Also, there were plenty of witnesses at Jabba’s palace. Assuming this is set after the Battle of Jakku, this is at least a couple years after that.

I think I remember it being said that this is set about five years after Return of the Jedi, so about four years after Jakku. Plenty of time for word to get out.
Working on a lengthy post but left it in the form of a Word doc at the office. Will post tomorrow.
I just say this: I really liked it, even more than I thought I would. Oddly enough, however, not for the reasons I thought I would. I’ll explain.
LOL I hated the first episode. Looks like a cheap Marvel tvseries with random guys playing cosplay at a fan convention. I just can’t stand how they label anything “Star Wars” just because there is a guy wearing a SW helmet 😕 It was lame from minute one to the ridiculous baby Yoda reveal. It’s terrible…
Rebels S3/4, TFA, Rogue One, Solo, and now this… let the past die please 😄
I’ll just watch episode 9 because I have to finish this damned ST, but after that I’m done with Star Wars. It’s no longer Star Wars since 1997 anyway, so it’s time to say good bye.
I mean, say what you want but this looks absolutely nothing like a Marvel tv show.
This show looks better than most Marvel movies.
Grieg Fraser shot the thing. Trying to say it looks cheap doesn’t even make any sense to me.
Tough crowd, as usual. I thought it was great!
The bounty droid’s movements were pretty creative.

Sorry for the misunderstanding: what I refer as “Marvel tv series” are in fact the so called “movies” released in theater since 2008. I’m not mad enough to watch the same formula shrinked into a real tv series. But this mandalorian seems to be, unfortunately…
(and it looks bad…)
But there are legitimately well shot, well photographed, well-lit and well framed Marvel movies. Especially in the last couple years. Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther… those are legitimately good looking movies.
The idea that Greig Fraser shot a poor looking television show just… I don’t get it. I don’t know by what metric you could possibly be judging that by. It looks just as good as his work on Rogue One, and his work on Rogue One looks amazing, period. It doesn’t look good “For a Star Wars movie” but it looked good as in “this is one of the most notable examples of photography for the entire year of 2016”
This is the same guy shooting Dune for Denis Villenueve, btw.

Looking forward to it!
I think it is totally fair to be critical, because we obviously want the show to be as good as it possibly can. But since this is the first ever Star Wars live-action show, I think it would be good to keep an open mind at first, because the filmmakers are trying to find their stride, and we are also are subject to our own biases of what Star Wars is to us. And since this Star Wars as it has never been before, it obviously is going to initially feel a little weird from what you expect.
Try to imagine yourself being the same age you were when you first saw Star Wars. How do you think that version of you would react to this show?
It reminds me of playing with my Star Wars action figures with my cousin, making a stories, characters and adventures. I would loved watching this as kid (definitely more than the Endor movies!) I get the feeling Favreau and Filoni pulled from that same well of imagination that they used when they used to play with their own figures as well. So, when I sit down to watch the show, I try to let myself be a kid again and just have fun with it.

Well, sure, but people saying OMG in SW universe doesn’t fit in at all. The line feels a complete mistake that got through in the script and not done by purpose.

