. TFA
  7. R1
  8. TLJ
  9. TROS
  10. AOTC
  11. Solo
Author

  1. Empire Strikes Back:
No other SW film, in my opinion, nails a sense of true dread and the most organic connection between the cast.
  2. Return of the Jedi:
I know the scorn brewing, and while I don’t like the first half, the last half still stands the best way to end a trilogy.
  3. Star Wars 77:
It’s a good introduction to the ever expanding universe. It tends to be straightforward and a rather simple story. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but knowing how well the following sequel is crafted and how emotionally investing the finale is, the shadow tends to fall here.
  4. The Force Awakens:
It’s no wonder it’s the least offending for most viewers. It treads lightly and borrows heavily from all three of the OT.

…and the rest of the movies more or less fall into relatively the same category of mediocrity or frustratingly dropped the ball when it had the right pieces.

Updated ranking after second TROS watch:

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
  5. Rogue One
  6. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  7. Solo
  8. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
  9. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  10. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
  11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Having seen TROS a third time recently - and I only saw Solo once, 3 days before TROS’ release, so… that’s two movies I’ve had to allow to sink in.

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
  5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  6. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
  7. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  8. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  10. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
  11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Might as well break it down since it’s not your usual ranking:

TROS is such a wild beast. I enjoy it, but… there’s nothing there. It’s so hollow. It’s dumb, fan-fic-y, and that’s fun, but at the same time that’s not really what this should be about. So it’s only above the two films I actually don’t really like at all.

It also hurts to put TLJ ‘last’, so to speak (it’s the last one of the ones I can really have a good time with), but what can I do. The less interesting part of the film is… well… I don’t really like it. And it feels like a different movie. And the more interesting part depends on some key things that just don’t work for me. They almost do, but they don’t. But it’s a bold and beautiful film, and I’ve grown to appreciate it a lot more recently, especially after TROS.

Solo was fun, even if there seemed to have something missing. But I liked it. Not much to be said I think.

AotC reminds me of TLJ in lots of ways. Out of the two stories going on, one is very good and the other not so much (for different reasons). I can excuse AotC’s stupidly cringy moments though, because the story the movie’s telling is just so interesting. TLJ’s story didn’t get me as hooked (mostly TFA’s fault) and so whatever felt off felt much more off than in AotC for example. AotC also makes the galaxy feel like such a huge and mysterious world. What I’m trying to say is that I see some redeeming qualities to this film and I just enjoy it for the most part.

Rogue One is a near perfect SW film to me: its faults are mainly in a couple of underdeveloped characters. Only reason it’s fifth is because RotS is also a near perfect SW film in my book and there’s more emotional investment to that one than to RO. And then, well, the OT’s above it as well because, well, it’s the OT.

Speaking of the OT, I sooo wish I could place RotJ higher. Maybe even first. But its first and second acts are just not on par with Star Wars or TESB. There’s also the sister thing, and the underutilized written-in-in-the-last-couple-of-weeks Han Solo… but, to me, Luke still manages to carry it fairly well. And what the heck it’s still Return of the Jedi, it’s still fucking awesome.

And TESB and SW are perfect.

I have not come to the place where I can rank the movies individually yet. But I can rank the trilogies (internally and externally).

Trilogies
1 - OT
2 - ST
3 - PT

OT
1 - TESB
2 - ANH
3 - ROTJ

PT
1 - TPM
2 - ROTS
3 - AOTC

ST
1 - TLJ
2 - TROS
3 - TFA

I need to watch them all again and see if some rise higher. all I can say for sure is I think TROS, TLJ, TPM, ROTS are better than TFA and AOTC but not as good as ANH or TESB. But what order I can’t say.

Author
Time

Great:

  1. TLJ
  2. ESB

Really (really) good:
3. ROTJ & ANH
5. Rogue One

Good:
6. ROTS
7. Solo & TFA

Alright or worse:
9. TROS
10. TPM
11. AOTC
