SPOILERS FOR FILM CURRENTLY IN THEATER

In terms of Alien Covenant, I figure an ideal cut would just remove the 3rd act Alien throwback stuff on the spaceship near the finale, and better edit the Walter/David fight so the “twist” wasn’t so obvious. Hopefully, there’ll be deleted footage to play with here.

I wish that were possible but the 3rd act is oozing with the Protomorph so there would surely by a myriad of plot holes and inconsistencies made by removing it. Trimming the crap out of it is still an option though.

Also a Prometheus/Covenant fanedit fixating on David would be dope. After Covenant I feel as though he is the core of these two films and that’s why he is by far the most interesting aspect of both films.

I haven’t even seen Covenant yet but this can’t be right.

Ha, I was so focused on the last two I didn’t even notice he ranked Alien 3 above Alien.

  1. Aliens ***** - Perhaps the most perfect sequel.
  2. Alien ***** - #2 gets the edge because it’s faster and more intense, but the first one is more brilliant.
  3. Alien vs Predator ***1/2 - What can I say, I liked it.
  4. Alien 3 ** - I should rewatch it as it’s been a long time since I saw it and I don’t know if I ever actually watched the “Special Edition”.
  5. Alien: Resurrection ** - I highly highly recommend TMBTM’s fanedit “Alien-Ate”.
  6. AvP Requiem ** - So bad I barely remember it.
  7. Prometheus ** - I wish I barely remembered it.

Where may one view this “Alien-Ate?”

The only two movies in this franchise that are watchable are Alien and Aliens. The first is great, the second is really good. Theatrical cuts all the way for both. Cameron’s director’s cut is unwatchable, and Scott’s is unnecessary.

Information on TMBTM’s Alien-Ate Edit can be found at FanEdit - https://ifdb.fanedit.org/alien-ate

and TMBTM also has a great website, here - http://tmbtm-fanedits.blogspot.com

It may be worth PMing / contacting him to see how this Edit can be obtained.

Good luck with it.

I like about half the scenes in Cameron’s Director’s cut. The early scene with Newt and her family is really bad, but the sentry gun stuff is great. I like it when Hicks and Ripley exchange first names, but hate the extended discussion of the Alien social structure in medlab.

I think Alien 3 is watchable, but not enjoyable. Prometheus was half-baked; either be a prequel or don’t be. A lot of compromises in it, and I would guess pressure from the studio to tie it into the main Alien Series. Have not seen Convent or whatever it is called and have no interest in doing so.

It wasn’t until a few months ago when I finally watched Aliens, previously the only thing I knew about the movie is that everyone hails it as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, some even ranking it above the first Alien.

Honestly, I found Aliens to be a pretty generic movie and don’t know what all the buzz around the movie is about.

I know, many of you will accuse me of blasphemy, but the movie simply didn’t do it for me.

Believe it or not, I agree with you. What I love about Alien is the ambiguity. Is the xenomorph sapient or not? Is it driven solely by instinct, or is malice a factor? Alien leaves the nature of the xenomorph open to interpretation, but Aliens? They’re just dumb bugs, except for the queen, whose wants/needs are still driven by base instincts. Took the oomph out of the premise, as far as I’m concerned. And the Space Marines were obnoxious, too.

I’m glad others agree with me about Aliens. When I watched it right after Alien, I really didn’t like it at all, and only saw the technically well-made qualities as a positive. I figure a big problem for me is, as with a few other sequels in big franchises, I don’t think it has any reason to exist. Alien didn’t end with any questions that needed to be answered, and I think that Alien is the kind of picture that no matter how they tried, a sequel would do nothing but make the whole point less special. I feel similarly about Cameron’s own T2, though even that I think did a much better job than Aliens.

I’ve heard a lot that “Aliens proved that more is better in some cases,” but I find that statement incredibly ridiculous, since the fact that there are so many aliens running around and dropping like flies is one of the worst aspects of the whole film.

I pretty much agree everything stated above, even down to the Terminator observation.
I believe the mistake made was the film’s direction after Alien. They kept trying to replicate the story formula for two following sequels. How many times do we have to get Ripley stuck in some situation, having to coordinate how to snuff out the Xenomorphs (usually the same plan), where one by one, each character gets killed, surprise-surprise.
It would had benefitted the franchise to focus on The Company, and what their deal is. I guess the modern spin-offs tried to do this, though to sub-par standards. Or let Alien exist as one contained film.

What is unique about Aliens is that it is a different genre from it’s predecessor. How many movies have had sequels that are in a different film genre? Alien is Halloween in space (a well acted, well crafted slasher film), but Aliens is more of an action movie - yet retaining a lot of the horror elements.

So I am not alone in my opinion of Aliens. That’s great.

If I had done Alien 3 I would have had the xenomorph from the first movie landing in the prison planet after many years adrift in the vacuum of space, focusing entirely on the prisoners and leaving Ripley out of the story. It would have kept with the whole dealing with an unknown life form, as they would have to figure it out, but then again many would accuse me of repeating the formula of the first movie.

How’s the Assembly Cut of Alien 3? Is it better than the theatrical cut?