I still regard anything other than films containing the word ‘Episode’ to be part of the ever-Expanding Universe, and have held such material to that standard across the dividing line of the Legends reboot.
As such, Rogue One and Solo have been EU novels in movie form. Same for this new show. It’s not Star Wars at its essence, as plenty of EU material takes a rather different tone or subject matter afield of Luke’s hero’s journey. This show is like a comic put to film, and an older styled one at that. Within that lens I don’t feel it makes sense for me to be very critical of it.
IG-11’s movements are just sooo cool. Props to whoever came up with that.
I’ve watched it twice and will so again for sure. I really liked it. In particular, I like that it’s removed from The Saga. For me, Lucas has contaminated The Saga beyond repair. Hats off to Disney for trying with the sequels, but for me it’s just too much of a mess to fix. The Sequel Trilogy is a course correction to be sure, with some very interesting passages (first 30 minutes of Rey in TFA). However, it doesn’t really move me because it can’t be separated from the mess of The Saga. That’s to set up what I like most about The Mandalorian.
I like that it’s far away from what has come before. It’s familiar, as most anything on Earth is familiar to us regardless of who, when, and where. When real life Earth stories are told, there are a great many things that are similar - e.g. transportation, countries, fashion, environments, conflicts, and history. That doesn’t mean the stories or characters have to be related.
That is something that hasn’t really happened yet in Star Wars. Rogue One and Solo have come close, but even they have either known characters or known Saga events and connections. Lucas had said for decades that he wanted to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, but not connected to The Saga. He never did. Disney has come closer so far, but this is the first true step-away.
Regarding the substance of the show itself; I found it interesting. I’d long thought Fett was his most interesting when he was mysterious. Lucas did away with that almost immediately and along with it my interest in the character, in spite of how cool he looked. This is a fresh start and I’m digging it. We’ll learn more about him as the year goes on and that’s nice too. I’m enjoying the lesser approach. They seem to be putting the world building of this new sector of the universe ahead of spectacle and pacing. I don’t really care for the weight of a story where the fate of all that’s good in the universe is resting on the hero destroying the super weapon\villain\empire. That’s been done already, a few times. I like more intimate and cerebral stories.
The quick pace of the gun fight near the end fit the story, but so did the quieter passages for dialogue when they were most important to the story. Favreau and Co have given the story room to breathe, much the way Lucas and Co gave Star Wars room to breathe in 1977. To me, this felt more akin to the 1977 universe than the more polished views that came after. By that, I mean the presentation of the story, not the in-universe story.
It’s also very much in the style of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. The Mandalorian’s voice is even similar. I thought that was a nice touch also. I don’t need him sounding like Enfys Nest. That affected voice fit Enfys perfectly (no Solo spoiler, so I won’t elaborate), but it would be too much here. We know little about him, but we know he thinks things through before acting. I thought his killing of IG-11 was a great way to show how he did just that. He may be genuinely compassionate, or he may just be pragmatic; there are some important people very interested in this baby and they’re willing to pay tons of money and avoid proper channels to get it. There must be some reason worth exploring. The way he’s looking at it at the end suggests he may be wondering what’s so important about it.
On the rest of the show; I thought the music was a mix. To me, some of it seemed almost too big for the scene at hand. Some of it was fantastic. I dig the main theme, which fits the lone drifter vibe. Some of the other parts seemed a little too much like a Bill Conti type of score. Perfect for Rocky, not so much for two guys riding across the plains. A minor nitpick, but it stood out to me. I really dig the paintings with the end titles. Very cool.
TL;DR; I liked the story, the characters, the setting (off-Saga), and the presentation. I’m buckled in and along for the ride. It’s the Star Wars venture I’ve been waiting on for many years. Which is to say, something without The Force, Jedi, Sith, or light sabers. Looking forward to Friday.

Agreed. I will say “Rogue One” was sensational, but everything else Disney has done in Star Wars has been beyond awful. In fairness, I can’t comment on the animated series, as I’ve not watched them, but everything else I have and it’s bad.
I have long tried to understand why fans like this dreck so much and the only things I can come up with are nostalgia, community identity, and brand loyalty.

This is how I feel when someone claims any of the prequels were good.

Glad to hear it, Anchorhead! I was thinking this seemed like it’d be up your alley.
One of the reasons I liked the show so much was the pacing. Too many of today’s sci-fi efforts (prequel and sequel SW included) are just non-stop or over-the-top action and after a while it becomes numbing. This one had pacing like the original SW, with slow parts that give you time to sink into the story. It also never got ridiculous or silly, like Canto Bight or the worst parts of ROTS. And the action scenes looked realistic and gritty.
Was the staircase (that looked so much like the one in Jabba’s palace) an easter egg?

No way. Indeed I liked Mandalorian and I liked TFA, RO, and Solo, but I didn’t like any of the prequels (especially ROTS), and I didn’t like TLJ. They’re all just movies and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I liked it. The effects are awesome imo without being BLING…as an example when the the Madalorian touches his ship down on the planet his bounty is hiding out. Puddles of water react realistically, gravity and inertia are great etc. The plot is well written and is short enough to not drag out. I’m curious about the hunter’s past after seeing the first episode and what’s going on with that baby…

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order.
