Is there any concrete statement from someone that would know that there is a re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release slated for next year?

Not that I am aware of. It’s really all speculation at the moment as always.

The Last Jedi and Solo are already available on UHD. I see the previous Marvel movies are being released on UHD. The Force Awakens and Rogue One can’t be far behind. I’d expect the Original Trilogy special editions to arrive on UHD eventually. I see nothing to cause expectations for the unaltered versions.

I’m fine with the versions of Rogue One and Solo we have. No need to muddy the waters with special editions of those movies as well.

I’d love to get The Force Awakens and Rogue One on UHD, but I will not by the special editions of The Original Trilogy again, ever. I think the prequels (AotC and RotS) would have to be upscaled from 1080p for release on UHD so also not interested.

The only reason I’d sit through the special editions again would be if they released them in 3D theatrically. I’d watch them just to see the trench run, walkers on Hoth, and speeder bikes all in 3D.

You don’t want to see any of the alternate footage shot that was scrapped? There’s practically two alternrate versions of these films.
With five versions of Blade Runner in existence I don’t see how alternate cuts of R1 and Solo is going to muddy anything.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a few deleted scenes, but I don’t need them edited into an alternate version.

When I see a Star Wars disc release anything like the Final Cut release of Blade Runner, I’ll be less hesitant of alternate versions from a company that hasn’t released a proper theatrical version of their film since the VHS/laserdisc days.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, the new releases are just repackages of the existing releases, albeit with new disc and cover art. Some day.

Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t officially announced any new sets for next year, but this repackaging of on-hand stock has almost every time meant a new Disney release is imminent, and that lines up with the (fairly credible) rumors of a “Skywalker Saga” 4K set not just in the works, but ready to go for 2020

The most recent example of this practice was Marvel repackaging all their MCU movies to clear out old stock in advance of the Infinity Saga box set still undated for next year.

I wonder if TFA is the original release or the one from the 3D combo that has the Abrams commentary.

That’s actually a good question. Anyone have photos of the backs of the covers?

I feel like it would make way more sense for it to be the latter, since using the old disc would make TFA the only commentary-less saga film of this reissue. TLJ had Rian’s commentary from the get-go.

I’m guessing RO and Solo never got commentary tracks?

It does NOT have the Abrams commentary mate - according to the NathanPButler video linked on these releases above. He talked about that particular subject in depth on it.

The NathanPButler video above has him holding up the back covers (and spines etc) to the screen for a decent look at them mate.

Interesting. Guess they’re just trying to clear as much old stock as possible, and might still be trying to push the 3D set by keeping that disc exclusive to it.

Author

I don’t think they’re pushing the 3D set (3D was basically dead when they released that disc) they’re just trying to do the least to move the dead stock as attractively as they can. If these discs seem lacking, that’s fine - the contrast will be even more pronounced when they’re stacked against the upcoming 4K set.

The thumbnails for the digital copies all have this artwork now. The only difference being Anakin’s saber is blue instead of red (as it should be) on Attack of the Clones.

weird thing I just noticed - the titles between the Star Wars sandwich-style logo aren’t stretched to fit. The Last Jedi and A New Hope are the primary examples. It’s almost like they just typed the words into a “Star Wars logo creator” and printed it onto the image.

Me reading something into nothing:

So digital thumbnails are now these, but the teaser images of Disney+ show the theatrical poster for Star Wars ‘77… hm… hm…?

That was just a placeholder image. People in the Netherlands have a free preview version of Disney Plus, and the thumbnail images are identical to the new Blu-ray covers.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX

Unless the theatricals are coming too, at a later date…

Excuse me if this might be obvious, but would the new releases on DVD have the 2011 version changes (Darth Vader NOOO, Rocks in front of R2D2) or are these just identical to the older DVD versions?

Author

Good question. I assume they’re just the 2001-04 DVD releases, unless they pressed DVD copies of the BR masters in the past, since these seem to just be “clear out old stock” releases.

Author

IIRC, the 2013 reissues of the 2011 OT and PT bd packs included dvd copies of the 2011 versions, so it should be the 2011 versions across all formats now.

How did they decide which lightsaber blades would extend beyond the borders, and which would be cut off? They’re not even consistent within posters, see AOTC!
