The Mandalorian - Star Wars live action TV series : Non Spolier thread — Page 12

I think at this point Boba Fest has too much baggage, between EU fan expectations and the canon realities of the character. A new Mando allows a completely blank slate (which is what made Boba interesting in the first place).

I think that’s it exactly. As he’d done with so much of the franchise, Lucas milked the character incessantly with backstory of the backstory of the backstory until all mystery and interest had been removed.

The Mandalorian looks like a much needed and wanted reboot of that High Plains Drifter character. I’m signed up and waiting for the first episode.

^ or maybe Dash Rendar ?

Where did Dash Rendar come from again? Fan fiction? Is he part of the canon? And why does he exist? Meaning why is he a rogueish sarcastic smuggler?

I’m starting to wonder if Star Wars was really meant to continue in perpetuity like it is. It seems like the OT was a self contained story filled with archetypes. So they’re just going to keep using this limited number of archetypes? Didn’t the Disney cartoon series have some kind of non-human character playing the role of strong man a la Chewbacca?

I was being a bit sarcastic , meant as a joke , but now that I think about it , the character of Dash Rendar , who made his debut in Shadows of The Empire , is not beyond the possibilty of showing up in the mandalorian . Dave Filoni brought a lot of old “legends” concepts back into “canon” in The Clone Wars , including the Falleen species and Black Sun who also made their debut in Shadows Of The Empire .What I am also saying is that the use of these tropes is not a new thing exclusive to Disney , they have been there for a long long time . Dash was indeed portrayed as a sarcastic rogue smuggler . There was even a character named Rik Duel in the original Marvel Star Wars comic that was basically Han with a goatee who was also a sarcastic smuggler. There are lots of other decades old examples if you look closely .

That cuts to the heart of the issue for me.

Let me be clear that I’m not trying to derail this thread or bash the series as I think it looks like the most promising thing I’ve seen from the Lucasfilm franchise in 30years.

I just am beginning to wonder if Star Wars is really just a self contained 3 film expression of the hero myth with some very well defined and classic character archetypes. If all Disney or anyone else for that matter can come up with is a rehash of the same archetypes I have genuine curiosity as to whether this franchise is being stretched far beyond what it was intended.

Well…enough of my off topic musings. This series looks great.

Between Netflix, Amazon, and HBO ive got enough susbscriptions so I’ll probably wait til the first season is done and subscribe for a month and binge watch it. Assuming that is an option.

I think those thoughts are totally warranted, and I think we’ll have better idea on that as we start getting more non-Skywalker content and see how much it can be different from what came before it.

Is there going to be a spoiler thread for this series when it airs in November?

Many Europeans and others around the world without Disney+ may be spoiled otherwise?

(I think they are able to subscribe to Disney+ sometime in ‘early 2020’?)

Tighten Up and then turn it all the way up to 11!

I just made a Mandalorian spoiler thread, so once the show premieres maybe we could just use this thread to discuss general news about the show?

Suppose this show on DisneyLife in the UK is wishful thinking?

If Disney+ is going to be launching in your country, I’d say it’s a near-100% guarantee it will not appear on any platform other than Disney+.

According to Twitter there is a trailer dropping tonight (10/28/19).

Here’s the new trailer!

Definitely looks more like Rogue One in terms of cinematography, which is the best looking SW film IMO. It’s like a hyper-realistic OT, kinda like how it was for me watching the OT when I was a toddler.

Still nothing much to go off of story wise, but definitely seems more grounded and original than TROS.

Seems like we’ll be getting some Clone Wars flashbacks in the series. Could of course be that someone, e.g. the Imperial Remnant, has dug up some battle droids and droid gunships, but since the trailer narration seemed to focus on the Mandalorians as a people, and since this is partially a Dave Filoni show it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the show will focus on the fate of the Mandalorians after their uprising in Rebels. Retelling the story of the Mandalorians for those who haven’t seen Clone Wars and Rebels shouldn’t be too hard if they include some flashbacks every now and then. I am however curious about how they will address the fact that Maul ruled Mandalore briefly, though it wouldn’t surprise me if they just ignored that for now. I was thinking maybe this could tie in with the rumoured Solo series, but that seems like it would only complicate things, especially for their very first live action series. I definitely think we’ll at least have some of the Mandalorian characters from Rebels be directly mentioned at some point.

Anyone else thing the Mandalorian guy sounds like a PT clone?
(I haven’t seen the PT since 2005ish, so I could be wrong, but it stood out to me)

Could just be that the voice modulation sound similar. They’ve probably just used the same effect that they’ve used for the last few films, which for all I know could be the exact same method used in the PT as well.

A lot of the voice altering sound effects in the new films has had a bit of a PT feel to it, which makes sense as the OT obviously didn’t do the effects digitally and I’d imagine recreating those old analog effects would be difficult.

Didn’t they do things like the OT trooper voices by simply recording them over walkie-talkies? Even CB radios are still around in this crazy digital era we live in.

That makes sense, though I’ve never actually looked it up.

Though even if that’s how they did it for the PT and ST they’d still record it digitally and that might also make it sound different. Sound editing/effects is the part of filmmaking that I know the least about.

An interesting details that was mentioned by Star Wars Explained was that the Mandalorian’s armor changes throughout the trailers, implying that he makes good use to the Beskar (“Mandalorian iron”) throughout the first season. The second trailer also emphasizes just how useful the beskar is against blasterfire.

The armor shown in the image below must be from late in the season as all of his reddish armor-plates has been entirely replaced with shiny beskar.
